Selling on ClickBank® Or On SSL Website... ?!

Hey All,

I would like to know what's the best and easiest way to sell your digital product online?

Should I buy an SSL Certificate and Setup a Payment Processor or Is it more convenient to just sell it on ClickBank, JVZoo, and Amazon, etc?

Thanks,
CityCowboy

If you plan on running an affiliate system then go with Clickbank or Jvzoo.

yea that's what I thought, Putting an In-house Affiliate tracking system could really slow my website I guess...

BTW how does the affiliate system works on ClickBank, Is it easy to setup?

I've used several different in-house affiliate tracking systems (including one that I developed and license to others), and none of them (not even my competitors') add significant overhead to the website. (Any of them will easily run on a "baby gator" hosting account.)

Setup is pretty easy on CB, if you can get approved, but...
the affiliates are CB affiliates - not yours.

You license CB as a reseller of your product, and they allow their affiliates to promote the product. They subsequently pay you for every copy of your product that they "sell" (less their processing fee and any affiliate commissions they may have paid.

Unfortunately, they don't take on the workload that other resellers absorb. They still use YOUR sales page, and YOU are responsible for product delivery (i.e. your download page). They provide a network of affiliates, that may/may not promote your product (there are plenty of other products there for the affiliates to promote). They handle collection of payment from customer, and they decide what refund requests they will permit (i.e. any/all).

In short, you give up a lot of control in exchange for "easy".

Doing it in-house - You have to manage everything (Not worth the headache). Even with software it's still a pain.

Clickbank - The set-up for a vendor is painless (You have to follow there rules). They will verify everything and change you a 1 time fee..

JVZoo - Same deal - except no fee.

With JVZoo - They are not a payment processor (so you need an account at paypal or someplace else that they accept)

    If you do it yourself,

    - You have to make the payments
    - You have to collect sales tax, vat, whatever and remit that to the right country
    - You have to file 1099 for each affiliate in US
    - You have to file whatever paperwork you need in other countries the affiliates belong too.
    - You still have to pay a payment processor

It's really not worth the headache.

Affiliate payments can be automated with the right affiliate system.

If you are in the US, there are no sales taxes on digital goods/services sold online. If you are located in the EU, Paypal will handle collection of VAT and a single remittance can be made to a central authority.

A good affiliate system will automate the filing of Form-1099 if necessary, and/or provide an interface to any of a number of well established accounting packages so that 1099 forms can be generated.

While there are some foreign governments that "require" filing of tax documents of US citizens who sell online, it is doubtful that they can establish your liability nor enforce any such requirement.

The costs for payment processing are approximately 2.9% with Paypal, whereas using CB will cost approximately 7%. The various affiliate networks that provide payment processing charge similar fees.

It's really not worth the headache.
Certainly not... if you are dealing in chump change, but the additional 4% in transaction fees adds up pretty quickly if you are having any reasonable measure of success and that can be avoided by simply understanding what is required to run your own system and implementing a software solution that automates the most onerous of those additional tasks.

Clickbank and jvzoo would take a fair bit of the stress out of it
