Is it Just Me or are Others Tired of IMers Contacting Using a Different Email Address to that Given

Hi All,
I'll be interested in your thoughts. With many products given, customers are provided the option to designate an email address to receive their item and to receive communications; only to find if they pay by Paypal the vendors decide not only to communicate via the designated email, but also via the Paypal email address the customer uses to pay for the item also; and add salt to the wound they pass this email address along to their mates.

I'm right over this and have complained about this to Warrior Plus before and nothing gets done about it. To me this is highly unethical. If you provide customers with the option of designating what email address they want to receive the item and communications, then it is the responsibility of the vendor to use that email address only.

In fact what I now do is hit the unsubscribe button quick smart and if I'm in the mood I will inform the vendor to go crawl back under the rock they came from for spamming me. Especially as I try to retain my designated Paypal email address for other personal matters and have a designated email address for receipt of IM stuff and communications.

Just because you can see my Paypal email address doesn't give any damn vendor the right to start communicating with me via that email address when I have given a totally different email address to actually receive communications.

What do others think please?

It is all automated, just do like you said, unsubscribe.

Relax it is not the end of the world. So many people act like they are violated because they get emails.

Why not blame PayPal for providing the vendor with your email?

I'm not familiar with Aussie law regarding use of emails provided by the payment processor, but in the US, using the Paypal email for transactional email - emails having to do with your purchase, like download links, receipts, update notices, etc. - is perfectly legal.

Where some vendors cross the line is using the transactional email address to send promotional emails. If you are getting duplicate emails to both addresses, simply unsubscribe the email you don't want used. Problem solved.

If you start getting promotional emails from strangers to your Paypal address, hit the spam button and set up a filter to send their stuff straight to your junk folder. Again, problem solved.

Getting upset over an automated process like this is a waste of energy. You give up a chunk of your time and attention, while the vendor in question goes his merry way without even being aware of your feelings.

You need to blame PayPal for doing this... or you can simply pay using your CC and problem solved.

It would also come down to the TOS because somewhere in there I thought I saw a clause that by clicking the link you give them the right to pass on to 3rd party's ! a lot of people do not read TOS with Pay Pal

    Hi All,
Many thanks for your responses. Yes, I do hit the unsubscribe button, however, some IMers are actually promoting the fact Paypal provides the customer's Paypall email as fabulous so they can hit customers because they believe they get better results than using the email address that the customer provides.

Hence, so whilst I understand your automation argument - there are a number of IMers out there who are deliberately using the customer's Paypal email address and passing it along to their so called JV partners to do exactly the same instead of the email address customers have requested to receive communications and the product.

Hence, automation is only part of the argument; it's the fact that some IMers are deliberately going against the customer's request to contact via the specific email address the customer has provided which is to me highly unethical, and deliberately spamming people with their promotional crap and in breach of privacy legislation.

Australian law is: if a person designates the email address then this is the email address that must be used as the person has not provided written consent for vendors to use their Paypal email. Australian privacy law also is vendors simply cannot pass along a person's email to another party unless the customer has provided full written consent to do so. Hence, IMers are breaching 2 aspects of the Privacy legislation.

    (a) they are willfully ignoring (automation my foot!!!) the customer's request; and (b) they have not formally sought the customer's permission to pass the email along to their so called mates.

This is what I have an issue with. Yes, I can hit and unsubscribe and do - that's if they and their mates have an unsubcribe button in the first place (and some unfortunately don't); I can set the spam filters however if they have manually included the email address into their autoresponder, this can bypass spam filters because it's recognised as a legit sign up when in fact it is not.

I started this thread to raise this issue and awareness - that (a) it's highly unethical and (b) Imers are breaching customer's privacy and thereby the country legislation (where the customer resides) which in fact if a customer wanted to pursue would find the IMer being sued and/or fined heavily under the relevant legislative watchdog (In Aussie land - the Australian Privacy Commission).

Also a review of the Paypal User Agreement specifically states that the user is solely responsible ".. understanding and complying with any and all laws, rules and regulations of your specific jurisdiction that may be applicable to you in connection with your use of the Services" (https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mp...agreement-full)

A review of Paypal's Privacy Policy states: "We will not sell or rent your information to third parties for their marketing purposes without your explicit consent. However, in order for us to offer PayPal Services to our users; enhance the quality of PayPal Services from time to time; and protect the interests of our users, we will in limited circumstances share some of your information with third parties under strict restrictions, as described in more detail in Sections 3, 5, and 6 of this Privacy Policy. It is important for you to review this Privacy Policy as it applies to all the PayPal Services". Further along in this policy it states: "Please note that third parties you buy from and contract with may have their own privacy policies, and PayPal is not responsible for their operations, including but not limited to their information practices".

Therefore it is clearly up to the merchant/vendor to institute and observe all relevant legislation, rules etc. and implement relevant privacy strategies and policies to uphold the privacy of their customers at all times.
