Is This Niche Viable?

I'm considering starting a blog on plant-based nutrition. Although I'm passionate and knowledgeable about the topic, I have two concerns:

1. Is the niche too broad?

I would focus mainly on health benefits of plant-based foods, nutritional aspects of eating a plant-based diet, and, possibly, recipes.

2. Is it a buying market?

I understand that the best products, blogs, and website solve a specific problem that people need an urgent answer to. From that perspective, this doesn't fit the bill. I can set up a shop with products like plant-based recipe books, supplements, t-shirts etc. but it bothers me that people who eat a plant-based diet may not need to buy anything. For examples, they can get recipes online.

Any thoughts?

The only way to truly know if a niche is viable and has profit potential is to do the research. No one here is going to do that for you. And, if I were to take the time to do the research and found it to be a good niche then I would probably not tell you and then just do it myself

Al, I asked two specific questions. I'm certainly not expecting anyone to "do the work for me." I have done keyword research and determined there are searchers that want information on the topic. My questions are about whether I should niche it down more. Thanks for your input!

and my answer stands. in order to answer that then you need to research it. Or would you rather every one just say yes or no

Well, i think it's a good one but majority of your visitors won't be buying stuff except if you have something like fertilizer and or the likes..

AdSense will be pretty much better on a blog like that.

Science, Planting and Farming have a good market though the markets may differ but someone interested in farming may want to learn about a new way of planting or doing things.

The term "plant based diet" have over 22,000 monthly local search and a CPC of $1.86.
Use your Keyword Tool to figure out the trend and also get more related terms..

Overall, having an article everybody in your niche love to read will help you build streams of loyal followers.

Good point. That's what I was afraid of. I might have to resort to Adsense to make money.

I think if you narrow it down, then your subject could be profitable. I'm sure I've read info about plant-based diets solving many health problems. One guy I read about has a site called "The Fruitarian", and he describes the regenerative effects of that kind of diet.

When you find some specific health problems that might be solved, then that might be the kind of "urgent problem" that will help with your marketing.

Very helpful. Sounds like I need to focus in on health problems that a plant-based diet can help.

There's plenty of things you can sell, like juicers, hydroponic kits, greenhouse kits, heirloom seeds, etc. Focus on content related to plant-based nutrition that also has products, like how to grow organic tomatoes indoors with hydroponics and lighting kits.

Kurt, interesting. I haven't explored that angle. I've been focus mainly on eating a plant-based diet and the nutritional and health aspects of doing so. Growing plant-based foods is another possible niche. Maybe, how to be self-sufficient on a plant-based diet by growing your own food.

I would start by making a list of every possible related product that has an affiliate program or other way to monetize, such as selling seeds, etc. Then create content and reviews for them.

For example, create an article or YT video about the most important things to consider when making a green house for a small urban yard, then link to the kit(s).

BTW, you can use collections of recipes as a give away to build an email list, then sell related products through your list. You don't have to sell the recipes for them to have value, both to you and to your people.

I just tried a search using this:

    plant diet cured

    - it looks like there might be some potential there. On Google UK, one of the top results is a newspaper article, "A change of diet cured my cancer".

    Kurt beat me to it.

Doing what you described in your first question might be a good way to get people "in the door", but you won't make any real money with a book shop or such.

On the other hand, juicers and related equipment, dehydrators, etc. can sell for enough to put some real jingle in your jeans.

And teaching things like urban farming, organic gardening, etc. are a natural extension of advocating a plant based diet. And the products range from container gardens to small farm equipment, along with greenhouse kits, hydroponic gear, even aeroponics.

As a dedicated omnivore with serious carnivorous leanings, I'm probably not your ideal prospect. But even I can appreciate knowing what's gone into the food I'm eating.

JohnMcCabe, like your product suggestions. I had thought about juicers, blenders, slow cookers etc. but hadn't considered dehydrators. Good one!

do research. if you can survey that audience do so with open ended questions. pick out the problems they have and create solutions around that.

you can create easy and free surveys with google: https://www.google.com/forms

never 'lead' the questions with yes or no answers or fixed answers. ALWAYS OPEN ENDED.

if you can survey them then do information hunting on niche related forums

    rock out and good luck

PS dont forget about good'ol google keyword tool. create content around high search volume terms.

First, if it were me, I would search the web to see if there were any other sites similar to the one you're considering. Then go to Alexadotcom and see how many visitors those sites get. If they get lots of visitors a day, you know there is a market.

Study those sites and see if you could create a better one. Next you need to monetise your site by adding adverts with products relevant to your site. Don't make the mistake that many bloggers do and try to monetise their sites with totally irrelevant products.

Next, you need to get traffic. There are thousands of free and paid ways to get traffic. Try a solo ad, udimidotcom is a site where hundreds of people with a large amount of subscribers will send out your ad. Start with a small amount, something like $25 for 100 clicks. If you can afford an autoresponder to collect email addresses, then you can sell to your subscribers products in your niche.

I would definitely narrow down my niche. There are so many types of plant based diets and foods. Really think about who you want to target.

And yes, this is a buying niche. People want to be healthier. Eating healthy and green and organic is trendy now. You can monetize it with video courses, guides, cheat-sheets, recipes, coaching, etc.

People are extremely interested in their health, this is what you can call a 'Cardinal Niche' - it is like the major heading in a library - but just like in a library you have many sub-headings and a large variety of specializations as represented by the individual 'Books' which might drill very deeply into one aspect of this major topic. so the trick is to present your knowledge and expertise in a highly specialized way. So your plant-based nutrition could be the means for an 'MS sufferer' or an Epileptic to regain their constitutional health . always in business it is the specific which sells, not the generalized-even if that general information is high quality. Best of luck with it-I'm sure you can fashion something specific!

Mr. Fume, love the idea of tailoring the plant-based approach to a specific disease or health problem. That would make it easier to get traffic and I'd be serving a more focused audience. Thanks for your suggestion!
