A Year and a soul later, am ready to quit

Today was terrible! I write for a content mill. One, I think, pays marginally better than the others.

Before you say anything. I know. Content mills are slave drivers. But I crank out 500 words per hour there and get $10. Whoop!

That's a whole lot of cash where I comr from. You can live off $10 for a week. Comfortably.

I make an average of $40 daily writing for the mill. Which means on day 3 I've paid my rent. And got something left over for groceries.

So everything was fine and dandy till today. Woke up as usual at 3 am. That's when you get the best gigs. Wrote 6 articles by 9am and went about my day.

Usually I read a bunch of books about computers which I never seem to understand.

Then I decide to check if my articles got approved at around mid day.

All but one were approved.

So I check the editors comments.

Grammatical mistakes was the reason.

Am not a native speaker. Sometimes I slip up. Anyway, I read through the 430 words and find some mistakes which I quickly correct.

I then fire up grammarly and it tells me everything is okay.

Satisfied, I resubmit the work.

Couple of hours later, the editor sends the article back.

Still not up to par with our standards he/she tells me.

With a puzzled look, I read over the article. I find zilch errors.

Am not saying it was perfect. But from my experience writing for these guys, the article was up to standards.

Maybe they forgot to send me the memo.

But since there's little else I can do, I decide to rewrite the piece. That was around 3 in the afternoon.

I sent the new article. At around 6. The rewrite pops up again undet the revisions tab.

Is it April Fools somewhere and these guys are playing tricks on writers? Or has my English comprehension disappeared overnight?

I stare at the screen for a while. Thinking what to do next. If i drop the revision, my ratings plummet and I can kiss that sweet weekly check goodbye.

About 30 minutes later, am working on the revision. This time, am going all out. I read about the topic, which was natural mosquito repellents, for an entire hour and write what I think is a scholarly piece on repelling mosquitos with various ointments. 980 words later, I click submit.

They have to take note of the extra effort, I think to myself.

Not.

20 minutes ago, the editor sent it back.

Reason? Poor content!

I crammed as much info about eucalyptus mosquito repelling powers as I could. I followed the style guide and even threw in a few hundred words for good measure.

Long story short, I want out of content mills.

Can the article writers here guide me on how to get direct clients?

I'd like to think my writing is not all that bad. Although if you notice a few typos on this post know am writing with the bones on my fingers.

If there's a marketer there who wants a bit of help with content, I can help out.

But I need help getting out of this content mill thing.

Thank you all.

Don't take the rejection personally.. or as a criticism of your work.

With some article writing services the client gets sent the article in image format.. this is a bit silly because the client can save the image, reject the article and get another article written.. effectively 2, 3 or however many articles they like, for the price of one.

They run the image through a converter and out pops a fresh article to cut and paste.

      That's horrible!

So rewriting it again might not help? I'll let it drop. Was thinking of redoing it again.

But now I most certainly will NOT redo it.

Might as well try and get IMers here to write for.

      Thank you Meaney

I like writing about tech. Love it actually. And IM. I get most of my materials here ☺. When I really have to, I take on real estate assignments. I never touch anything out if those three.

    Hi there.

First of, I must say that your blog post flows really well and is easy to read. I'm surprised to hear that you aren't a native, this simple thread is much better than any the content of my native friends could every produce. Not to mention your work rate is admirable. I respect it!

Onto your problem. Personally, receiving an edit request for you work can be quite frustrating at times for me. However, my clients are always clear in what they want and I can clean it up very quick and re-submit my work error free.

It seems this is not the case for, while I have never been a part of a content mill, it doesn't seem desirable. If they client gives you no direction or feedback on your work, it's difficult to know what to do next.

I recommend freelance sites. Freelancer and Upwork specifically, oh and a website too.

These sites will take a % of your fees, but once you earn clients here you can re-direct them to your website and setup payments elsewhere. On your site you can charge what you want also.

    Back to the freelance sites.
    - Create an ATTRACTIVE profile for yourself in your niche (content writing)
    - Check out experts profiles in your niche and imitate them. (That's what I done)
    - Add any previous work or a portfolio to your site.

