Getting Your First Email Subscribers and What to Do with Them

Hey everyone!

I'm pretty new to the whole entrepreneur and blogging scene. And when I was given the opportunity to write an article about what I've learned and done as a newbie blogger, I had to jump at it. I figured it'd be great to share what I have learned so far.

So I wrote this in depth article about getting your first email subscribers and what you should do with them. I cover topics like creating content, content upgrades, traffic generation and of course how you should set up your newsletter. You can read the entire article here, I made it look super nice with images and examples of real life statistics. But I'd like to give you all a better overview of what the article is about, so here it is in short:

Create Epic Content

You could spend countless hours on writing an in depth article, distribute it, promote it, and eventually profit off of it. But there's a few key elements that need to be included in your post.

The problem is, why should someone list to a newbie, when there's a 10+ year experienced blogger saying the opposite? Credibility is obviously a challenge for any new blogger. That's why you should always include influencer quotes.

These quotes do a few things for you:
  1. They add credibility (showing that you've done research)
  2. They provide outreaching opportunities
  3. Add value to your article

Now of course, not everyone learns the same way as others. That's why it's crucial to include high quality visual elements. They could be infographics, screenshots, or just a regular image. Just as long as it helps clarify or support what you're saying, people will more than likely benefit from it.

Create a Content Upgrade

For those of you that don't know, a content upgrade is just a piece of bonus content that people can gain access to in exchange for their email.

These content upgrades are usually specific to each individual blog post, which distinguishes them from sitewide products.

The problem with this is that it requires additional work but shelling out that extra bit of time and effort to create some bonus content is well worth the struggle.

Doing so will increase your conversions, after all, articles with content upgrades still convert at a higher rate than articles with none.

Driving Traffic

Bloggers love high quality traffic. The more it's targeted, the better we understand our audience. Not only that but we'll also be able to write content tailored specifically to those people. So here are a few ways of driving high quality and targeted traffic to your site:
  1. Reach out to influencers
  2. Guest Blogging
  3. Posting to Communities

Each of these is about being exposed to a new and established community. If you've added in influencer quotes to your article, you can reach out to those people to see if they liked your content and maybe they'll share it on twitter or even feature you! Guest blogging does the same thing! You'll be exposed to the blog owners established community, and their list of subscribers.

The Newsletter

Creating a newsletter should be the very first thing you do when setting up a blog. People that enjoy and benefit from your content will subscribe for whatever you're offering. Whether that's just a general newsletter with updates, or a content upgrade. People will sign up if you're providing value.

But it's not always about email those subscribers about a product of yours and trying to sell them a $400 course, it's about engagement. Engagement is what will make you your subscribers love you. They'll trust you as the go-to resource, especially if your content is really high quality.

I really hope this bit of information was able to benefit some of you. Starting a new blog as a business is a pretty intimidating thing to do. At least in my opinion. Anyways, this is just an overview of the information that I have learned from researching and reading articles on how to start a blogging business, gain subscribers, generate traffic, etc.

I'd love any feedback on what you guys think of this process and any tips on how to make it even better!
