how I learned marketing at a ball game

here is a little marketing and sales lesson I learned at a baseball game last night.

I get a phone call from my brother saying he had 21 free tickets to a local minor league baseball game last night.

when we got there apparently so did a bunch of other people. I guess it was fan appreciation night so they were giving away stacks of tickets at the library and some other stores in town.

So we were standing outside the baseball park waiting for the group of people we were meeting there.

and there was a bunch of people trying to give away their free tickets to the people standing in line waiting to pay.

People were having the hardest time trying to give them away. Most of them weren't able to give away their free tickets.

we also had about 8 tickets to give away. but the only difference between us and the other people we gave all of our tickets away in about 3 minutes.

while other people couldn't even give one away.

so I took this as a lesson, since as internet marketers we are always trying to give something away free.

certain people were approaching others trying to give them away but it seemed like they were trying to sell them.

people are conditioned to think that something free entails some sort of catch. but how were we able to give away all of our tickets, more and faster than anyone else.

well heres is how we did it. We used the friend helping a friend approach, which is the same reason I get upto 40% optin rates on most of my landing pages.

instead of going through the line going "who wants these" anyone want tickets?

which obviously wasn't working.

we just went through the line said hi and struck up a mini conversation with the people and explained how we got the tickets and why we were giving them away.

so the first person we talked to took 2 tickets, the 4 people behind us took 4 tickets, and the 2 people next to us who also heard us talking took the other tickets.

so we asked one person and gave away 8 tickets while other people asked round 20 people and couldnt give away 2 tickets.

so the one lesson you could really take from this is that people are naturally skeptical when they hear free, so they need to hear why you are giving them something free to justify it in there own mind.

so in your landing pages let them know what their getting and why, I bet your opt in rates increase.

just a simple reason "why" your doing something can increase your conversion rates completely.

we clearly let them know what we had.

what
8 free lawn seats

why
we got a bunch of them at the library

how
take'em and walk right in

benefit
skip the line and go in a get a good seat

which is very good in the im industry the more stuff you can give away the more money you will make.
