[QUICK] $100 up for grabs... design an ecover for MinisiteWars

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

Darren and I both agree that the cover that most captures the wars is Pulp Minisites entry... who are the winners of $100

With so many talented entries not making the top spot, we've decided to put the 5 runner up places to public vote... Darren and I have chosen our favourite 10 and are launching a POLL to decide the overall 5 runners up. Will be a new thread, as this one has become quite unwieldy

Here's the voting thread: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ou-decide.html

Good luck everyone, and congratulations to Pulp Minisites.

I hope you've all picked up a few enquiries from potential clients from this thread...

The battle may be over, but the WARS have only just begun.

-------

By the way, Darren won our bout of paper, scissors, stone... with a cheap shot. He made a paper aeroplane and speared me with it from across the room.

======================

A (made up) story...

Darren Kaye, a.k.a GraphicsGenie was in my neck of the woods the other day, wearing a trenchcoat and abusing the locals. I confronted him about his deviant behaviour and he became aggressive. As I'm a rock-hard-kick-ass-ninja-blackbelt, I was able to disarm the situation and at the same time I stole his wallet (for the prizemoney)

As we all know, Warriors are the most talented bunch of homosapiens on the planet and we have a need for the best designers for MinisiteWars 2008.

To help us discover who these designers are, Darren (Baldrick) and I came up with a cunning plan...

How about we put up a competition in the WarriorForum offering $100 for the best designed ecover (chosen by us) for Minisite Wars... WHAT?!?!?! $100 for an ecover? Yes indeedy!!!

The theme/spec:

MiniSiteWars 2008 - An epic battle of graphicial proportions
Two Designers - One Website - One Winner, You!

(many thanks to Peter Bestel for the winning tagline)

The rest is up to you...

If you're good, you may also be contacted by Darren and I about participating in this year's wars.

So, show off your skills - even if you don't win the $100, all these lovely warriors will get to see how awesomely amazing you are and you might get a few new clients out of it. You could also be selected as a combatant in the wars and win a nice big wad of the green stuff in the process.

You can enter as many times as you like...

The competition starts NOW and ends next Sunday...

GOOD LUCK.

Karl.

P.S. Any questions - let me know.

        A (made up) story...

During a trip to the redneck area of Lancashire, namely Morecambe in a search for the mythical beast known only as Karl 'ninja my arse' Warren my wallet was very crudely stolen. It felt like I was been pickpocketed by a dump truck.

Due to this REALLY poor attempt at stealth I decided to throw this dog a bone, a whipped out $100 from my wad and told this overgrown sack of spuds to work on his skills.

Clearly he isnt using the $100 for that... oh well, an ecover for minisite wars was the next best thing...

Good luck on your designs, anything goes, impress and your half way into the competition already, last year our top designer pocketed $2000

This year it could be YOU!

          Darren...

you made me cry... I thought I had uber-super-mega-stealth and you say I'm nothing more than a sack of King Edwards.

I'll have the last laugh when I come to Heckmondwike or should I say, in my best Yorkshire accent: 'ckm'nd'waaaak.

              Hi Earl...

please post a link to it in the thread.

I might ask the winning entry for the PSDs just in case I need to make any minor amendments at the end before we use it on the site.

              Kindest regards,

lol, we've decided not to compete as we're running the compo.

But, everyone knows I'd beat Darren with one graphics tablet tied behind my back - we'll have a design off one day and show the world who the master of the universe is.

Hey Nicholas, do you remember me? We had a chat together
back at a forum called conqueryourniche.com some months ago.
You dished out some tips on graphic designing that i followed
and got awesome results. I can't remember where that link is now
(maybe when i get it, i'll send it to you so you'll be able to recall).

I've updated my portfolio with the new designs i've just created just
as you adviced and you can have a look at it in my sig. below.
Hope to see more of you here.

    Lucy,

On your latest design, this is just me talking to you and not from a judging point of view, but...

...i'm loving the color and feel of this design, personally your front picture, i think needs something else, possibly a tagline font and placement change,

I think if Karl is up for it, we should give our personal thoughts on each entry, been 2 designers held in highish acclaim it might be good for some up and coming designers to get our thoughts and opinions,

    Karl, you up for this?

Yeah fine by me, that way we can push the great designers down a certain path - after all ideally we want to get a design that in essence encapulates the minisite wars concept,

Can I finish off Lucy though....

possibly duplicate the number of gravestones, and put designers names on, you get more of what i was getting at,

I dont want everyone to start doing this, but basically Lucys design led this way to me,

          Personal opinion-

Let people design their covers according to the theme and then select a winner. If you start giving opinions and tell a select few people on what they should do to improve their designs, then it isn't a contest at all I am afraid.

People should be allowed their own creativity. Whether they are good or not.

If you start telling people what "you" think then it's not their design or opinion of their design, now isn't it? You are basically instilling your own ideas into their design. To me that is not what a competition is all about.

