Where to Start if You're Broke

I see these questions a lot. I need money. How can I start making money in IM, but I don't have much money to spend or invest right now. What can I do?

Well, I started as a total newbie six years ago. And here's a few things I've learned:

First do the obvious stuff:

1. Get a job - Part time or full time. Get some 8-5pm money coming in.
2. Cut expenses - Reduce your cellphone plan, cut cable, drop subscriptions, etc.
3. Sell stuff - Find stuff you're not using or you don't need and post on ebay/facebook/etsy, etc.
4. Lower your overhead - Sell your car, your house etc. Lower your rent. Take in a roommate. Move in with someone else.
Move closer to work and walk, ride a bike, or take the bus. Negotiate reduced payments with credit cards and student loans, etc.

Treat Internet Marketing like a part time job:

1. Learn how to get the most out of this forum - And here's a great post with tips on how to use the WF:
http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-business.html

2. Start learning some basics techniques to drive product sales - Most people start with list building and affiliate marketing, or selling PLR.
3. Put in a few hours daily to learn and test out techniques your learning.

Develop a healthy mindset:

1. Have realistic expectations - Few people get rich in their first 30 days. Give yourself time to learn, grow, fail and get better.
2. Positive mental attitude - Avoid negativity. Don't share your new goals with negative people, even friends or family if they're not supportive.
Feed yourself a few minutes each day with self-help videos and audios. Read encouraging blogs. Speak positive affirmations outloud.

Work on new skills:

1. It's take effort and time - Give yourself that time, and focus on learning skills you like. Youtube, WSOs and Udemy are a great place to start.
2. IM can be a trade - Internet Marketing is a real skillset, which most people don't have. Learn the skills and soon enough you'll get paid like most people don't.
3. Find your niche - Apply your skils to a specific method you like and are becoming good at. Focus on your strengths.
Apply your strengths to one method and monetize that. It's as simple as finding your niche, monetizing that niche, then scaling it up.

Keep it Simple:

1. Avoid Distractions - Once you start learning and having a little bit of success, it's easy to get distracted by every other method out there.
Avoid adding additional methods until you're really profitable at one method.
2. Avoid Complication - Often the more you know tempts you to overthink stuff. Most IM techniques don't have to be complicated, but we tend to make them complicated.
Here's a great post on staying 'in the zone' with your method and not getting bogged down:
http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...tuff-done.html

Most anyone with ambition, determination and discipline can go from 'broke to banking' with IM. The opportunity is there. It's real. Believe in yourself and don't give up.

Life is short, just go for it.

  • Like all the lists of super-cool gurus to follow and cutting edge marketing "hacks" and...

There are two groups of Internet marketers: The actual marketers and the "enthusiasts."

Enthusiasts love to talk about all the really cool, cutting edge "tactics." Gurus get them all tingly and hot. They absolutely must be in on the latest trends, etc.

The actual marketers do what marketers do, advertise, optimize, repeat.
    • [ 4 ] Thanks
  • Great advice for newbies right there.

Would add to drop bad money-wasting habits such as: smoking, drinking/partying, buying junk food.

I really liked the part where you said think of IM as a trade - because it pretty much is. It takes at least a few years to get good at this, which is similar to a 4/5 year apprenticeship in the trades.
  • This was for me Thanks Jeff, you put it so nicely. With so much noise on web, and flood of opinions and 'success stories', distraction is the most common thing newbies fall prey for.

However, it's been a while I have found a way around it and things have improved incredibly since then.
STAY FOCUSED. STAY CONSISTENT. Cheers! Junaid
  • Great advice. So easy to overthink stuff and only jump when everything is absolutely perfect.

  • 1. Get a job

    Can't second this enough.

Only thing I can add to that point is automate.

Automate the sh** out of everything that can be automated--that way you save time, which, if leveraged correctly, can be converted to money. If you're a web/graphic designer, opportunityengine.io is a good place to start.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Among all the items on that list, the PROPER MINDSET must come first

Without the right attitude, it would be much harder to do all the other things on that list

After all, our ATTITUDE determines our ALTITUDE in life

  • Awesome OP, very helpful for those just getting started.

  • Thanks Jeff . . . a thoughtful post.

Yes, you need to sacrifice in order to see your dreams come true.

Most people don't like that concept . . . but when you think about it, what major accomplishments have you every attained in your life without it?

Becoming a great ball player, mastering the piano, achieving a university degree, overcoming a major addiction, or getting fit and healthy . . .

