I Think I got stiffed

Let me begin with, yes I am miffed and yes it is over a pitance of a payment. But to me it is the principle.

I was, along with half the world, to promote a free eBook for another marketer. The promise was $1.00 to me for everyone who opted into this marketers list for the free eBook.

I complied and promoted the book to my list. I gave a whopping 13 opt ins (free doesn't have the draw it used to).

So it comes time for payout, goes past time for payout..I send a query. The response I received is, "All payments have been made, is it possible you did not meet the $20.00 minimum"

First, no $20.00 minimum was ever stipulated before this. Second, WHAT all who promote building a list say each name is worth $1.00 a month...over a year this marketer is going to quibble over a $13.00 investment?

So warriors is this an ethical practice?

I know I have said other times, Sh.tuff happens use it for fertilizer, and I will again. But, this just seems to be wrong on so many levels and I had to vent.

Did the guy approach you or did you ask him?

I'm guessing you got one of those JV letters... I usually toss them...

Are you 100% certain there was no 'fine print' somewhere that stipulated the $20 minimum? If so, why not shoot another email to your list and get the extra 7 you need. Otherwise you're out the $13. Hey, that's a couple trips to McDonald's.

Well, I was certain. And I cannot promote any longer the promotion has ended.

Really the $13.00 isn't in and of itself the issue. This person essentially entered an ad-swap. They offered $$ for leads. We all know how valuable leads are, and that value is recurring. So to say that a $13.00 payout is too much of a pain or wont be done because it costs to make it or whatever the excuse is in my book just lame.

Of course now I am branding myself negatively...maybe I should just cancell this thread.

  • Happens all the time. Clickbank starts taking back commissions after 90 days. This is how big companies take advantage of the naive.

Not much you can do about it. Move on and lesson learned. If you are looking for the
Ethics Police to step in and make things "right" it is not going to happen.

You have to know what you are getting yourself into BEFORE you make a commitment.

I could have bought a house with the money I've been screwed out of over the past 10 years and that's not a joke!

And that is why I don't have minimums. I remember the frustration years ago when my list was small and I barely scraped by the minimums.
That's why if you make one sale, you get paid. I think it's encouragement to keep going.

Oh.. except for the products on Clickbank.. obviously no control there.

InternetMarketingIQ is right, not a thing that can be done about this incident.

BUT dang it, maybe the thread will get others to think along the lines of Devon Brown and be top notch.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the OP was looking for a solution to the dilemma, they even admitted the amount of money was hardly worth the effort.

I think it's sad that so many people take the "it happens all the time, oh well" attitude. I would hope that more people in the Internet Marketing community would take more pride in their industry than to just accept that deceitful or misleading practices are commonplace and generally accepted.

I call BS. Even if all you do is help people become aware of the tactics and who is using them, at least people will have more information to help them make decisions about who to do business with and who not to do business with.

In my house if you walk past the garbage without taking it out to the trash, you'll be in the doghouse. You don't just walk past a mess without cleaning it up. Even if you didn't make the mess.

That's a shame, OP. If I have any minimum payout thresholds I provide prominent notification so that anyone who doesn't want to participate due to such a condition can choose not to.

Tell him you want your 13 leads unsubscribed by him with a message saying

"As I did not did not give full legal disclosure of the conditions of my promotion I regret that I have to cancel your subscription."

Then, if your list are in the IM field, tell them what happened and tell them you won't be doing business with this person again.

Or fantasize about doing this for a few minutes, then move on.

Awww Martin I fatasized about more than just writing an "I don't like you note..." but my sensibility, civility, and just plain have too many things for confession this week already stears me from doing any of that...hahaha

Hey all thanks for your comments. I have the reassurance that my mentors and peers in the IM industry generally do not like this, and that is good.

Now I am off to enjoy a good cigar and fix the problems of the world with my smoking buddies...