There are some really nice submissions in this thread, wow! (and I'm a fussy bunny)

I followed this competition last year and my husband and I purchased quite a few spots, so will definitely be looking into snagging a few this time around as well.

I also think it's great that the two designers running the show aren't competing this year, definitely keeps things on a level playing field and lets you both contribute in a different way.. (Although Darren did a great job with managing it all the last time around.)

It's nice to see this thread in the main area so that it gets the attention it deserves, but when is the actual launch date of the site?

Technically speaking, the "gorgeousness" of Pulp's cover isn't actually on the cover - the design of which is actually pretty lame.

Why not just take a cover and comp it into a screenshot of Call of Duty?

Thomas makes an interesting observation here. Pulp's graphic is undeniably striking as a whole (you only need to look at the number of comments it's drawn to see that), but the ecover itself is, with the exception of the badge, about as basic as it gets.

Part of the trick in creating an ecover is to use the small space available and create something cool within that space. Once you go outside that, well, the sky is the limit. You can have your cover rising out of a mushroom cloud with burning cities and the carnage of war all around it, BUT is that still a cover...or something of a movie poster FOR the cover?

I guess the question is when does an ecover stop being an ecover? There are other clear examples as well on this page.

Just a point to ponder I guess. Not in terms of this competition necessarily, as there's no real product here so there's room to just let your mind wander and go crazy and have fun, but in terms of the work we do everyday for ourselves and mostly for customers who sell specific products. Are ecovers progressing from being realistic physical representations of digital products to being complete little sideshows? Should they?

      Opinions welcome.

Thanks for all the eye candy guys, and good luck to us all

Livingcovers you need to up grade your message editing interface, just click on the CP link at the top and edit options. scroll down to the bottom of the page and change the editor from basic to the full fledged wysiwyg editor.

This will now give you the option of adding images to your postings.

Getting exciting now folks... 2 days til we close the compo and pick the winner.

Darren and I have been talking on Skype and are reserving judgement until the very end. One thing is for sure though:

The wars are going to be massive... I've had loads of emails about how much people are looking forward to them.

Still enough time for anyone who hasn't entered, and also anyone who feels they might need another run at it.

      Good luck boys and girls.

I also hope some of you have picked up a few PMs from potential clients.

So a good design comes down to how much you can fit in a box???

Take away the army men from Pulps contribution and they're still my favourite to win followed extremely closely by Nicolaas Theron.

Take a look at the Google logo, no borders or site colours apart from the logo and they're brand is very powerful.

You don't have to throw in every pic and drop shadow under the sun to make a good cover is all I'm saying.

We aren't talking about good design. We are talking about good ecover design. Which means you also have to keep in mind that the ecover will also be used for promotional reasons and not just at the main website. Meaning promoters, affiliates, etc, etc may be using the ecover all over the place. (Although in this case it might be just at the website in which case one has more creative freedom)

Not many people are going to place huge images that span way too many pixels. So for that reason alone the basic version has to work and make sense. Not to mention still look great when resized.

And btw none of this means that the basic cover has to have every design element on it. It can be as plain as you want. Minimalist works, too

Btw I am loving all this creative work which is quite literally outside the box LOL. So what the heck. This is a design competition so one can go a bit wild ;-)

I don't think the Pulp Minisites cover is basic at all.. The bullet holes, the smoke, the emblem, even the placement of everything.. it's wicked, every bit of it.. Sometimes a box that is slick looks better than one crowded with font, gradients, background images and everything else under the site.. and also looks more professional that over crowded ones.

It's still a tough one to vote on (if it were us customers voting, that is).. Speaking of which, I have to put in an order with one of you before I forget.. if it weren't for this thread I wouldn't have had a clue about how good that particular designer actually was, so regardless who wins, the publicity is obviously working

I think this competition is allowed to take a different stance with any pre-defined ecover ideas. The whole point of this was to allow designers to be as creative as they can, primarily to get the juices flowing for the big competition.

That is exactly what we got so we are happy, plus it gives us some great ideas to use on the main site

          Thanks

Is your mummy the nasty type armed with a cake roller, a limited and slightly repetitive vocabulary and an apron that reads "I can't cook, but I can kick your ass"?

    What a Great Competition !

There are so many awesome design here. Unfortunately many warriors are just concentrating on the theme " Minisite Wars" using soldiers, army etc . But they are not depicting : " An Epic Battle Of GRAPHICAL Proportions".

I can only see a handful of design that has combined a War theme as well showing that it is a about Graphics and designers fighting !

But on a lighter note, you make a fair point. It is true though that abstract concepts like graphics can be very difficult to put into pictures. The best I could do with the time I spent on this was to have soldiers standing in a graphics tablet, and maybe not even everyone "got" it. It's a tough one, especially if you don't have custom drawing skills (and I don't think many of us do, I certainly don't). Sometimes you just can't find the stock images you need to manipulate into the image you have pictured in your mind.
