Newbie ambitious to start her own online Magazine, doesn't know where to start?

I have a niche - a regional-interest/news magazine with a focus on the stories of the males who reside in the region.

I'm looking for tips how to build an audience or more so define my audience.

    What exactly are you asking? In most cases, both developing content and a marketing plan are necessary. You develop content, as part of and because of your marketing plan.

    Maybe if you clarify your question a little someone will be able to help better.

    First up: welcome to WF. Second up! Magazine. As a few folks on WF know, I'm somewhat partial to online magazines, having thrown together more than my fair share over the years. Lately, the primary focus of my own ventures has been niche viral content websites, where I'm not competing with the likes of Viral Nova and Buzz Feed, but instead delivering sharable media (with, yes, a healthy dollup of clickbait) in the direction of more well-defined target audiences. Anyway - onto your questions.

    Building an audience is easy. I will need some further clarification on the second part, though: "define my audience." By this, are you asking how to locate them online, or instead, is it more a question about who they actually are? Hurl some more details my way.

      Perfect. Well, both questions are exactly what I meant. I know that one of the factors of succeeding is knowing your audience but my main concern is how do I develop my content and get a sense of my targeted audience

        Pretty easy. You need to examine the competition and also the locations where your audience hangs their virtual hat, all with a view to not only knowing what your audience wants, which is the easy part, but primarily knowing how much your audience wants certain types of content (which takes us into the realm of social and viral marketing).

        As an example, imagine I setup a humour page on Facebook in the coffee niche (hey, weirder things have happened). I want to deliver coffee humour to my audience and, whilst I'm doing that, engage in just the right amount of affiliate promotion: coffee, coffee accessories, coffee-themed t-shirts, and so forth. Question is, what content do I provide?

        Solution, in this example: pretty simple. I tab-open a handful of popular pages in the very same niche (in reality, though, I expect we'd find a shortage) and I begin examining engagement levels on all of their posts, looking in particular for high-share posts, since high shares are a strong indication that the target audience finds value in those posts.

        What next? Emulation. Not copying (big difference) but studying the high-share media and coming to various conclusions about why certain media received high shares as opposed to others. And, the more I study, and the more I emulate, the more I begin to understand my audience: what they want, how they react to various media.

        That's one simple example that you can get started on right away, without having to purchase software or spend time learning some more weighty methods. You can use it in most cases to get a handle on your audience. It's one of the tricks we use in viral marketing to get media to go viral.
