ALERT: PayPal Changes

ALERT: If you use PayPal there were changes very recently that could potentially adversely affect your business. PayPal developers (obviously have never run a business) have decided business owners don't need to see canceled subscription orders or see new orders as new orders. I do subscription orders for a backlink service that I have had for the last 10 years and I used to see canceled orders in PayPal and I could tell my backlink builder team to stop the backlinking.

Now I have to rely on an email from PayPal to tell me there was a canceled order and then try and find the order in my database. If a customer has more than one order going on I have to find which one was canceled. I used to be able to pull it up in my database by PayPal ID but the geniuses in PayPal Development decided that there would never be a reason to search for an order by PayPal ID and took that ability out too.

Regarding new orders there used to be two designations when one came in; new order created and the transaction amount. Not anymore. I have to guess which one is a new order.

PayPal will not change anything unless it receives enough complaints. I am calling on everyone who uses PayPal and is impacted by this to go into your account, click More at the top, click on Site Review, click the zero (0), and write how these changes are adversely affecting your business.

I complained in May regarding not being able to search for orders by PayPal ID and there weren't enough complaints. So PayPal never put that ability back.

I have been burned by PayPal in the past for supposedly not following their obscure seller guidelines. I was fortunately given a warning but I know of others you have not fared as good as me.

I will always go with a dedicated merchant account in the future when selling any type of online program/service, and save my Paypal use for making online purchases.

i use paypal now, and I'm happy with them so far..

that being said, i know a lot of people have had terrible experiences with them..

I'm just worried it's going to happen to me someday.

I only use PayPal because of eBay. If eBay ever gets their own payment system again then I'll ditch PayPal entirely.

PayPal wants more users to move up to using automated methods of handling the money side of things. They have had automated systems in place that do everything you could ask for automatically behind the schemes and hands free for over 10 years now.

People who rely on in app notifications to manually handle payments/refunds/cancellations are shooting themselves in the foot these days. Manual processing creates a bottleneck that is quickly becoming unacceptable in this age of instant gratification. Everything is automated now, and if you are serious about running a business, not just having a hobby, then you should be seriously looking at automation in your payment processes.

My experience has been very similar to ForumGuru's

Not quite as long... I think 13-14 years.
My account was frozen once right after I modified my sales page to indicate two-tier commissions. Assuming that (even though it was only 2 tier) Paypal interpreted it as MLM (which is against their terms), I removed any mention of 2-tier commissions from my sales page, phoned Paypal, and was live again almost immediately.

      Well over 10 years.

RAP (my online sales and affiliate management system) uses IPN to capture payment info from Paypal to my database, and the customer isn't delivered to the download page until after the IPN is received from Paypal and additional fraud checks are performed.

It was first launched 9 years ago, and it wasn't the first such system to be launched

I too have had trouble with PayPal in the past.

I agree it is very hard to get through to them and for them to change their ways!

I hope you have success in your complaint..

    All the best.

PayPal is a team of scammers, built for scammers. It sucks that you still have to adapt cause everybody uses PayPal.

PayPal is built to deter scammers and it's only scammers that ever complain about it.

It's quite simply the best payment processor online. If you don't accept PP you are very unlikely to get a purchase from me.

There's been a few complaints about Paypal recently - mostly marketer's accounts being put on hold, although I've also seen stories of people getting the accounts taken off hold again very quickly because they found the right people to talk to.

I'm wondering if there's some new mangement in place who are trying to get noticed.

Allow me to offer my counterpoint.

Fifteen years I have been using paypal to collect funds on my ecom sites - not a single major problem to date. Fifteen years of using paypal for payments...including paypal debit card, paypal smart connect, and paypal extras and I have never had any real issues.

Twice I was ripped off by software pirates and twice by image pirates that I reported to paypal --> all four times paypal covered my purchase.

Same here. Been using them for 8 years to sell and on the average I have 600-1000 transactions per month go through them. I also use their debit card (which is awesome) to purchase groceries and pay other bills and never had any issues there, either.

I had my account frozen once, and it was just a security freeze for my own safety. I called them and they immediately lifted the freeze. They did not give a reason as to why it happened, but I suspect it was because I had been out Christmas shopping at the time and had made 3 large purchases using my business debit at 3 different stores within a 30 minute time period.

They may have thought that my card had been stolen or seen that as abnormal activity on my card. Whatever the case, it was only for my own protection and as I said, I called customer service and got right through and they corrected it on the spot.

Also, one time two charges appeared on my account that I did not make and they immediately removed them from my account and cut me a brand new debit card.

I have zero complaints about them. Whenever I have an issue, instead of making a post on a forum, which will solve absolutely NOTHING and is simply a waste of time, instead I call their customer service line and am always put in touch with the right person who is able to solve my issue within minutes.

In my experience, people that have their accounts closed without warning are usually doing something shady and they rarely ever give you the whole story as to what kind of business they were trying to run.

People have to remember that PP is a business and they are not going to do business with anybody who they see as as risky. If you follow their rules, you should not have any problems.

The main thing is to be available to them (answer your phone or return their call promptly if they call you), when you have an issue don't hesitate to call their customer service, and when they ask something of you such as a form of ID or what have you, get it to them right away.

Also, before you start to sell anything using them, read their TOS and make sure what you are selling is not against the rules.

Do those things and you will have a good business relationship with them.

I use paypal's IPN to manage all order (purchases and cancellation), this change won't affect anything on my end. If you make use of the IPN's you can replicate the functionality you depended on.

Use Paygear and let Chris worry about Paypal!

I have often found that when these sorts of changes occur, it usually infers that we need to change our practices in order to stay relevant. Business that stays stagnate often dies.

I suggest we look into better ways of managing our payment venues which will inevitably mean keeping up with Paypal or finding a service that will do so for us.

I make sooo many e-purchases every single day using Paypal that I would never risk ""selling"" something myself over Paypal. I have simply heard of too many horror stories of merchants having their Paypal accounts shut down for a whole bunch of different reasons.

Paypal, for all it's good and bad is STILL the standard for conducting online business. However, I think that is going to continue to change over time which is a good thing for all involved. Competition is a very good thing and brings out the best in everything. Paypal is changing? Good! let them change, and let the free market decide its fate.

Since you're processing everything manually, try this...
select "Subscription Payments" (rather than "All Transactions") under the "Activity" tab. I think that's pretty close to what you are used to working from.
