How to overcome these 3 strongest obstacles stopping you from starting an online business?

Hi WF community, recently I was wondering why every day, millions of people listen to the perks of being an online entrepreneur (not to mention the tonnes of free information available on how anyone can do it), but still they don't act?

We hear great inspirational stories.........we hear what steps they took, yet most of the people sit idle wondering what should they do next.

Why? This pains me.

I was trying to identify and analyse the most common excuses people make to themselves - the irrational justifications that sit tight between them and their "visioned" online business. Here's what I think are the most common obstacles and how you can kick them in the butt:

1. I don't have time

This is the most common one.

Usually, these people have learned a thing or two about internet from people who work full time. They get so overwhelmed with their macro achievements that they forget the micro steps it took them to reach there.

No one started full time on internet right from the start.

It takes time to build something and then finally taking the "trending" bold step of giving up your 9-5 thingy.

I won't give you old worn out motivational lift offs like "Warren Buffet or Elon Musk has time, why not you?"

The problem is we have allowed so many people and distractions to boss around with our daily routine. We react to them, our time plays in the hands of them. And unless, we claim our time back and understand that only, we and we are the true DIRECTORS of our time, we can't break through the "time dilemma."

"THE DAY YOU DECIDE TO TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR TIME" will be the day you stop complaining about time. Take charge, my dear friend.... Take charge.

One of the notable examples I look upon these days is Bushra Azhar - a true magician with pen. She is a mother of two, started a blog two years back while still working 9-5, left her job a year back just because she was earning enough from launches and blogging, and guess what; she just did a Million dollar launch!

All with two children and a husband to look after!

Ask her how she manages her time and she says "I Just took charge of my time."

2. I don't have any ideas/ or a lot of ideas

Another most common obstacle. Either people have so many ideas or they don't have any.

But all the internet pundits will tell you one thing: You unconsciously have a super power you are not aware of.

And people are carving to learn those super powers from you. Over the years, almost all of us do develop certain skills or knowledge that people are ready to pay for. Whether it's sketching, gaming, social skills, technology craze, computer skills and so on, most of the people are not aware that there are people ready to learn from them.

I liked how Ramit Sethi has addressed this pain so brilliantly. Here are his suggestions on how to identify an idea with-in-you that is both profitable and rewarding:

- Put aside 30 minutes today and 30 minutes tomorrow (two distinct times are important).
-Use pen and paper.
- Write down as many valuable "nuggets" you can think of. These can be:
1. Skills you have developed (e.g writing blogs or emails).
2. Knowledge you have acquired (e.g organic chemistry).
3. Challenges you've overcome (e.g obesity, peptic ulcer disease etc).

At this stage, don't feel shy about the quality of each "nugget." Just write it down plain and simple - at least 20. Remember, what sounds easy to you might be very valuable to someone.

You have 20 ideas. Now, where most people go wrong?

To answer this, let me tell you an interesting story.

Gary Helbert, you know him, right? Our very own price of copywriting. Here is how the story goes:

"One day, during one of his seminars, he asked his students "What's the single most important thing you wish to have if you want to make your restaurant business a success? Some said "prime location". Others said "zero competition". Some said "trained employees". Others said "A large capital." He listened to everyone and agreed with none. When asked about his opinion he said, "I would want a huge crowd of hungry people."

He was so spot on.

The most common mistake we make while deciding on which idea to pursue is IGNORING THE DEMAND.

Well, measuring demand is a separate topic and there are tonnes of threads already on warrior forum that explain the exact procedures you need to determine your product/idea demand.

The bottom line is: You are already carrying a million dollar business within you....The biggest obstacle is to explore it. Is that a difficult job?

3. Why would anyone listen to me?

Here come your fears.

Fear of getting mocked, laughed or being called a "list pimp."

And you talk to yourself wondering "It seems that without proper experience and credentials my business wouldn't seem legitimate to others."

Believe me -- you don't have to be the BEST to start with.

And you can't become THE BEST until you don't start. Because "THE BESTS" have to learn from mistakes.

And so will you.

I have seen copywriters who, before starting, misspelled copywriting with copyrighting. And here they are now, making 5-figure launches (yes, this is Bushra Azhar's story!).

People are craving to listen to you...Take your first step.

These are some of the obstacles which I think are the strongest hindrance between people and their wish to start an online business. I know there are more experienced warriors here who can add more pearls to this thread and make it one heck of a motivation guide for newbies.

Thanks to them in advance!

Good to know that you point out about time. Sometimes, we also have offline job and have millions of excuses to not working online because we dont have time but we need that "working time" to start making money online

Yes Yes yes! It's all about how bad we want it. Founder of instagram, Mike, used to work 9-5 daily for a marketing company and at nights learned how to code. For dreamers, "not finding time" is the lamest excuse I can think of. Thanks for your opinion. Cheers! Junaid

Yep, NONE of us have Time to go back and add that last Line of Copy to their Sales Page or go back and talk to that last potential affiliate for your new product, but it is the ones who push that extra mile and just do it..they are the ones who usually come out ahead.

