Hey Everyone,

What are some ways I can market my self-employed business better online? Is it a good start to have social media accounts which I put daily content on and a website with videos, blogs, pictures, etc?

Thanks,
Nick

Where and what? Is it local or virtual?

My comment was in relation to the post above. The OP was being asked to provide more information about his new business and how to market it online.

My suggestion was to focus in the beginning on adding great content to his web site. I think that's especially important early-on in a new business. When prospects come to visit, you've got to have relevant original content there that will be helpful for the prospect. If you don't have it, it' going to be hard to get repeat visitors.

Not only that, but you want to show off your quality, that you are an expert or authority in the niche, and that you care about "taking care of your website visitors."

I like the analogy that every piece of content you write is like a billboard to your business. You distribute your content in various places online within your niche where your prospects will see it. It will lead them back to your website.

    Maybe.

It depends on what type of business you're in and a couple more variables. Answer Gordon's questions, and people would be able to give you some useful answers.

Yes, and in the meantime, fill your site up with great, original and relevant content that will be of value in the niche.

In your opinion, should content be the main focus and priority?

Recently read a great book called 'Lean Startup' about a powerful concept regarding the balance between product/content creation..

      ..and promotion/launching.

It should be ONE of a number that you focus on. As well as Promoting yourself and your Brand and Positioning yourself . Also on some of the Details you need to learn in creating your own product and being an Online Marketeer in general

  • 'Build it and they will come'

In my online marketing career, since I have started online this is probably been one of my greatest lessons. They don't come, you have to seek out prospects (Advertising) and attract them 'not romantically' to your website :p

Hence, I recommend in order to actually make your business a real business that gives you what you want one must switch to an 'investment mindset'.. (Advertising) asap.

How much advertising and promoting have you done? (Free & Paid)?

Thanks for the helpful advise from y'all. I'm marketing my own real estate business as an agent and consultant. I would like to start off locally. My intentions are to brand myself within a few counties I do work out of and eventually use my e-mail/prospecting database to sell other products. Is that a realistic idea or am I way off with how I'm doing it?

Hi Sensi, this is a really good question. I would suggest you to follow email marketing. Why? First of all it is the most cost effective method of marketing. Second, it is efficient as well as you'll be able to reach your potential customers at a great speed (literally mean it). Sending emails will definitely work for your self-employed business. There are number of email marketing tools present in the market. However, I would recommed you to go hybrid email marketing tool whereby u'll be able to connect your SMTP server with hybrid email marketing tool and start sending out your emails to your subscribers. Also, you'll be able to optimize your own email marketing budget with hybrid email marketing solution.

Wouldn't the most cost-effective method be the one he makes most money in relation to resources he spends?

I am asking because I know people for whom direct mail is the most cost-effective method they have, for others it's adwords, for others it's...

I am asking because I am tired of people making general comments like this and not back them up.

Yes, emails costs next to nothing to send. But how many do you have to send to make a sale? How much went into getting the list?

FB Fanpages are free and pretty good marketing sources, but you need to send some traffic
