If you are already #3 - Just stick to what you KNOW works.

Check out your competition backlinks in site explorer and try to duplicate some of their links, syndicate any feeds that you have, and maybe push a PR or 2.

If I was sitting at #3 already, the last thing I would do is to build links from profile placements.

While I know the service can help you, I'd like a little more information so that I can estimate how quickly it can help. You talk about "searches" but what is the competition for your keyword? I know that you would be looking at "actual competition" if you used quotes, but I do like people to look at the amount of competition without the quotes. That's because I'd like them to see the situation the way the actual people doing searches will see it, and most searchers don't use quotes.

For super high competition, it takes a bit longer than it does if you have 500,000 or fewer competing sites without quotes but it can be done regardless.

Not to put anyone's ideas down, but I actually don't recommend that people focus only on the backlinks of their competitors. It's good to take a look, because if they have some good ones you might be able to get those type too. But if everybody has all the same backlinks, how is that going to give anyone an edge? That's like saying that everyone should have the same hair and eye color, physical build, and facial features and then try to win a beauty pageant. You want better backlinks than your competitors. And unless all of theirs are Page Rank 6 and above, my service can give you that edge you are looking for.
