Can I do THIS with wordpress?

Can someone with wordpress prowess help me out with this?

I want to use wordpress for a site and have 5-6 static pages (horizontal menu bar) ... and then have the blog as a final tab/menu item.

Also, I don't want the blog visible right away -- I want to get the front end established out before launching the blog portion.

Any tips on the best way to accomplish this? T

Theme recommendations would be appreciated.

Added: I also want the static pages .. to have a right sidebar that will be blank except for an opt-in, and the Blog to have a right sidebar with numerous items.

    Here's how to do it:

    1. Make a page called "Home" with your welcome page in it

    2. Make an empty page called "Blog"

    3. Go to Settings > Reading and select the "Home" page to be your homepage, and the "Blog" page to hold your blog posts.

    4. Install the Exclude Pages plugin if you end up with two Home links in the nav bar, and go into the page named "Home" and exclude it from navigation. Here's the plugin: WordPress › Exclude Pages WordPress Plugins

    And that will do it!

    I use Semiologic Theme For WordPress (not an aff link) and it does wonders. Choose the post you want to use as a opening page and make it sticky. You can then decide how many posts you want shown after the first one.

    Another way to do it is to choose the page you want as the opening page but then post wont show. You can show your categories on a side bar if you want visitors to look at you post. Make sure you activate post count or you can add latest post on the side bar as that will also draw attention.

    With semiologic you have full control on header, left right footer and menus using widgets so I am sure you can get it to work

    Kate, Kezz gave you the skinny on setting up the static pages and menu bar.

    As for the sidebars, you'll need to tweak your template. Create a page template that calls the page sidebar, and let the blog template call the blog sidebar as you normally would.
