What is the Best Way to Get Press?

Hello

I own a bit of an outlandish website.

In the past, I have released press releases and then one news station found it, wrote about it.. and otters followed.

But.. its not always the best effective.

..

So.. am a bit naive to this..

But what do PR firms do? Do they have contacts in the media ? Is that mainly what they do?

I am just looking for a more efficient way than the good old press release and was wondering if you guys had any ideas.

PR could stand for "press release" or "public relations." The later definition, public relations, is probably what you're referring to.

PR agencies are hired by companies and individuals to enhance, protect, and manage their business images and reputations by feeding various media outlets positive images, stories and news about their business. Often a PR firm will spend time inside a business gathering and analyzing information, processes, products, company goals, etc, in an effort to craft the company story and message into something easily understood and accepted by the public.

Yes, often PR agencies will have media contacts that they go to again and again. Press releases are just one small arrow in the PR firm's quiver.

Most small solo business operators do their own public relations as it can be a costly expense for a small business.

Oilman, I don't know if this is more efficient, but if a "good old press release" means submitting to a site like PRWeb, it may be more effective.

So many SEOs bombed press release sites with thinly disguised ads for building backlinks that a lot of news outlets don't pay attention like they used to.

Better to build your own media list and submit your releases directly. Even better is getting to know the people on your list and submitting story ideas based on what you know of their interests.

It may not be as hands-off as uploading a release to a website, crossing your fingers and hoping it gets noticed. But it does tend to get better results. And as you saw, once an outlet does cover you and your story hits the wire, others pick it up.

Thanks for your nice response. I guess my ideal would be to find a one-man operation who has a lot of media connections.

i do it with a 2-men operation, however they do it like everyone else, its basically just
a submission process. No guarantees that after its listed on big media sites that someone
else will pick it up and write about it from their point of view.

So the whole thing boils down to: Your Story

is it unique, does it catch attention, does it create curiosity, got it a current news angle,
is it confrontational, does it have anything to do with donald or hellery, or is it simply
a heart warming sob story that supports the underdog that lost his life pension because
of system errors that need to corrected. Stuff like that gets eyeballs and comments.

Hey forgot 1 thing: The lost dog that traveled from NYC to San Diego all by himself,
he was declared lost since 2012 - now arrived at the owners door after all that time. lol.

A press release isn't an article they can publish "as is" - They would still have to do work to make an article from it.

Journalists are lazy so if you can write their article about you for them, there's a decent chance of getting it published if it lands on their desk at the right time. Give them an angle, provide photos, write the whole thing for them basically.
