Is It Possible To Set Up And Run An Internet Business Using Just A Smartphone?

Could I really run an Internet marketing biz with a smartphone (maybe with the occasional help from an iPad?

It would certainly be very easy and convenient to operate and the model would be by necessity have to be very uncomplicated technically speaking too.

Any thoughts on this along with any suitable business models you can think of would be gladly received.

You can't... every successful campaign requires extensive analysis of keywords - you need advanced Excel tools like Pivotable to be able to make sense of the data... also, most third-party applications are also desktop-based.

however, you can still use your smartphone to monitor your campaign.... but to build it from grounds up.... you do need a full computer

  • This would be highly difficult, but not impossible by any means.

There is one business model you may be able to succeed with using just a smartphone and/or tablet, and that would be Instagram marketing. If done right, you may be able to make money with CPA doing this.

However, I would at least recommend you buy your own domain to redirect to an affiliate product if you are going to go the Instagram route.

Another possibility would be blogging. You would need the use of a computer to get your blog set up, but from then on you could easily post from a smartphone or a tablet. WordPress even has a way for you to post right from your email account. If you have access to Gmail from your smartphone you could easily use that to compose your post and then post it to your blog. Of course, you could just as easily log into your blog and post right from the dashboard using your phone. I've done that many times while on vacation.

A good idea for a niche to get into if you just plan on using your phone or iPad is a travel or photography blog. You can post about different places you travel and post pictures of different places you've been. For that mater, you could even start a food review blog and post about different restaurants as you visit them. You can even take videos with your phone.

I definitely think it's possible to start an online business with just a phone or a tablet, but just understand that you would be up against a lot of different technical challenges that you may or may not be able to foresee.

One question though... Why not just buy a small laptop? This would give you the capability you need and would not have the restrictions of a phone or tablet.
  • It can be done, but it would be difficult to fully operate your Online Business from a Smartphone... even though there is a lot of Apps for everything from PayPal, WordPress, Gmail, your AR etc.

you will always need a Desktop or Laptop to setup things like your Email Campaigns, your website and Technical stuff that can't be done with just a smartphone.
  • Funny thing, when I started writing for clients all I had was a broken iPhone and I would write articles using Docs to go. It wasn't easy, but I made enough money to eventually buy a Lappy.
  • yes you can be done, but it Business operating from iPad or smartphone is too complicated.. u need to hire a App developer and u must to have a good high end server website or domain... if you good or expert in smartphone you can do it.

    • i agree. i am working with the best possible conection speed and developer to work out the solutions for me and it is working for me pretty well.
  • If you can use it to make and receive payments, yes.
  • Who cares?

If you have an idea for a successful business and the ability to make it happen, but to make it work you'll need to spend a few hundred bucks on a computer are you really going to let that stop you? And if you don't have an idea for a successful business yet, are you really going to limit your thinking to models that may well have much lower payoffs just to save that same few hundred bucks? Or if you find a model that works with just a smartphone, but could do it even better if you bought a computer, are you really not going to spend the money?

It just doesn't make sense to me.

If a business model is solid and you've got the ability to pull it off, it's worth investing in. Period. On the other hand, if the business model isn't solid, or if you don't have the ability to pull it off, it's not worth doing whether or not it requires investment. Moreover, if you're so risk adverse that you're not willing to invest in your business or if you don't have the ability to create a business that stands out from the competition, entrepreneurism probably isn't for you anyway. Whether or not you have a computer isn't going to change that.

    • I agree. But there are those travel bloggers who go from city to city and country to country blogging and making money that way. Maybe this could be something of value to them. I still would think you would at least want a Laptop
    • Zero sense to be sure

With the high failure rate of IM people should be asking what they need to be most productive and increase their chances of success not lower it so these minimal threads are of little value

Can I succeed with spending no money at all?
Can I rank a website with no links?
Can I have a website business without my own website?

In every other line of business if you don't have the basics you go work a job until you can start it. Only in Im do we get these questions and I have yet to hear a great success story of people who go down that route that can be confirmed.

  • no way hose..... all professional software is created for laptops, smartphones are only good for checking on the progress and looking at charts
  • You could if all you are doing is issuing instructions to your worker drones.

Ditch the idea, get a laptop and get to work. The fact that you can spend months (even years) trying to get something to work doesn't necessarily mean you should do it. It might not justify costs..

The internet changes every week so get down to work creating something that can add some value to peoples lives and leave these silly ideas behind.
  • You could, but your business opportunities or your operations would be quite limited as some websites and other IM nitty gritties are not smart phone friendly.
  • I think it would be completely impossible for the average business.

