Is content still the No.1 factor for new websites?

Hi guys,

Recently I rent a new VPS to start a new wordpress websites mainly teach foreigners the tips and guides to shopping on Taobao, it's updated for 3 weeks, 2~4 posts per day with 500~1300 words per article that 100% original, all the content are the frequently asked or things encountered the most in Taobao shopping.

However, after 3 weeks update I found there's nearly no rank on Google, everyday I can only get 6~10 clicks from Google and the keyword rank is very low. So I tried to lower the posts upate into 2 per day so that I have some time to post some links to my sites, is it the right way?

Currently I am a little confused, usually how long I can get traffic from google if I continually to post original articles on my websites? Does content still the No.1 factor for new websites? What should I do to get more traffic to my website? Thanks for any constructive advices.

Yes, Content is still plays an important role. Google loves fresh and unique contents. However there are other things you should have to consider in order to get rank in Search Engine result page. Like doing onpage and off page seo. Creating quality backlinks etc.

IMO content still plays a huge role. Have you optimized your site for Seo?
Either way it's far too early to give up. Keep at it, you need more time.

    A) Yes content is fundamentally important. And, in my opinion, it's still the number one factor. But since Panda, Google puts a lot more emphasis on quality than quantity.

    B) Have you done research to find the keywords that people use when they are interested in Taobao?

    C) Another key factor are the backlinks.

I scanned your website quickly. I like it. It's clean and simple. But may I make a few suggestions?

    1) I would get rid of the slider up. The sliders reduce the conversion rate. People are distracted while we want them to read.

    2) I would make the logo bigger.

    3) I would add a little slogan that explains the mission of the site and attract visitors.

    4) I would talk a little about yourself. A small Johnson box on each page: "Who am I?" The goal is to create a personal bond of trust between your visitors and you.

    5) Your website is too slow. Use Google Develpers Speed Insight

or http://yslow.org/ to see what is wrong. Add https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/ to help solve the problem.

    6) Your social sharing buttons overlap content (on my computer) and it's irritating.

    7) I do not see a "call to action" button? They should be on every page!

    8) You don't build a list? I don't see a squeeze page!

    9) Maybe be a little more active on social media?

Yes it takes time before we get a good rank in Google. We must not lose patience.

I know nothing about Taobao and Alibaba. I do not understand the difference between the two. Are private individuals (not companies) can buy on Alibaba? Or it is only the businesses that can buy on Alibaba?

    I've read this page:
Taobao shopping tutorials: 6 steps to shopping on Taobao-TaobaoGuides Very interesting. But I'm not sure if we can enter our information in English or whether we should translate it into Chinese?

And how do you monetize your site? With an affiliate program like Amazon ?

    Good luck!

Thanks Seven for your valuable advices. I've did my research on the keywords before start this website and I try my best to make the tutorials articles fluent and valuable to the readers.

I will follow your advice to improve the website frameworks, but it is a wordpress website, it is a little hard for me to customize myself. As for the speed, I rent Ali Cloud in the west USA, maybe I will need to change into Linode or other host service.

Also I will add a call to action button at the right slider bar. As for the monetization I intend to lead the traffic to Taobao agent store so I didn't make the squeeze page.

Taobao is a consumer 2 consumer website while alibaba is a business to business website, but individual can buy things from both websites. So TaobaoGuides is mainly to help them shopping on Taobao and Alibaba.

I know I should be more patient on built backlinks for my websites meanwhile post useful tutorials on the website, however, I searched lots of keywords and found that I have seldomly ways to build backlinks myself. Maybe I should outsource the backlinks and concerntrate on the quality posts.

Yes, the content plays a big role for each and every website to get the ranking. You have to update your website regularly with unique contents which are based on your niche. Optimize your site to the search engine friendly then you have to get the good move up. Do the other factors such as link building methods to build your website. Social signals one of the best platforms to get the organic traffic to your website, so try to get more social shares of your contents.

Content was never #1 for ranking pages.

Content is king is a stupid phrase because nobody seems to know what it means. What is content king of?

Not of SEO. Not of getting your pages ranked.

You need onpage optimization and backlinks to rank. If you have lousy content but your onpage optimization is good you're better off, from the point of view of ranking, than if you had amazing content with poor SEO. If you have backlinks and onpage is good, you'll outrank a lot of pages that have great content.

Content (and that does not mean articles only) is good for when someone lands on your pages. Backlinks is what gets you that someone to land on your pages.

I both agree and disagree with this. Lousy content is better off fully optimised - but expect a high bounce rate and nobody sticking around to see it. Not to mention, what content marketers class as, 'amazing content' is usually at least half optimised already - every piece of written content that counts as 'amazing' includes use of keywords, related words, a decent title/subheadings etc...

SEO and linking is all well and good, but as many industry leaders such as Rand from Moz have stated over and over again - without the quality of your content being there, you're really just 'tricking google' to rank. You're also ultimately tricking searchers who are looking for quality information not garbage. So although you may rank, it basically goes against what Google is trying to provide for its searchers. Some people think SEO is keyword stuffing, and you will eventually get hit for your garbage. Yikes.

