Need for SMS applications?

I've decided to work on an SMS related application. Is there a need or use for this in IM anymore? Automation, auto-replies, etc. I'd love some feedback on this.

I think all social media go mobile right now. SMS app goes to the second alternative in case the first doesn't work. So take that fact to your consideration. Thanks.

Do you think retail brick and mortar stores would benefit from SMS capabilities?

        Short answer - yes...

        but it's complicated.
My bank sends me SMS notifications when I make a deposit, and when my larger checks clear. I can request my latest account activity, or my current balance.

My pharmacy sends me SMS notifications when my prescriptions are ready for pickup (even the Walmart pharmacy does this), so I can drop off a prescription and shop for other items while I wait.

Local bars and restaurants have used SMS with some measure of success, but the market demand for this doesn't seem to have taken off as anticipated.

Do those businesses benefit? I think, yes - but primarily in the form of customer appreciation.
I think, for the most part, SMS represents a cost to brick and mortar business, but it's a cost that helps them reinforce their brand and enhance other (paid) services. In marketing... it's their "bonus".

Sid has mentioned some of the stuff brick and mortars are doing that is beneficial...

Personally --> I got text spammed to death by a local pizza shop and now I don't buy Pizzas from them. Bad implementation by them, IMO. A few occasional messages is one thing but these guys were killing me almost daily.

About the only sms notifications I jump on these days are pre-sale offers for concert tickets and reminder messages that an event is coming up at whatever venue. The only real solid exception that I can think of beyond those is text messages from shippers like USPS and the like documenting depot stops and delivery.

        Cheers
