Music Marketing Online

Hello Guys
I need ideas on how music marketing works. I want to start something that will market locally produced music online, where people's music can also be downloaded free of charge.

ok, so what did you do so far, what sites you are member of?

you know, everyone wants to make it there, and you're not specific so far?

why would i even talk with you, unless of course i'm a humanitarian

So far I have learnt how to develop a website, graphics design, currently learning social marketing and entrepreneurship. You do not have to be a humanitarian to give advice. If I'm not making sense or clear about what I'm asking please tell me what you don't get, so I can correct my mistake.

  • Especially in a niche like music..

..you need to start by thinking about ''monetization''.

How are you going to monetize it, because there are many sites in the music niche that market effectively and get lots of traffic, however they struggle to monetize.

  • There are really two ways to go with music monetization and marketing..

    1. Build a list and offer additional products to the free music. Think like kindle, you can get free stuff however there are extras you can buy.

    2. Advertising like adsense

    Hope this helps

that is pretty decent advise, "think like kindle" and adopt it to music

no difference at all, except music is the higher art because it touches
not only intellect, but also the soul and the senses...

No I'm not a musician but I'm surrounded by musicians who do not have a local platform where they can easily direct their fans. I would like something like /www.datpiff.com/

  • Take an in-depth look at the tools and emerging technologies artists can use to generate interest in their music, acquire new fans, and sell their music online.

So what's the problem? Build something like it.

I would set up a YT channel, and start there.

    Hi OP,
if I understand it right, you want to help local musicians market their music.

    1. Step: Get the music heard, the artists known
    2. Step: Define your audience, create relationship
    3. Step: Market to the people you have established a relationship with

To get the music heard, I'd set up a "homebase" for your artists. A website, a wordpress blog, a facebook fanpage, a google+ page, a soundcloud profile, a bandcamp profile, a ReverbNation profile, a youtube channel
(if you have time, do it all)
where you collect all the music and musicians.
Put a lot of info there too - why you are doing this, why you think the music should be listened to, all about your musicians, even how music is produced or played live in your area (say if you are living in Africa the way music is made and consumed may be very much different from the way music is made and consumed in America) ...
Make all music as accessible as possible! I have sold more music for artists who have their music up for free download than for those that restrict access

    Then start spreading:
First thing that comes to mind is social media. Facebook groups, youtube, twitter, pinterest, google+ groups, ....
web 2.0: free wordpress blog (lots of social activity going on there too), tumblr
dripshare your contents there, interact with others

When you've established a good web presence, start reaching out actively to your audience

I'd start searching the web for relevant music blogs, webzines, webradio and start sending them stuff.
write an email that tells them exactly why you think your music is great for their audience - all these live from great content, and you are giving them some (or so you believe)

With social media there are different techniques to use in different places. You must find out what works for you and what doesn't. I've had great success driving international interest to my local bands from twitter for instance, I have found a lot of readers for my music blog on google+, I get best results for local fans from facebook, I get fast feedback from other musicians from soundcloud and Reverbnation.

The key is to get into conversation with people. Not just blast out some posts or tweets.
You want to establish relationships. There's nothing like a relationship for selling music. FANS! You need devoted fans. And you will only get them by being very accessible, communicative and creative in interacting with them.

Start collecting emails for a mailing list: Noisetrade is a platform where you can offer free music downloads in exchange for an email address, so does bandcamp. Offer one song or an ep or a sampler album .. it's up to you
write some follow up emails for those who download. Use the email list later to sell to them.

Be creative with content you share, do rehearsal videos, live videos, lyric videos, record personal messages of your artists to new fans, pictures, rants, tour diary, studio diary, record the process of a new song creation etc. etc.

Last step is to monetize. You can sell downloads easily from bandcamp, Reverbnation and CD Baby. You can create your own webstore for free with freewebstore.com
Create upsells, like fan packages with autographed CDs, Bandphotos, merch
Don't forget to have active links to your pages in youtube video descriptions, make it easy for people to find all of your content

Hope this helps - it's a lot of work! Try lots of different things, evaluate what works and focus on that

Since you want to market "locally" it will depend on your geographical location. Different countries do things differently. Especially in Africa.

    youtube youtube and more youtube

    and maybe a little soundcloud....

you need to get videos of the band or artist creating music.

have the artist sing on video..

come up with songs on video...

talk about his or her inspirations on videos..

THEN! you check out your retention rate on the analytics back end, if its consistently under 30% then maybe he or she isnt that entertaining

yeah! i would comment on that: i discover all new bands on soundcloud
and re-discover all old stuff on youtube. so both are important.

to promote bands you also need to announce upcoming events and concerts,
new albums etc. for that you need an email list, and a channel.

soundcloud is great for new bands because you can self-promote it and
build a huge download fan club. 1 hit is always free, the others are not.

Well first you should start by building your own site, and promoting it. Then, put it on Createspace to have it listed on Amazon's CD/music section. Also put it on CDBaby. Participate on music forums for your genre (most will offer advertising slots), and make sure you're VERY active on social media.