All these great accomplishments require that you sacrifice other things in your life. Internet marketing success is no different.

And yes, it is worth it!

    • [ 3 ] Thanks

    • Steve, great reply post! Sacrifice is a great common ground to the examples you gave above, and no doubt have a relation to internet marketing and making money online. Still, there are more commonalities:

Practice and dedication. To master something you not only sacrifice a great deal, but you also must dedicate yourself to your craft and/or trade. Practice facilitates success, and it demands action.

So, along with sacrifice... dedication, practice and action will put you on the track to success.

      Best,
      Joshua C.

P.S. Oh, determination is what allows you to not fail, because when you do fall you will be determined to get back up and succeed. Many people may have sacrificed a lot, and they were dedicated when they took action, but if they fail once or twice, and they lose their determination to continue onward, success will be lost and eternal failure will be gained.

Best advice I can give a newcomer in the internet marketing world is, don't let yourself become discouraged from a failure... Use it as a learning experience and continue onward. Babe Ruth was among the greatest of the great in baseball, and even he struck out more than he hit a home run, but he held his head high and he met failure with future success.
  • Great post Jeff, solid and thorough advice!

If it's any consolation, one of the biggest setbacks I had was 'tech stuff' and getting familiar with building a decent WordPress site. Today I received an interesting email that could help anyone struggling with designing a decent site and it's 100% free!

BBE The Bootstrap Builder for WordPress - YouTube
Then, if someone wanted to kick it up a notch, "The Animator" from CSS-Hero is also FREE!
    See demo here> http://www.csshero.org/animator/

Lastly, for those who are not tech savvy and wanted to take it to the next level without knowing any code... CSS-Hero is running a 50% off Independence Sale.

Any way, here's the link to the BBE theme tweaks you can add with CSS -Hero, and if you click pricing, you'll see the sale pricing. (*Again no affiliation.)

With just these 2 FREE offerings this could solve a big problem many newbies face, I know it took me a good minute to get 1/2 way decent at design, no coding is a great starting point, and eliminates the 'excuse' I used for a long time!

There's some videos here> Customize the BBE WordPress Theme with CSSHero

  • 'Get a job' and 'it takes effort and time' are my two key learnings here - it does my head in that people believe you can get it all in an instant. It takes time and you usually have to make heaps of mistakes on the ways there.... I also believe there is a small amount of risk that can help you reach your goals.

  • Good saying. It's not the end of the world when you're broke. Every one can have a new start with nothing in hand as long as we still hvae hopes and try our best. When there's a chance to make money, just go for it. Never think you get nothing by trying something new. You always have 1 thing: experience to make you feel stronger after every challange. I feel glad and motivated when reading your post. Thanks!

    2. Positive mental attitude - Avoid negativity. Don't share your new goals with negative people, even friends or family if they're not supportive.

    even relatives too

I do happen share to my parents how I going to earn money via online , they straight away give me negative reply.
well I guess can't blame family , parents as they still feel go out work do 8 to 6 job is a proper way to earn a living.

they heard too much scam about internet online marketing etc thus always give feel you can't make it or even get scam online doing all these so call make money , internet marketing blah blah stuffs.

The ONLY way to proof them and shut their mouth is show them weekly money been earn..

I can tell you , they will give a 360 degree change and tell you wow that is amazing can earn money via online etc.

they will even proudly tell others hey my son , blah blah work from home just using Internet

because till now to be frank a lot still feel You can't earn much money doing all these what making money online marketing etc.

  • I'd add another option:

If you're brand new, start by offering a service and freelance.

Find something you'll need to do for your business (writing articles was my choice, but you could choose something else, like creating websites, graphics, etc.) and then perform that service for other, more established biz people.

    1. You'll bring in quick money.
    2. You'll learn while you earn. When I wrote articles for others, I learned about keyword research, blog posting (more than I knew already as a hobby), PLR (some of my work was sold as PLR packs by others), membership sites (some of my work was monthly content for niche membership sites), and more.
    3. You'll have money to invest in your own biz. I made the shift from freelancing to my own biz over time.

Another thought: there's no shame in having a 9-5 job while you freelance on the side. Money in the bank makes for a lot less stress when you build a biz.
    • [ 5 ] Thanks
  • Thank you very much Jeff and others for such cool tips. Really needed at this time.

