What to do if you do not "know" your Market ??

8 replies
If you want to sale, persuade, and motivate people you really need to understand them.
Figure out what gives them ulcers.... what really gives them pleasure.

Of course when choosing a Niche you should really consider areas that you may have some experience with and knowledge about.

But it is not always necessary.

I know Dan Kennedy has been highly successful with Markets that he had no clue about.

What did he do ??

Ex. The Realtors Market he went to the Library and looked up several trade Journals and just reviewed them from many year's past. The top journals that many real estate agents read religiously.
He also went as far as taking out a real estate agent to lunches and got in the Mind of him and got to know him real well.

He got to where he start speaking his language like he was a real Estate agent himself. Even tough he had never been involved in Real estate in any way.

He begin to "identify" with them. Which is so important.

So there are ways to utilize that will get you understanding your Market even without any previous knowledge.

And it is important to be able to "know" them so well you almost feel as though you are walking in their shoes .

    Totally agree, in most cases the target market is obvious but people go too broad instead of digging right down to a targeted group of people where conversions will be higher!

    Hi Robert,

    This is excellent advice.

    I base all my blog posts and guest posts on pain points I've spotted from my readers.

    I either ask them what they're struggling with or note interactions/comments on blogs and social media sites.

    If you feel how your readers feel they will feel you and your business site or blog.

    Visualize your perfect customer. Identify their most terrible feeling pain points. See their greatest pleasure.

    What do they fear? What makes them feel good? List each strong emotion. Build your marketing campaign around these pain and pleasure points. You will be stunned at how quickly your audience responds if you see the world through their eyes.

    Look to:

    * Warrior Forum
    * Niche specific Facebook Groups
    * Niche specific G Plus Communities
    * Quora
    * Blog comments
    * Twitter

    for your customer's problems.

    Ask them what they're struggling with. Provide answers - for free - through these channels, and build both free and premium content specifically designed to address these pain and pleasure points.

    If you can tap into their emotions you will have the key to a successful online business.

    How many people here are willing to do the work to involve themselves in learning a niche? Very, very few. Dan Kennedy is an exception for sure.

    I believe you have given some valuable advice . . . but in all reality, most members here can't even be bothered to rewrite PLR into their own voice. Are they really going to go to the lengths of putting in some work to learn a niche when that doesn't directly translate into money being earned?

    I personally believe that it is best for marketers (especially new and inexperienced marketers) to stick with the things they already have an advantage in - things they know and understand.

    There are literally thousands and thousands of niches available to all marketers. Why complicate the choice of which one to attack by choosing an area that is totally foreign to you?

    My advice . . . at least in the beginning of your marketing career . . . is to gravitate to those things where you already have some advantage and expertise. Stick with the things you know and understand.

      What makes people choose niches/markets that they know nothing about?

      The same laziness or impatience that leads them to settle for the most superficial market research. They read somewhere that the most profitable markets are health, wealth and relationships, so they launch yet another site/product on weight loss, making money online or picking up women. A half hour or so on a keyword tool, and their 'research' is done.

      Heck, a lot of them don't even know what their tool of choice is telling them. They find some magic keyword with a ton of searches and 'no competition'. What that tells me is that, despite the number of searches, no one is willing to blow a nickel a click on advertising to those people.

      I've read quite a few books by and about the old-time masters of direct sales and copywriting, and they all followed a process similar to Kennedy's. Before writing the first bullet, they immersed themselves in the market, often for days or weeks. By the time they sat down to write their copy, they actually knew more about the market and the people in it than the people in it.

        Oh - so true! My main niche is in the vaping industry. I vape, therefore I can talk about it, read about it, watch videos about it, etc.

        My second niche is in real estate too, but only because I've been interested in it for decades! "Eventually" hubs and I will get our feet wet, but in the meantime, I blog about it just to stay informed.

        My third niche is the coloring books. And I HATE to color! ROFL But I'm making a few bucks here and there on the books I designed myself and sell on CreateSpace. I have a site set up for it, but don't do a whole lot to promote it.

        All of these niches are far removed (except for the RE) from the mainstream "get rich" niches because I have no interest in the mainstream anyway.

    Yes, your niche audience has a SECRET language that you NEED to learn, or your traffic WILL NOT listen to you..

    I can't stress this enough, I'm a guy in the baby shower niche...

    It took me awhile before I could talk about: gender reveals, diaper cakes, theme prints etc...

    >>> I know those terms might seem alien to you but to the baby shower niche audience, they would have no clue what these terms are: SERPs, CTR, email funnel etc...

    You need to learn that secret language your audience speaks before you can provide value and offers..

      Thanks Ike,
      I love this business. Seeing Marketers getting into Niches that most would not even think about.
      Very insightful. Good stuff !

      In regards to Dan K talking on the subject the best I heard was " It's like you are under their table at dinner time eavesdropping on the conversation"

      As for language and communication it has got faster and faster so it does pay to be in touch with your niche particularly if they are highly socially active because although it may not seem like the "language" changes quickly in reality it does.

      It is different if you are the influencer in the niche or a follower, , , or a marketer observing and trying to insert an offer.

      Best regards,

      Ozi