The only exception is if the company was completely virtual and you just oversee / delegate everyone else. Then the bulk of the time you may be able to get away with it.
  • you can, however it would be a major task to do.
  • im sure you can but do you want too.....
  • Tom

You can and it is not that hard , just have to think outside the box

I run mine that way via my phone and Ipad and I dont even have a website or social media

    Just takes some lateral thought

  • I'm not sure that you'd get access to everything you need on a day to day basis.

Can you run a business for a short period of time on a smartphone? Yes.

Would you want to do this for an extended period of time? No, probably not.

I need access to my Mac for detailed information and to professionaly write, so it's really just not an option. I think you'd be limiting yourself in some way by doing this.

  • i have been running a successful business from my cell phone for over an year and i find it extremely easy. this article adds up to my conviction that online business on the go works
  • It depends what things you want to automate, and what things that you don't. I do some stuff on my smartphone (mainly customer service) that are simple and easy. But if i need to go and edit some code on my site..... i'd wait till i got home to my home computer. So i wouldn't try to run the *entire* business on your phone. Plus mobile leads don't buy that well anyway.
  • I think it would be really challenging to do business this way, and while it might be good for when I am away from my desk I think having a laptop provides access to a range of functions that are really hard to do on a smartphone. call me old fashioned but a smartphone would be frustrating and really annoying to work on all the time.
  • [DELETED]
  • In your post you mentioned the Smartphone & Ipad, these two device is easy to transferable. That's why most of the people are using this device. It is small & long durability with a small battery. You can use these device for occasionally. Most of the time, you should use the PC. Thanks for understanding.
  • IMO No.
From what i've found works best for me - setting things up and writing content is best on a laptop/pc, modifying or doing smaller things can work on a tablet/phone
  • Depends on the type of business you're running. I actually run a business strictly from my phone. I never have to login to anything but two websites and check my email.

However if you're doing more than simple tasks, you probably need a computer.
  • A freelance bussines yes, an actual business with multiple functions NO. Smartphones are still very limited to carryout everything, take an example of putting together a report for a client, the amount of time you should put on a smartphone to create that report is 5 times of what you would spend on a PC.
But anyway, good luck and why did you ask?

    • I'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to respond here, it's very much appreciated.

In fact I do already own decent laptop and desktop computers but tend to find phones and tablets so much easier to use. And just imagine what a great selling point it would be to a technophobe if you were selling your IM business and you could say it's all run from a phone!

I do agree that the larger keyboards of a desk or laptop makes for a much easier life if you're doing a lot of writing and other complicated tasks.

But a model that could be run entirely from a phone would be by its very nature uncomplicated which is why I'd love to continue exploring the possibilities.

Therefore more posts here would be great.

      Thanks again everyone.

  • You can period. No question about it. I do 99 percent on the phone, the only reason I use the computer is to actually sit in my office chair.

I even have my phoned paired with a keyboard mouse and monitor.

The funniest thing I have ever learned is people who say it can't. All these people are the ones that do not make any money.

Do you know I can access my aws amazon server from my smart phone. A r3 that is super fast and powerful. I also have browsers that actually show the full website so I don't have to deal with mobile versions.

The wave of the future is smart technology. Tablets, phones and watches will all amaze everyone. Marketing should be geared to those as well.
  • I am going to expand on my last conversation. In 2011 I asked in digital forums if you could make money on lllll.com domains. lmao, they all said it would be a long time because too many llll still around.

  • on second thought,

yes. if you had a team headed by a manager that you communicated with via what's app

    then I imagine you could.
  • I don't think keywords are the biggest issue, but content creation IMO, would be difficult.

Even to do a basic content marketing campaign, you're going to need text, some video and images. I might be a generation or two behind on my Iphone, but I couldn't come close to getting that all done on my phone.
  • That is way no, smartphone is not really intended to be use in business though it can perform some tasks of a normal computer, however it's still phone , there are things that can only be done in computer, if you will be starting a business, it is really important to invest of having a good device that can perform any task.
I've been in that situation as well where I can't start my online business because I know that even I have the latest Iphone that doesn't do the things computer does .
So try to have a computer or at least a laptop to start up! good luck
  • I have not not done this, but I do not see why you couldn't run an authority blog from a smartphone. It may be better to set it up on a lap top or desktop, but adding comments, promoting on social media, and answering email could be handled entirely on a smartphone. Wordpress has a mobile app for this.

You could sell your own products or do affiliate marketing or MLM 100% on a smartphone as well. Skype has an app that si easy to use for chatting, talking, and video.