Its best to build links naturally within high quality content.

I never said there is no need for quality content. I just said it's not relevant to ranking.

And, there is no No. 1 factor for a new website. There are several factors that you have to get right, all of them, to have a great site.

Technically this to me is sound advice. Not sure why it got hammered so much.

In my experience, and purely from an SEO point of view, the best content in the world just sits there looking pretty until onpage and offpage factors are worked on.

As an aside, I know everyone harps on about getting fresh content to the site etc, but I've found a more effective way is to spend some money on AdWords traffic, then jump into your Search Query report to find out which keywords are actually your high conversion moneymakers, build out specific pages related to those specific keywords (yes, great content for conversion purposes), and then start working on onpage and offpage SEO.

Why create a million random pages if you don't need to?

    Quality content is just one.
If you think have quality content done by
the best writer will do the magic then you
    have to have a rethink.

Aside good content, you need to place
your website in front of other
webmasters alike and also potential visitors.

Some of these things you already know them.

How about don't do any of that and do some SEO. First thing: you have your blog as your home page. It's hard to rank a page that's constatly changing. So make your homepage a static page.

Also, what is your site about? I land on your homepage and I can't instantly see what the site is about. That's really bad for conversions.

On page wise - I couldnt agree more! you need your content to be super epic and engaging. Your content represents you!

As for Off Page, the problem here is if you can't identify what works then your just creating tasks for the sake of creating tasks. Why kill a fly with a bazooka if a folded up newspaper is all you need.

Look, if I know that 80% of my traffic is coming from one particular source then Im going to scale there. Im not going to give the same amount of time and energy to a source or procedure that only yields 5% traffic.

If you want to rank high on Google and generate traffic you need to publish content on your site. You also need to optimize your onpage SEO for the keywords you're targeting. And of course you need to generate tons of backlinks since backlinks are still the #1 ranking factor according to Google.

Surely the wheels, for without them how are you going to tell if you're on time for your date?

I so love these number 1 questions about things that have many necessary parts, don't you?

By the way, I once met a car engine that told me the real real secret about cars: neither wheels nor engines matter, only the color of the hood. Get that right and you'll be zooming through the streets of your city like you were the Prince of Persia.

That was a direct quote, from the horse's mouth. If you don't like it, speak to the horse's mouth!

I am quite calm. I've been quite calm since 1965. I have, though, just made my opinion loud and clear.

But, apparently, not enough. So here it is again, the question is flawed. It has the word 'still' in it. There are things where there is a number 1 factor (or some factors are #1). New websites don't have such a thing, unless it is loadability.(Create awesome content for your site, then fail to create a site that loads, then tell me content is the number 1 factor.)

Assuming you pass the loadability test, what good is your content going to do it if no one sees it? (And the other way around, what good does it do that people find your content if your content is worth less than my toe nail clippings put together?)

Content of a website is one of the main factors that decide the ranking in search engine results. The quality of the content is very essential after the release of new updates on search engines. SEO experts have tried to deceive the search algorithms to rank high in search results. Search engines are continuously updating their algorithms to rank high quality content in search results.
Quantity and quality of content are important along with SEO optimization. It is advisable to post updated fresh content on your website. Content must be engaging to the users. Time spent by the user on a page of a website gives the idea about the relevance of the content. Search engines often take clues from the time spent by the readers on the page.
Link building is important to get high ranks in search results. There are good and bad quality back links that we need to observe. Always try to get the high quality back links. Low quality back links can deteriorate our rankings in the search result. Try to avoid the back links that are bought by owner of the website to increase the rank. Links provided by back link farms eventually decrease your rank. Reason behind this fall down in rank is that the link farms are providing same type of back links to many other websites also. Sooner or later the search algorithms are going to discover this hunch and they will impose a penalty on your website rankings.

Content is very important for any website because it attracts user, if your content is unique, informative then it would increase the user engagement. Write articles on your product and services by targeting relevant keywords which will drive relevant visitors to your website and ultimately increase the productivity.

As many people seem to be agreeing on, content is still king. However, Google seem to have become increasingly better at distinguishing between good and bad content. Which of course means that you have to create great content every time you decide to post anything.

Backlinking is still very important, as they help your google-ranking. But remember that it's better to have a few links on good sites, rather than many on crappy sites (at least long term)

One way of getting your links on these sites is by creating content that they in turn would like to publish. So create your content with care, and choose your backlinking-sites with care.

Got it, I will continually release useful contents in the posts in my websites, my problems are the links to rank the keywords, for one thing, it's a brand new domain with only 1 month old, for another thing I can't find relevant links like blogs, forums and other websites via the niche. Only things I can do is to share links to some social networks. But that's not enough to rank the keyword, any suggestions?

What does the term "content" even mean?

sounds like an artificial combination of words for the sole purpose of filling empty pages

Either you have something important to say, or shut up and work in a bank

Content still plays a great role because if you offer good quality content then the readers are going to come back to you for more quality products next time they need anything related to your niche. They are going to remember you. But since there are more techniques in the market then before so you need to do on page off page SEO too. It is going to help you as it is the best combination to get profit that is Quality+traffic=profit.
If your content is not good then you wont be considered credible by the audience and they wont come back to you.