I now it sounds cliche but it is True

Great thread and would be a fine thread for beginners.

In my opinion, "I don't have time" or any other excuse (unless you work 14+ hour shifts daily or are disabled and constantly in pain) is just a symptom of the backbone of all excuses that are not legitimate: Fear or Not being honest.

    Fear

I used to make up all kinds of bad excuses until I realized the root of them all. Fear of failing and not knowing where to begin and feeling overwhelmed. I didn't want to confront these uncomfortable feelings. It is rather scary to get started and not know if your time or money investment will pay off. It's important to recognize that and feel that intensely. Honor your true feelings and let them stay. Sooner or later, they'll dissipate and you can move on and realize that it's natural and it's worth a shot to try.

Which brings point # 2: Honesty.

Truly ask yourself if you really want to do this. If not, then don't. And when you're ready, then proceed. You'll just end up wasting time and money that could go elsewhere. If you're not excited about what you're doing, you shouldn't do it in my opinion. What's the point of investing time into something you think is boring or hate? When your foot is half way in the door is when the most damage occurs.

Loved it! Great addition. Honestly asking yourself what you truly want is the first vital step. I see here number of new members asking how to start a blog in health niche (although they dont know a thing about health) - just going through the shiny object syndrome. Thanks for the great input!

Maybe the sad truth is, most people looking for an easy way to start an online business are just lazy!

    1. "I don't have time" - This is simply an invalid excuse. What they are saying is "I don't want to make the time." We all have 24 hours in a day. Sure, we might have to give something up to make time for our business, but if can be done if it's a high priority. Give up an hour on social media and an hour of TV a day and you'll have enough time to start an online business.

    2. "I don't have any ideas or / a lot of ideas" - Again, not a good excuse. Find something you are good at or are experienced in. Go to the top competitors in the niche and model their success. Find areas of the niche they aren't covering. Find gaps or holes in the niche products that are readily available. Or simply just do things better, or faster, or more complete, or with better service than your other competitors. Find an angle that you can excel at and brand your business with it.

    3. "Why would anyone listen to me?" - Never a good excuse. People listen to and follow those that they know, like and trust in the niche. They follow those with authority. They buy from those that offer what they are asking for. So develop your own "voice," share things about your life, engage with your prospects, then answer the prospect's question: "what's in it for me." See what is in demand then offer it to the prospects. Your audience will listen to you if you are listening to them and supplying their demand.

How to do this stuff is all over the Internet. It's freely available information. Anyone can do this . . . but yes, it takes some work . . . and that is where many, many people fail - they are not willing to do the work. Lazy is not a pleasant term or label . . . but let's call it like it is.

Hi Steve, great insights as always. Lazy people have all the excuses in life to NOT work. All these obstacles are actually the results of our own laziness - rightly said! Big Thanks for pumping your experience here. Cheers! Junaid

Unless these people are excited that they do not see work the way majority do. I know of a person who works normal 9-5 but he is so comfortable at it that he enjoys it. So maybe part of that majority are forced to work at jobs they hate because that's the only way for them to put food on the table. Maybe those people actually do have what it takes and if they had a job they were okay with and time for themselves, they would take necessary steps to make the time?

Hi, thanks for sharing your opinion. I didn't fully get what you are trying to convey. But I do think that people who are happy with their jobs (like real happy) are less likely to think about starting an online side business. It's usually the problem with their jobs, or the hate, or the low salaries, or unfriendly environment that compel people to look for alternate ways.

However, we can't generalize this. There are people who are happy with their jobs yet they want to leverage their income and lift off their dependency. It's just a difference of mindset - some are happy with their 9-5, others want to break open the cage. Thanks for sharing your insights. cheers!

Right, majority are passive victims that let external circumstances dictate their way of living as they are unaware of what's possible beyond wall of limitations imposed on them. But some of that majority are not willing to make time due to bad decisions they made in the past or trying to put food on the table slaving at 2 jobs. How many of them will make time working in 2 jobs knowing that such sacrifice does not guarantee anything and they would be sacrificing time they would never get back? Try having the required motivation, focus, discipline and remain positive on that bumpy ride being around people who enjoy their life, dissuading you from doing what you believe in as your give everything you have to your business venture. What crazy person would do that? Only someone, who's excited to the point of being obsessed and is willing to die for it.

Starting is only one side of the coin. To keep at it, the mindset is prerequisite and to keep at it in tough times is an ongoing personal development process which will thicken your skin and transform your perception if the world. I know that even having part-time job I would not be able to achieve the level of self-mastery I have managed to have over myself because I paid the cost of opportunity. When SEO was still easy I had all the information but mindset is the missing piece I was missing as I was chasing shiny objects.