This mobile running of a business very exciting idea when you think that Google says 90% of all searches will be done on a smartphone in the near future, so I guess as Internet marketers we better be ready! They already have been punishing blogs and websites that are not mobile friendly or responsive.
  • I know people who claim they do it, but I don't see how. There's too much you need an actual computer to do when running an online business that wouldn't translate well to a phone. I won't say it's impossible, because I don't believe anything is. I just think it would be extremely challenging to most people, and require a specialized set of skills I haven't developed yet. I could see maybe doing it all on a tablet, but even that would be challenging in itself. You could definitely do some things with a phone, but I'd be impressed to actually see anyone doing everything with it.
  • It's possible but not the best use of your time.
  • I can do most things, make and publish videos, take money, check stats, write emails and all sorts- the only issue I have is publishing or editing online courses via wordpress / optimize press .. which can get fiddly but if you were using a course platform this could be possible too.
  • You have two ways.
    1. install on your smartphone the apps specifically for platforms you use (Paypal, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.)
    2. For all other buy a VPS (Virtual Private Server), use a remote connection software like Teamviewer so you'll your dekstop on your smartphone. You can buy a bluetooth combo (mouse + keyboard) for better usability. Of couse you need internet connection.

  • Hi Tim,

    Of course you can.

It isn't nearly as difficult as some folks on this thread have asserted. They just have very limited thinking, in my opinion.

There have been many a business created from scratch with little more than a phone and a fax machine, why would it be any more difficult to do the same with a smart phone and a smart strategy?

Sure there are some things that may need to be done that are best done with specialized tools. However a resourceful person knows they can always outsource specialized tasks. You can hire an attorney, accountant, and sales reps all using nothing but your phone, right?

You can hire an advertising agency using nothing but your phone right?

You can communicate with your customers, vendors and employees using nothing but your phone, right?

You can delegate tasks using nothing but your phone, right?

You can manage your project with smartphone apps like Todoist, Asana, or Trello using nothing but your phone right?

You can hire developers using nothing but your phone, right?

You can do all your banking using nothing but your smartphone, right?

You can send emails using nothing but your smartphone, right?

You can hire copywriters and campaign managers using nothing but your phone, right?

You can make conference calls and video conferencing calls, using nothing but your smartphone, right?

    On and on it goes...

You have very few limitations, except those that you setup for yourself.

It's not your resources that limit you, it is your lack of resourcefulness.

If you can build an empire using nothing but a desk phone and a fax machine, you damn well can build an empire using your smartphone.

Success belongs to those that adapt.

  • Not feasible, but once up and running, possible yes. I just came back from Dubai and promised to myself i will only take out my Macbook, last resort. I was working off my iPad. Within a few hours of landing, the Macbook was out!
  • [DELETED]
  • I'm sure there is some model out there that would be suitable...

But I imagine it would be very difficult at the beginning. Like many warriors have said, it would be possible if you were a manager and outsourced all of your tasks to freelancers etc

However, getting to that point would take signifcant time and effort I imagine.

Personally I have an iPad and IMO its basically the same as a phone when it comes to IM. In the sense that you are better off with a PC/laptop/mac.

    My two cents.

Just get a cheap laptop or pc. IMPORTANT IS EARN MONEY.

My iMac is old , I find it kinda slow but still can use. As long I can use why waste money buy a new one unless it really dead.

I use to chase high speed computer and feel it does aid my work no doubt yes but slowly I feel the main agenda is earn money.

Some IM own slow laptop , PC yet earn a lot and they don't upgrade their pc since still workable.

whereas I do know some iM own multi PC, one PC run software auto run , one PC edit etc

is all up to individuals but for me , the main agenda is as long the computer is working is fine MOST important is I able to earn money.

just get a small laptop no need to be fast, if you always travel around.

    • You guys have joined the ranks of people that told Henry Ford that he would never be able to build an automobile that middle class Americans could afford to buy. You were wrong.

Folks like you said to Walt Disney that no one would pay $20 a head to attend a theme park. You were wrong.

Your type told Frederick Smith, founder of Fedex that no one would pay for overnight delivery at 50 times the cost of a postage stamp. You were wrong.

People like you said that Elon Musk could never build an electric vehicle that people would actually want to buy. You were wrong.

And now you say that you can't start an Internet marketing business with just a smartphone and an iPad. The likes of you have been proven wrong time and time again. I say you are wrong, yet again.

Hell, it wouldn't be hard at all to start an Internet marketing business with nothing but a smartphone and a tablet computer.

You are trapped by your limited thinking and your limited beliefs. I challenge you to step outside of your own limited success and look around at all the people that keep accomplishing what you claim is impossible. Nothing is impossible if your belief is strong enough.

