I have to ask. Is my story common? I have written 12 articles based on the make-money niche and I created two websites. I've been learning and implementing what I have learned for four months and haven't had one one sale, yet. But I'm working at it. I know that it is a very competitive market and that I may not get any responses. But the following two observations have knocked the wind out of me.

1) After a couple of days my first website appeared at the top of the organic list in Google by searching on the first two words. That lasted for about a week. The next time I checked, some other blog site was at the top but the curious thing was that the organic search was based on my website name in its entirety. There was even a partial quote from one of my posts. When I clicked on the (my) organic heading of that listing, it led me to a social blog that had nothing to do with my subject. There was no reference or access to my site. How do they (whoever they are) do that?

2) I did a google search on the 12 articles I have written using quotes around the title. What I found was very discouraging.

I saw three differnet scenarios: 1) my article was quoted in its entirety, including byline and that's good; 2) the article was used but throughout the text of my article there were links implanted to other sites that I had not implanted and my byline URL at the bottom was not highlighted (not linkable); 3) Only an excerpt of the article was quoted with a "read more" button that when clicked leads you nowhere or to another site or advertisement.

Does this happen often? It is very discouraging. It's bad enough that the competition is high. To have your work pirated is almost criminal. It's certainly discouraging. Is this something I have to live with? Are there authorities that can be petitioned? Can someone explain this to me?
Thanks,
Carlos

Well, as far as not making any sales you said it above. The competition goes beyond what you see on the surface at Google. As you learn more you will find that backlinks from high PR sites plays an important role in getting listed where and for how long.

The social sites that you were asking about have those high PR and extremely fresh content that Google likes. The problem is that the information from them is so fresh that the content changes fast and by the time you see it listed on the search engines the blog post and title have already moved down the list at the social site.

The links that were implanted is an automatic script that takes certain words and turns them into anchor text.

Not having your bio box link clickable is not part of the agreement at the article directory like EzineArticles. They only state that the information stay intact. Which it is.

This is another good reason to put your content on your site first so the original work is recognized by Google by the time people start taking it. Then when you submit it to the directories and someone picks it up to put on their site they are the duplicate not you.

It discourages people from grabbing your content to get ranked.

It can be very discouraging. I would suggest that you find a niche that is not as competitive.

      Matt, Thank you.

I will make sure to post on my blog/website first. Now I better understand the argument for posting on your site first.

After three+ months of hard 10/12 hour days and not one sale, I was toying with the idea of expanding the areas I'd like to market.

I've been busy learning how to create and tweak my website, learning about SEO, article marketing, etc., etc. while attempting to implement what I'm learning. Steep learning curve for an old dog.

Jumping into another niche or series of niches seemed like scattering my efforts. But reading this forum and elsewhere it appears that sales are created by diversification and the creation of multiple sites. Is that true?

    Justin, Thanks

It's been the fear of jumping into yet another area and not accomplishing anything from my present efforts that's kept me from exploring other niches. Thanks for the advice. Iwill start today.

PS: I took Matt's advice and just posted my latest pending article at EA on my blog.
