Memebership Site Unsubscribe Issue

OK...Just kicked off my Microcontinuity/Membernaire like site. I am using nanacast to serve up the content. However, I automatically subscribe folks into an email list on aweber when they join. Right now the emails are basically supplemental information to the program. It is not unrelated content, and it is not promotional stuff.

I have had a few folks unsubscribe from my program...What is interesting is that some folks unsubscribe by clicking the unsubscribe link in aweber. This does not automatically unsubscribe you from the membership site. When that happens, I send an email asking them if they really want to unsubscribe from the site, if they say yes, or I don't hear from them, I go ahead and manually unsubscribe them from the membership site.

How does that process sound to you? I was thinking about just dropping the aweber email list and only communicate through the membership site. What do you think of that? I do like the idea of having an email list with all of my subscribers on it though. Maybe it isn't a problem, but I fear that someone might unsubscribe from the email list and want to continue on in the membership site. Has anyone else dealt with this issue?

You really should have a way within your membership area for them to cancel their membership. Unsubscribe (to me) means "don't send me any further information." Cancel means "stop charging me and remove my name from your membership roster."

Good luck on our new venture!

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear...I do have a way to cancel in the membership site...but some folks unsubscribe with aweber...and so I have just been making the assumption that they meant to cancel their membership and didn't know how to...I guess that is my delima...

      I agree with Linda.

Unsubscribe to me means stop sending me e-mails. But, cancel means stop billing me.

There are many people that would love to stay in your membership site they just don't want to get e-mails from you.

So, in my opinion I would not cancel their membership just because they unsubscribe from your mailing list.

If you have an easy way for them to cancel their membership allow them to cancel the membership. If they did not want to stick around they will let you know, trust me.

      Talk soon,

Why not place a standard P.S. in your aweber list emails that states
that unsubscribing from the email list does not cancel their
membership and if they want to cancel their membership then
they must bla, blah, blah ... ?

    Hi Sharma,

I have the same situation ... folks unsubscribe from the email and expect that it will cancel their membership subscription also. I send an email with an explanation of the difference and instructions on how to cancel. The ones who listen to instructions follow that ... the ones who don't pay attention to that and want you to read their mind get billed a few more times until they send a message making it clear what they want.

On my new site, I eliminated the unsubscribe link from the email that parallels their membership. It originally was in there, but when I explained to the few who clicked on it that it contained information on new member benefits and how to access them, they universally opted to have their subscription reactivated. I also explained that they would only get the messages as long as they were a member. They are automatically unsubscribed when the PayPal IPN sends a cancellation message.

After coming to the conclusion that the link was being clicked because the recipients thought it was going to be useless junk, I opted to remove it (I use ARP3 instead of a service) and replaced it with instructions on how to cancel both.

No one seems to be canceling either. That makes me feel good.

All it seemed to take on the new site was explaining in detail what the process was, each time I had an opportunity. Clarity helped.