High quality content is the key!

What I mean here by high quality content is this type of content that we all love:

1- Content that provides a piece of information.
2- Content that solves a problem.
    3- Content that teaches something.

If you write great content, you'll have visitors stalking and trying to read all of your posts.

Google looks at this and sees that people are actually Interested in what you have to say and they give you a boost.

    Even if they don't,

You should be able to grow your business on "Word-Of-Mouth" traffic too.

I always advice new web owners to start with long tail low competitive keywords as they are easy to rank. When a site is new it has low DA and trust so it is difficult to rank for medium or competitive keywords.
So my 1st advice is use long tail keywords.

Now I come to the second point the content. Your content must be unique and has something new, so people come to it and share it to get you traffic and backlinks
Updating the content regularly for a new website does not mean that you get traffic. To get traffic you have to rank your easy keywords in Google so you start getting traffic to your site.

To rank higher you need backlinks. Read the following article to get backlinks fast for a new website, so you rank quickly.

    http://www.limitlessreferrals.info/2016/12/how-to-get-backlinks-fast/

Along with backlinks the factors which help you improving your rank are the social signals. Before building backlinks I advice you to build some social appearance.

    Hope it helps !!!

    In my opinion,

Content is still the number one thing.

Plus, it really has not been that long, so, I would continue to do what you have been doing.

With that said, if you can, get out there on social media--the big ones, facebook, twitter, etc.

    And interact with your niche.

Also, if you can find a forum--start posting on that, and work up to having a link in your sig, that will help drive some traffic back to your site.

No, Google doesn't want fresh content all the time. I have not published in over 1 year, I have not lost my positions, on the contrary, I'm up for some more keywords.

Yeah, I did get some more backlinks.

But how do those searchers find your great content?

And what is the definition of great content?

I never search for great content.when I want to buy a blue widget, I want to find a site that sells blue widgets like the one I am looking for that I can trust to deliver at a price I like.

If u have great content on your blue widget site but I do not find your site, you lose.

Same if I do not like your price.

Same if I don't trust you.

          So, which one is #1?

Content, great content, is not #1 from a purely SEO point of view.

The question is lousy! It is like saying, is your left foot still #1 for jogging?

About content.. I would definitely say (in my experience) that content is still #1. #2 would be keeping your users as happy as you possibly can, whch may even lead to some natural backlinks.. bonus! Plus, Google likes this. But backlinks I would place at #3, and remember, when acquiring backlinks for ranking, a few links from relevant authoritative websites, is better than tons of links from relevant, but less authoritative websites. And, as you may know, ALWAYS stay away from irrelevant websites, period, or you may get penalized by Google. Trust me, I have experienced this penalty first hand years ago. And just stay away from blackhat SEO, otherwise, if you are trying to build a great website, you will fail.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards,
    Shawn

I am curious about my learned friends and their suggestion that content is #1

Sure that is what google says, and its a nice idea, but riddle me this. I produce original content in my niche regularly. I have seo on page concepts handled and it all seems like a good idea.

But my seo guys say not to bother too much, unless they are going to target a page i made with their links from somewhere else etc.

ALSO I notice that the vast majority of the leaders (by rank) on core keywords in my niche have no new content. I sell a product and this is the e-commerce product space but sure if content was actually important the top 3 ranked sites might pay someone to put something on their corporate sites?

I dont think they put a lot of new products on, and do products with a few sentences count the same as 400 words of original content, niche related with dot points and images with correct anchor text?

I would love to believe what I am doing is important (and yes I distrubute the articles via links on social media , but it seems its all about the value of their adwords packages, and the seo links they have coming in.

Perhaps if we had exactly the same seo, my content would be important, but I still see google getting its signals from a lot of other places rather than fresh content being an over-riding factor.

Is it the same in your competitive niche ??

A couple of things you need to know about getting traffic. First, organic traffic takes time to build as site longevity and content building activities are things that search engines like Google measure. Keeping content fresh and growing on your site will help you but it is a slow process to move up in their rankings. Also, times are changing and in 2017 for example, Google has announced four new items they will be measuring and ranking sites on - don't hit these targets and they will not display your site content organically at all.

These are "Must do" things you will have to do to rank your webpages well at all. If the topic interests you, you might want to watch a video I recently published on YouTube that documents 4 new things Google is doing as of the first of this year that is changing the SEO ballgame one more time...I title it "Google Search Engine - Organic SEO Impacting Updates for 2017". Watch this video and others in this playlist I have been building of good SEO tips on my YouTube site.

Hope this information helps you out a bit.

    Best wishes,

Content is still very important, but not all content is the same. It really depends on how valuable your content is to your audience. Think about yourself, which sites do you frequent and why? What makes you come back? Is it because they have new, fresh words printed on the screen or because their some sort of value your getting out of those words?

Most marketers try to get buy with 300 - 500 word articles. Some are now saying more original content is better for an authority site. Try a few 1000 - 2000 word, keyword rich, original articles.