  • It comes down to knowledge. It only takes $20 and 1 hour to make a website to sell a product. Simply choose an item from Aliexpress that you will make at least $100 profit with per sale, then sell it. As far as an 8am-5pm job, well you could make a website on your first break and lunch, then market it on your 2nd break. By the end of the day you could already have a sale... or more.

  • Great post Jeff. Most people start their online adventures with the ''Make Money Online'' Google search. They get promises that they will be millionaires by this time tomorrow if they just pay a one time fee of X amount. Rinse and repeat. A lot of them then get stuck in that cycle reaching for the next big system that is going to make them rich.

If I was starting out from a broke point, I would certainly use sites like UpWork or similar, sell a skill that I have and if I don't have it... I'd outsource it.

Yep, "I tried this for a week, and didn't make any money."

Well maybe because it takes practice and we all have to learn and get better. There is always an entrance fee, a price to pay. So pay it and get to work.

  • This is great information for people just starting out.

On the other hand, I would like to add another point for these people - and that is don't quit your day job! I started making over $10k in my first few months of IM with SEO and then a Google update happened and decimated everything. So having IM as well as a full time job is a great idea!
  • avoid distraction is the most difficult because there are many seems too good methods to try

  • I agree that you need to have a full-time or at least part-time job to have some money coming in.
  • Fabulous post and totally agree. I would add, if you're unemployed, use some of the hours to learn how to create a sustainable online business. Sure beats being bored!!!
  • Hi Jeff,

All are super solid practical tips

I'd focus most energies on the mindset thing in the beginning and then the practical tips will fall into your lap AND you will act inspired. The broke thing happens when you are aligned with lack and limits. The money making bit happens when you are aligned with abundance.

Example; you may resist getting a job when broke, and try to use IM as an ATM, because you fear giving up on your IM dreams. Which leads to low energy IM strategies, and more brokeness. Or, you may fear that working a job will quench your IM fire as when you make some money you'll lose your passion for the online bit. I've no idea how folks are wired so only they can work on their mindset, raise their vibes and then take the inspired action which is appropriate for you.

When broke IMers ask me what to do, I've offered the "get a job to cover bills advice" and the "dive into your IM biz 100% advice." Because each works for different individuals. I did not get a job when broke in IM. Struggled like hell. For years. Guess what? That struggle gave me the clarity to appear on a billionaire's blog. I spoke at NYU and appeared on Forbes and was tweet endorsed by a NY Times Best Selling Author because I stripped away many of the fears I'd never have reached if I was comfy and cozy, working a 9-5, with all bills paid, because I'd have lost the urge to CONSTANTLY explore the limits of what's possible and of course, when you're not doing that, you'll operate at .0000000001% of your potential. I'm at least up to .00001% now (writing 126 eBooks, etc) because I dove in, cleared out mental poopoo and forged my way thru the lower energies associated with not stacking that chedda. But again.....everybody is different.

Why do you want to do IM? Make the reason both fun and freeing and you'll feel intuitive nudges to either get a job to cover bills or to dive into IM 100%, full-bore. You can have super success with each approach; all depends on your path, your clarity and your predominant intent as to why you are doing IM.

  • Great & cool info for newbies here, nice stuff
  • thank you very much because of you that I have learned many things over
  • It's hard but when you are completely broke and just starting out, you need to forget that you're broke. Really successful entrepreneurs, for the most part, didn't start their businesses because they were broke and desperate. They started their businesses out of a passion for a great idea or a desire to succeed and build a better life.

This business should be the same. Do something that you're passionate about and allow the money to flow in from there.
  • yeah Just go to google and find a demand then someplace like clickbank and find a product that has good gravity. Grab your affiliate link and set up tracking for each traffic source. Choose around 2 to 3 traffic sources that matches your demographics and share your link.
  • There's a lot of good info here.

I'll share a little bit of what I did when I started years ago (note, things are a little different now).

When I first started I focused mostly on paid traffic, but wanted to find a way to offset the costs.

My first non-paid website was around a sports team which I really liked and follow, I just created a website about it and just kept creating new posts and eventually started to monetize it with adsense (and I think text-link-ads? it's been a while so I kind of forget some of the details). It didn't make a killing but it made a little bit to help pay for some of my other expenses.

Also, once epn (ebaypartnernetwork) launched, I created several sites to promote different niches. At one point I had approx 10 sites running and creating new ones every once and a while and was making a few thousand a month in the best of months. Unfortunately they have changed how they calculate commission and those days are over. The moral of the story is, there are many things you can do to help.

