Starting from scratch

Hello ladies and gentlemen.

If you were a 16 year old with a PC, internet, and some basic skills in Adobe Illustrator/Hand Drawing...

What would you do to start earning income online to buy your first car and extra money for stuff you want?

I'm said 16 year olds father. She's homeschooled. I'm a full time employee and a volunteer pastor at a local church and I don't have extra money to buy products for her to learn unfortunately. My time is very limited to help her.

I'm willing to host her a website, and purchase her first domain name to help her out. I would also be willing to help with any website installations that would help her.

What's your advice?

    Hi Solfan,

This is a question many people ask all the time, she can use her skills to advertise on freelance websites such as Fiverr.com and Upwork.com. If she is a good graphic artist / illustrator there is always a demand for good quality and fast turnaround projects. On both sites there is an opportunity to 'upsell' the offering, either by quantity or by speed of delivery. If she is thinking of other ways to earn from an online business, then she will need to be committed, focussed and patient when building her business using free resources.

Most definitely Fiverr.com Gigs. If she can create a design/video or anything that people would appreciate (even a Cat Drawing) then she can become a Fiverr Seller. I would recommend her to be personal in her gig and by that I mean: Upload a profile picture of herself, and also when creating a Gig I would recommend that a video is created with her speaking about what she is doing and why she's doing it, and so on and so forth.

Let her try Fiverr. It doesn't require you to set up a webhost nor get a domain. All you have to do is create a Gig, explain what you are doing, and just pray that things go smoothly once you hit that submit button.

Basically what the other two said.

Encourage her to develop these skills through videos, and tips and tricks on the drawing subject.

Setup an Upwork, Fiverr and freelancer account (it may have to be in your name) and use her skills to earn some money. Initially, try and draw for free or for relatively low prices to build up some feedback (and enhance her skills). After time, bid on projects for real money.

Setting up a blog/website would be a good idea too. Get her involved in forums relating to her niche.

I wish you and your daughter all the best.

In addition to fiverr gigs and upwork outsourcing ideas above, she could put up her own design website. And sell her graphic design skills to people. She could promote herself on facebook, and get her friends to share. School kids and church friends could share on facebook too, promoting her site and services. Lots of people need design help. I'm sure she could make some extra cash helping people out. Better than flipping burgers

She could also use screen capture software and sell video tutorials.

You see the value of purchasing a domain and hosting that's a good first step...

What a great opportunity you are giving your daughter. To help her find her feet and gain experience I would highly recommend suggesting she start with small editing jobs that she can easily do when she has spare time - there are quite a few small jobs on freelancer and sites like fivver - touch ups, edits, removing backgrounds and adding logos/branding for social media post images... simple tasks that won't take time but will build her confidence. If you have internet, the basic tools and email, freelance platforms are a great way for your daughter to build her experience and her savings, so that she can save to learn InDesign or similar. These days working or doing freelance work online is really simple and she can earn some good money while she is studying and sharpening her skill. As an alternative, if your daughter likes writing there are always jobs on the same sites for blogs/articles and other basic content writing that she might be interested in doing if writing is down her alley. Good luck.

Learn about the business and why you make money as a business owner. Supply and demand. Start simple and set up some gigs on fiverr and elance and once you get an idea for your marketplace you can branch off into your own brand if you want.

She can find plenty of work related to her expertise on freelance and upwork. First she has to build up a perfect profile on these sources by bidding on major projects. Don't loose hope when you fail to get high paying jobs in the beginning.Use each and every project to enhance your working profile so that future employers are comfortable enough to give you a shot.It takes time to accomadate yourself with this line of work and requires patience.

    Cheers-James

But don't forget : those sites are big now, so high competition.

She will need to do a lot more "than stated" to get the high rating for later... 100% please the person, give extra stuff or service...

    Go go go...

I would create tons of illustrations and create my own FREE VECTOR ART site

    how do you make money?

    Off your mailing list

People have to join your list to access the free art

    Why will this make money?

Most of the people that need vector art are bloggers or promoters/content marketers

Send them updates of the latest and greatest promo tools at JVzoo and you can make serious money

I run a profitable free woocommerce/wordpress site where i sell downloadable prints in a very specific niche...

I imagine she could do the same thing with her designs.. Target bloggers and webmasters with both free traffic and paid traffic all the while building that list.

with woomcomerce she could easily create exclusive product discounts and freebies to her list...

Just letting you know it works for me..

    Best of luck,

    Hello there,

First off, this is really a great thing for you to do as a father... This is an opportunity for your daughter to grow, work hard and earn money for herself, so that she will know and appreciate the value of it.

Anyway, you can let your daughter start doing freelancing work on Fiverr, Freelance and Upwork. But building a domain for her on where she can showcase her skills would be great as well.

Good luck to you and your daughter. Cheers!

Hey guys and gals. My apologies for not responding sooner. I never got an e-mail letting me know there were replies!

We setup a fiverr account and did some testing on Facebook with her friends. I think it's definitely something that is viable, but she is too busy with schoolwork (both homeschool and college) right now. Hoping to kick something off soon!

Can't wait to get her started in something. Thanks for all your replies!