Now, you may not necessarily be getting $10 for 500 words initially, but it is definitely achievable. The general rate for cheaper projects is $1 per 100 words. I recommend you bid on projects as low as this and as high as whatever you wish. 2, 3 or 4 dollars per word...

This is a great way to earn some feedback, and establish yourself as a qualified content writer. Which will in turn, help you land bigger projects.

Don't forget about setting up your own blog/website. There are loads of helpful threads about driving traffic and conversation rates etc. Just have a look.

Good luck and all the best
    -David

Am not sure if I can win the bidding wars going on in UpWork and Freelancer.com.

I don't know how to pitch. But the copywriting forum has tons of resources I can repurpose to win some. I'll give it a try once am confident enough.

But for the blog/website, you read my mind. A pal is helping me out make a smallish website.

Btw, the revision went through. But with a 3 star rating😡

And thank you for your kind words ☺

Keep your head up and listen to the people here. I'm a newbie to all this so can't offer advice but I have used things like fiverr! in the offline world for some illustrations.

Maybe it is just a personality thing but after a I ask a couple of times for revisions (usually it is stated clearly how many revisions are part of the job) I stop asking even if it is not perfect. If I don't get out what I wanted it is often down to me not writing a clear enough brief and/or not picking the right person for the task. (this is with both native and non native english speakers)

Anyway I guess the positive to all this is it might move you in a more lucrative direction and widen your net.

Also I'd add that I too am impressed by your writing and although I am not looking to outsource anything yet it has made me think it is viable whereas previous advice I'd got from podcasts etc. was try and get native english writers (which I assume is more expensive).

I'm sorry you've had to go through this but for some reason, it reminds me of when I hired non-US writers to write some content for me. They didn't understand what I wanted when I asked for revisions...It's really the little things in the tone of the writing.

Reading through your original post, your writing seems to be pretty good. However, I strongly suggest perhaps taking a US based grammar course if content writing is what you will continue to do...even for others here.

Side note: I'm shocked by how affordable your expenses are (and a little jealous, lol)

      Good luck!

I'll make a point of that. When I started out writing, I grabbed a bunch of books. The Elements of Style was one of them. And I read it regularly to freshen up. My English could use some work though.

    Hi G,

To get out of the content mill and into a more sustainable way of living - although the money is OK for where you're living - I'd consider doing these things:

    * Write 2000 words or more daily for yourself, for practice, to improve your writing skills (this is different than writing articles for a content mill; you'll find your voice, get clearer and more confident with your writing and will land clients who'll pay you $50 or $100 per article...or more)

    * get a domain and hosting, start a self-hosted Wordpress blog (brand yourself, gain credibility among higher paying clientele, show off your writing skills)

    * follow successful freelance writers like Elna Cain and Brett Jones. Yes, both are my buddies, but both rock, and will help you grow your own freelance writing business

    * Look for jobs on places like the Pro Blogger job board (some are big ticket, some are small ticket....focus on the big ticket ones)

    * Still there? Keep writing, and writing, and writing, in quiet, to improve your writing skills

I do a bit of freelance writing these days but made some nice coin back in the day, and if I devoted myself solely to freelancing, it'd have been even more (worked many income streams online).

I even ghost wrote an Amazon best selling eBook, generating sweet income as chapters were billed out 1 at a time, so I was paid per word.

Writing daily, learning from successful freelancers how to run a prospering business and building up your blog so some clients come to you are surefire ways to make the leap from content mills to you owning your successful, fun, freeing freelance writing business.

Then you can hire or fire clients based on your preferences, which so rocks versus doing the cyber sweat shop, content mill bit.

    Ryan

PS....You write fabulously. Really. I'd never guess English is your second language. Well done. This alone indicates you can easily make $50 to $100 per 1000 word article. Just keep writing to improve your confidence and to develop the posture to set the rates you're worth.

      That was my point.

However, I think the OP can't help but consider the fact that he USUALLY doesn't have a problem like he did with this one article. Perhaps that's why he's frustrated.

Don't let one person define who you are as a writer. Some people just want to complain about anything. The Gettysburg Address, one of the most famous speeches in American history, got negative reviews. I'm not kidding. Anytime you have a dissatisfied customer I would ask them how they would approach the material. Usually people will calm down when they see you are trying to write 'their' way.
