Is Alexa rank still relevant?

What do you reckon Warriors?

Personally, because it's so easy to game I can't see how it's still relevant in some niches.. but would like to hear what you guys think.

I'd say it's still relevant but shouldn't be the only way to know a site's ranking.

If you're selling sites, it is still relevant.

If you're buying, not so much (if you know what you're doing)

It is just ONE of many indicators of a site's health.

You're right though, it is very easy to game with botnets and distributed networks. There are even people who sell Alexa manipulation services.

    Hey

It's just a rough indication and yes your right it can get fixed, especially with the amount of alexa bars on some sites.

Personally, if a website is good enough they should not worry about an alexa rank, it's more for just a verification factor if they want to sell their site!

If am buying a site it would still be irrelevant.

I will need to see real facts and stats before subscribing to buying the site.

It's just a useless metrics as far as am concern.

    Has it ever been relevant?

It is a ranking derived from data gathered from websites that display the Alexa toolbar.

Right from the Alexa site: "Alexa's Traffic Ranks are based on the traffic data provided by users in Alexa's global data panel."

How many sites globally use Alexa's data panel? Who knows . . . and they're not saying. A very, very small percentage most likely.

So from the traffic of this tiny percentage, they "guesstimate" what the global traffic numbers might be.

Sorry, but I would never include Alexa ranking as a credible source of information for anything.

Yes back in the 90's we used it as a source for metrics in SEO - back then we didn't have the number of tools that are available today, so Alexa was a first port of call in reverse engineering.

It also provided more information than it does today.

Pretty much yes, shows you exactly if a site is an authority or not, don't listen to the people saying isn't relevant, because it is.

Is your market IM related? If visitors have the Alexa toolbar installed, as Steve mentioned... Maybe...

My markets have mostly been NON IM, so no, it has/had no meaning ;-) And I haven't had the Alexa toolbar installed for at least 5 years...

      What I've noticed is this:

As soon as one of my sites goes into the top 100k sites the amount of advertising offers increase.

And ones in the top 30k - 70k range are bombarded with offers - non stop (mostly junk, low ball offers). The ranking appears to be relevant to advertising agencies. Is there another correlation? I'm having a hard time finding and obvious one, maybe you guys wouldn't.

All of my sites are non IM niches apart from one... (my only IM site doesn't usually make content that's openly available).

It's relevant to people who believe it has some meaning.

    Anyone remember Nielsen ratings?

Another criticism of the measuring system itself is that it fails the most important criterion of a sample: it is not random in the statistical sense of the word. A small fraction of the population is selected and only those that actually accept are used as the sample size.

      Sounds like...Alexa rankings.
Once upon a time both had their uses.. as the landscape has changed I've wondered if anyone still considers it a valuable tool.. Not having needed to worry about SEO for a few years I haven't bothered with it for yonks.

But as an experiment, so I have some real data to work with, the other day I took a dormant domain with no Alexa rank - and without any real promoting, I managed to boost it inside the top million websites single handily, in a few days.

Far too easy to game Alexa. Shame.

I would say Alexa was has never been relevant. I have a website receiving 20 to 30 visits per day that has an Alexa Rank of 45.000 in the world!
There is a little trick on how to increase rank on Alexa and is so easy that anybody can do it. So that is why i don't think is relevant and never was.