I know many people that did tasks like link building, writing articles, etc for extra cash.

The good thing is if you do stuff like this, although it might not be much fun, you are starting your online journey and you will hopefully meet and network with some people along the way.

    Best of luck!
  • [DELETED]
  • It is as simple as finding your niche, monetizing that niche, then scaling it up....
  • I like the part keep it simple
  • Avoiding distractions is the hardest one of all in my personal opinion. But making a list definitely helps. Problem is making a habit out of making a list. That's my struggle. Thanks for the post.

  • Don't forget to outsource your jobs so everything will be more efficient and you'll have more time to enjoy life
  • I have a job, and while I'm not broke, I still heed this advice in order t save up. Thanks for the post
  • i agree, u cant jump into this biz if u r broker n hoping to make tons of immediTe money
  • Thanks man, great advice.
I want to add my two cents:
Be positive and nice to everyone. It pays eventually. Help people, smile and even try to be funny sometimes. It will help YOU with keeping positive when things seem too hard. If you let yourself think negative thoughts it will eventually ruin you. The world keeps trying to resist and you will get what you want only if you have the energy and the power to fight that resistance.

Yep. I've heard it said that the richest men in the world build networks.

    • From my experience there are two ways to start a journey of this type and this depends on whether you have money or not.

If you have money you can afford to purchase coaching and training and software to make the journey all that more enjoyable and expedient. If you don't have money you will need to spend more time to learn the ropes and utilize some of the less powerful software tools and options at your disposal.

Having money definitely gives you more flexibility and power so I would personally say the thing you really need to do is get some money for starters! Some will say that it's hard to get a job in this climate but it really is not that hard at all. You can even get a great job in IT (i.e.: Information Technology) with no degree or experience if you know some of the secrets on how to approach it.

No matter what, don't give up. The race is not always to the fastest or the strongest but to those who finish the race. It will take you time to learn what particular area interests you the most and how to make money in this area but it is definitely worth it.

      All the best to you!
  • Nice list. Getting a job with flexible hours would help. I've been doing online marketing for 15 years and kept my full time job and benefits.
  • of course they do. i call banks a ponzi scheme. basically most financing is a ponzi.

    • Yeah List Building is important. Especially in the Internet Realm. And it has been effective for countless Offline brick and mortar businesses and traditional Mail order.

But to say EVERY business it is essential.....well is a stretch and actually not true at all..

Iam sure the Core of business the NBA does not rely on List Building, And also many high profile Media types of Businesses and Corporations. as well as Business to Business Industrial Companies. do not rely on it.

My Uncle worked for Pfizer for over 30 years. When they got out of the Chemical Business ( think Citric Acid, High Fructose Corn Syrup etc..etc..) he quit and went into business for himself and took those Clients and started servicing them making well over 600K a year as a one man show.
      '

My Uncle has a handful of clients and has for over 23 years. He does no type of List Building. And does correspond through Email. But he is business to Business.

So let's realize that List Building is NOT only not used by many Businesses but it would not even work or make sense and would be counter productive. for some

  • I've gotten a lot of positive energetic exchanges that weren't necessarily money, but other things I needed for my business by doing a 'trade' of some sort. For example, I couldn't build a website or do graphic designing, but am strong in facebook marketing. So, I have met some friends online through conversation exchanges that helped me with my ebook picture formatting and website while I helped them with facebook marketing.

Once you set your intent in place and actually need something - like help with a project you're actively working on, you could find someone to help you in exchange for a skill you have. Or, maybe even just for free (I've had this happened a few times) if you can't come up with money.

  • Think there are two main parts to tackle first and foremost is if you are broke, find a job, you really need to, IM can help you in the long term with a lot of hard work, but a normal job will give you the money you need to survive in the short term. Second work on having the right mindset, be aware you might not strike success right away, it can take a long time for the good times to roll, you need to be fully prepared for this and have stick with the can do attitude. Too many just give up after a short while because all the immediate success promises they buy into are too much work and don't provide the success they crave straight away.
  • good advice, however I disagree with Get a Job.
Find a good product and become an affiliate for it, no outlay but reap the rewards.

    • "Becoming and affiliate" is indeed the easy part.

If you believe the hundreds of threads and thousands of posts on this forum, "reaping the rewards" is a lot harder. At least for the average IMer.

I see these questions a lot. I need money. How can I start making money in IM, but I don't have much money to spend or invest right now. What can I do? Well, I started as a total newbie six years ago. And here's a few things I've learned:
