Experience running your own Affiliate Program?

I'm investigating running my own affiliate program.

One of the issues I'm running in to is the capturing of social security numbers. In the United States a company is required to issue a 1099 for any affiliate who earns more than $600 a year. To do this I would need their social security number. I worry about storing social security numbers and the potential liability if someone hacked the website and got a hold of them.

I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience w/ this and how they handled the issue of collecting social security numbers.

A good question you've asked, and it is one reason why it might be better to start with an established way to gain affiliates (JV Zoo, Clickbank, etc.) than to set up your own program.

You are at the end of the good old days, and in the beginning of closer scrutiny of affiliate programs...the USA IRS leading the way to capture some of the billions of dollars in the underground economy.

So it is a good question. Even the most secure banks, and big name guys have had compromises with their data, often including SS numbers and bank accts.

What do you think is the biggest benefit you will gain from doing it yourself?

Not knowing any details, I'd encourage you to do a side by side comparison and see if there might be a better way to go about this.
