Maybe someone can shed some light for me:

You see, I'm big on social networking, and my business partner and I have made a lot of money because of it. The thing is this: I DON'T GET TWITTER!

Or at least, I don't get this:

Everyone is running around following people with the hopes of getting a following back. Is this social networking? Or is it just like joining traffic exchange programs?

I guess I'm just looking for some tips to really use Twitter for social networking because I feel pretty silly going around and following a bunch of random people with hopes that they follow me back. HELP!

You don't follow people randomly; you follow people in, or interested in, your niche.

One way to do this is by using Twitter search to find people discussing your niche.

Once you find people in your niche, you evaluate them to evaluate their followers. If someone is in your niche and discusses it frequently, odds are good that the people following them are also interested in your niche. So, you can follow their followers because that's a targeted audience.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Dan is right on the money. In addition, with Twitter I believe in the long run it is more about quantity than quality. This goes against all my marketing experiences with other marketing arms, but with Twitter... load 'em up!

Quantity over Quality with Twitter? Maybe that is part of the reason why I don't understand it so well. Thanks though Ryan, that does make some sense!

RyanRingold is absolutely right, you need to bulk up your followers as with the system only allowing 140 characters to write a tweet with, it takes time and work to get responses from those followers and with so many having or pushing out so many tweets each, it takes time and a little ingenuity to get noticed.

        Good luck Daniel,

Andy's Twitter tip number 1 - Try to keep your tweets to 120 characters to allow space for people to retweet them.

You don't simply follow random people. You should follow people who have the same interest as your. And starting from there you evaluate their tweets and their followers.

By reading their tweets, somehow you will know what they actually want and might be able to create a product to sell and make some money. Perhaps, if you have 10000 followers with same interest, you can do a survey or research on what these people want the most and from there you act accordingly.

Before you sell anything, please make sure your follower trust you and like you. There is where the social parts come into act. When you have many followers, try to make engage them by giving tips of same interest and build relationship.

For eg, if you and your followers like cooking, you might want to give free recipe tips on cooking etc.

After, the relationship is build, online you try to write ebook regarding special recipe to sell to them. Link them into your sales letter page.

Hope that this will give you some encouragement to start Twitter.

    Have fun exploring Twitter.

I agree with DyLan totally. That seems like the best method of using Twitter to make money.

However, I think you can only follow up to 500 people per day or your account can get deleted by Twitter

Since there's some genuine interest I thought I'd paste some info about this from my new ebook (about to be released) on this very subject:

Finding people to follow you is actually very simple - people will follow you for several reasons:

1 - They found you when searching for something you used to describe yourself.

2 - Someone they were following mentioned or recommended you. This could be a direct recommendation or part of a #followfriday message shared or retweeted.

3 - You were following them and you sent them a message and they saw it and decided to follow you.

4 - You followed them and they had a tool set up to auto follow back when anyone did that.

5 - They're following the people who follow someone else, and you're one of them.

6 - Your tweets have been syndicated and ended up on someone elses website or blog where they were seen and the reader decided to follow you. (many sites aggregate rss feeds that include Twitter messages. Check out sites like Alltop.com and popurls.com to see messages, posts, videos to see niche related trends)

7 - You paid to have your link shown somewhere that caught their eye.
So, as you can see it's pretty easy to end up with someone following you.

So if you're into a particular niche, this is something you can use to your advantage. If you were to find a particular person or company that is very related to your niche - just follow that persons most recent followers (if they recently followed, they're probably currently active).
For same reason as I advised you to get over to Twitdir.com and Twellow.com to register yourself - this is a good time to remind you that others will have done the same, so go there to find relevant people to check out and have follow you.

We'll cover the search features of Twitter in more detail the next chapter, so as we do that you'll not only see how to find followers but since the same thing applies to how others will be finding you, this will give you insight into how to get found by them.

Andy, that was some great info you gave out.

There are so many tools to help build your twitter list it would literally be hard to list them all here, but the old tweetlatter service which is now SocialOomph is a great service for finding like minded people with similar interests too.

You guys have definitely shared some good info on the topic, thank you! I'm still a bit stumped on the reason why Twitter is popular, but I will start following your advice and see where it takes me. I have noticed that if I follow certain individuals that a lot of people start randomly following me back. Is that the #1 way to get more followers or are there easier ways?

The biggest problem with the standard Twitter web application is that you have to keep an eagle eye on your replies and Direct Messages as you only see the main Tweetstream on the screen.

It is also limited in that it only displays about the last 20 tweets, so if you want to see older ones, you have to keep going back pages. So what to do?

Download Tweetdeck from TweetDeck The first thing you will probably notice is that you will need to change the settings as the default is white text on a black screen. Makes it hard to read I've found, but each to their own.

Tweetdeck is brilliant in that it displays the Tweetstream, your replies and your direct messages all on the one screen. The message columns allow for 500 tweets as a default, so scrolling down allows you to go back a fair way or search for tweets you may want to refer back to.

The screen has a continuous right hand scroll, so you can set up different groups and their tweets will appear in that column. You might have a group called best friends and another for gardeners for instance. That way you don't miss important tweets from people who are more important to you than others.

Tweetdeck is probably the most widely used application for Twitter and I would highly recommend it to you. It allows you to reply, sent direct message and retweet by only click a tab.
