How do you pick which content idea to focus on when you have many?

Hello Warriors,

First post here! I was wondering how you decide which content idea to focus on and publish when you have many. I find generating ideas not as difficult as most people do and I can generate lot of ideas with most topics rather quickly. But, time is limited and I can't explore all the ideas. Consider you have 100 content ideas for a niche. But, you can only work on and publish 20 of those. Do you follow any process/ system to prune the ideas and decide the best ones?

If you are reading this post and need help with idea generation (not just content, but other things as well), keep the following in mind when you ideate:

1. Focus on a single idea. This doesn't mean all the other posts/ content have to follow that narrow niche/ idea. But, this content piece should be focused around only that single idea/ angle.

2. Break your idea into all of its parts. For eg. if you are writing in internet marketing space and one blog topic could be "How to use web analytics to drive profitable decisions?". We can break the different parts and generate new ideas.

There are three parts with the above blog topic - "How", "Web Analytics" and "Profitable Decisions". We can switch the first "How" with "Which". Then we have a new topic to write about - "Which web analytics to use to drive profitable decisions?" - Now, we can talk about google analytics, webtrends or omniture and compare their offerings.

This is only one of the many strategies that can be used to generate countless ideas.

But, I have a difficulty on deciding which of those ideas to prioritize. I would greatly appreciate if you have any process in place to make such decisions.

Thanks!

Just random thoughts, you can generate a lot of ideas at the same time but not all of them are feasible, interesting, attractive and unique as the others right? If that's the case, just pick the ones most unique and attractive btw, jealous with u about that, haha

I focus on the one that will have the biggest potential return with the least amount of effort.

So in your case I would look at the most asked questions in the niche and write 20 articles answering those. I would also obviously spend time creating a content upgrade to get readers onto a list

I go with what I like and/or where the money is easiest to get.

This really is the most important thing. I have decided the following approach (which I will definitely refine along the way).

In my list of ideas (typically a spreadsheet), I will relatively rank each idea in terms of
      - How focused it is to the goal (whether it is generating new leads/ monetize offers etc)
      - How important it is to the community (are people in the community seeking answers in forums or in comments etc)
      - Curiosity/ Viral Factor of the idea

      Thanks for helping me out.

    OP,

There are a lot of methods that work and we really can't tell you which one to focus on.

Read through the forums, Pick out a method (Such as List Building, CPA) and learn more about that method.

After you feel comfortable you should start taking action on what you have learned.

Learning is great, but most get caught up in the learning stage and that is where they usually stay.

    Apply what you learn!