    • So you state people should not have religion.
"That which is asserted without evidence will be dismissed without evidence." is what is your signature. No religion can be confirmed with science.

Why do you need evidence of something first. Why not be a forerunner and create your own evidence. I do not do full work on my smartphone, but my setup lets me do all of it if I want too. It is great for the lake or other out of the way places.

I even built an antenna from an old dish to get great reception wherever I am. You can find instructions on how to do this on the web.

You can also find instructions on how to run a virtual server on your smart phone, how to set up a mouse and keyboard as well as how to mirror your phone to your t.v. or monitor.

Plenty of evidence for you if you would just search and quit saying Warrior forums favorite word "NO"!
    • Aha...

Mike Anthony has come out opposed to the idea, now you can be certain that the opposite is likely true. He is the ultimate contrarian always bringing the straw man augment where logic fails.

No one has made an argument that smart phones and tablets are the "best" tools for every task. Mike, as usual likes to create fake assertions and then argue against his own false assertions.

Smart phones are very powerful computers, despite their small size, and tablets have a plenty of screen space for viewing finer details. No reason in the world that a person cannot start a business with just those tools. As I pointed out many people have started their businesses with far less.

I don't see anyone in this thread has suggested that a person should not get better tools when able to, but lack of those or other better tools is no reason to not pursue your dreams, in my opinion. Use what you've got and get better tools when you can. If there is a will, there is a way.

You know setting up a website's platform (wp.html etc), designing it , handling images and files associated with it, writing all the content for it,setting up cart and auto responders, upsells, keep up with the competition's non mobile pages etc etc.

When you are done I'll show how can be done under an hour if you even go over to someone's house with a laptop, Ipad or chromebook or even an internet cafe.

    • Now I can understand why so many turn there ears when this guy or thing speaks.

I gave you the knowledge, vmware for an android, a virtual operating system. Some will say the android is not strong enough to run it. It is not the operating system you are running on the phone, it is the vmware you are running. Almost any new smart phone can run that. Buy either a bluetooth mouse and keyboard or air mouse and keyboard, if you want a larger screen then you need a mirror app to see it their.

As I also stated I made an antenna to boost my signal with an old direct tv dish, you can find instructions for this on the net.

Just ignore the naysayers and try it if you think you want to do it. The worst thing is you can fail. We are all failures till we become winners.

  • I have several income streams now and most need a laptop to do certain things but I do have one very lucrative income stream that I do entirely on my smartphone and that is the Instagram Shoutout business. I teach this in my sig below but you grow Instagram accounts to 100k following and up and then you can use your Instagram account as a mini advertising platform and basically sell sponsored posts or as they are called shoutouts where people pay you to expose their Instagram account or business to your accounts massive following to get leads and customers and REAL followers.

Since Instagram wants you to use them on your smartphone or tablet you can do everything you need to do on your smartphone. You can access Instagram through their App, You also use Paypal for payments and image and video editing Apps for your posts and they are all smartphone apps. You need Kik(instant messaging app) so customers can send you their caption that you just copy and paste under their pic or video. You use email. For automation in growing your Instagram accounts you can use instagress.com and their site is mobile responsive so actually I can run my Instagram shoutout business entirely from my smartphone which is great.

But for my other income streams a laptop is necessary for certain tasks.
  • If there's a business I can think of with just using smartphones and ipads is dropshipping business + shopify and you get traffic from instagram.
  • Yes! but it's limited...

That's the reason there is called screen resolution...

Most marketing strategies would not work on smartphone.

Unless you have an existing audience then communicate with your audience to ask for what you'd like them to help you with.

  • I have also since setup a virtual server on my cell phone. As well as set up a mirroring device for my big screen T.V.

Now it is called a full computer, air mouse and keyboard, big screen t.v. and a virtual computer that runs windows server 2008.

So to all the nay sayers who love to say no because they have not tried it, then shame on you. Quit telling people something cannot be done, when almost anything can be done.
  • To some extent your smartphone will help you but to run an internet business you need to have a computer. Obviously its not that convenient as your smartphone but we can not help it.
    Good Luck!!
  • Plainly put YES you could. How successful would it be? Not sure. Could be enough if you're happy with it.

It will be difficult tho. The way you do it? Affiliate marketing.

    1. Do video marketing using the smart phone
    2. Build a list & all email tools have phone options
    3. Email offers thru provider

You can make money doing this. If one can do video marketing, email marketing, & send links on a computer it can be done on a phone. It'll be harder of course but possible.

Would it be recommended? Only if theres no other choice. i.e. you do what you gotta do to make ish happen!

If theres a choice then don't. Use a computer. You'll be so much more effective. #successwithsamii
