Choosing a domain name

Hi Warriors,

Its finally time to choose a domain name. Theres only one other competitor on the web, and they own:
ProductDescription.com
and
ProductDescription.net

Now my question is, is it a bit of a low blow buying ProductDescription.org to use to sell my product? Or should I think up a different domain that isn't exactly like theirs, but mine won't have the best keywords in it.

I was thinking keeping .org, and redirecting it to another main domain, that wont be so similar.

My recommendation would be to register the .org. If the .com and .net are not registered by the actual manufacturer/intellectual property owner, and if those sites are nothing but spam, maybe add another word to set yourself apart, like guide, info, 101, online, etc.

If you're buying the .org of the product name, make sure the website does not look like it actually belongs to the vendor/IPO. Always use the TM symbol and add a footnote (like "Not affiliated with ...") to ensure your site does not get taken down. Some companies are quite proactive when it comes to tracking down misrepresentation.

Edit: Also, don't waste too much time focusing on domains if you're just getting started. I made that mistake.

If you so wish, you can use a dash (-) in between the words. It doesn't really matter much.

Thanks for the comments. I just didn't want the owner of the .com and .net getting angry seeing as we are selling a very similar product.

I beleive a new site MUST have .com ending. When someone first looks at your link (you make it a long phrase like 'bestproductdescription' or 'productdescriptionsecrets', etc.) the ending usually escapes. And what you usually (as a habit) place in the end? - Yep, its 'dot com'
Better try to add some common words to your name like mhartmann advised.

Yes, be careful with trademarks and such. It's better to go with another domain name which still has your keyword on it. You can use 'pre' and 'post' word eg

'buy' + product description
'get'
'purchase'
product description + 'review'
+for you
+special
+offer
+... and hundreds more

You get the idea

There are lot of things to consider before concluding on issues of infringements.

1. Check if the name is a brand
2. have they taken all the other extensions
3. What alternative do you have...

And if its not but the dotcom is already taken, Then
1. Get words around your product
2. It must be short
3. It must be easily remembered and this is why centering your name around your product is one of the best.
4. Can your name be typed on the browser without actually searching for it
5. In all, avoid any other extension. Use .com
