I've been reading a heap of articles lately to get a better understanding of SEO and how to use it best on client's and my own website. I thought I would share some points from one I read recently.

Ben Mitchell’s article on how Mention.com increased search traffic almost 400% in only six weeks is a must read in my opinion. Any company can get that sort of traction in such a short time are worth reading about.

Mention.com is an online media monitoring platform that can monitor billions of sources in over 40 languages across the globe so you can monitor and be aware of anything that is being said about your brand in real time. It’s quite possibly one of the simplest and effective ways to be engaged in the global conversion for your business, and the technology is effective enough to allow digital marketers the ability to monitor and update keywords and subject matter to connect with their audience like never before.

Before platforms such as Mention.com were available for users, media monitoring was a manual process and one which was an arduous process. Fast forward to today and mention.com connects with account holders instantly on their smartphones, offering seriously swift media monitoring to over half a million account holders.

Outlined below are a few tips Ben Mitchell outlined which contributed to mention.com’s success:
  • Focus on user experience - every step in the process should make your website’s user experience better.
  • Maximise ‘link juice’ - backlinks act like references to your business and website and links from high authorities will provide you better stead on Google. While it is hard to measure, value to given to links that have better ‘link juice’.
  • Choose the right keywords - as part of their SEO strategy; Mention.com started to take keywords seriously. Choosing and featuring the right keywords is key if you want to get projected in Google search rankings.
  • Higher the volume the better - high volume keywords that are a perfect match for your product are essential and the more of them you have, the better.
  • Choose difficult keywords - it can be worth choosing terms that are high volume yet relatively high difficulty. Mention.com targeted five or more major keywords in their quest to improve their search traffic.
  • Ensure low-difficulty keywords fit your business - ensure you deliver what people are looking for and your keywords bring visitors who are looking for your product. Otherwise, you might get visits but because these people won’t buy they will lower your search rankings. Make each visit count.
  • Get your headings right - ensure you have H1 and H2 in the right order (and make them count as they are super important) and then from this, every other heading should be in the correct order, and all headings should have keywords in it.
  • Change your 302 redirect links to 301 - the 301 links are permanent and tell Google that this has replaced another page, 302 redirects are temporary. Interestingly 301 also carry plenty of link juice (which is a good thing).
  • Update the new nav bar - this is really important for universal navigation, and this will have a backlink from every page on your website. Ensure your navigation bar always helps people to get where they need to go.
