Do you really need affiliates for your offer?

Hello all...

After communicating with prospective affiliates regarding some offers of mine, I'm convinced that spending time courting and / or soliciting affiliate alliances can be a sever waste of time if you have quality products to offer.

All affiliates who have reached out to me have shared one or more (mostly all) of the following things in common.
  1. They have been prepared with precise proposals on how I'd be doing things their way. I honestly thought and expected a "hey, let me review your product, and if I like I will promote to my list of XYZ people..." Instead, they've come with; "ok we're going to turn this product into a bonus of this product with a backend offer to another product and hook it in with a side end bonus... then we're going to do a training site and split the funds... and we're going to do this by next Thursday because.... " {that brings me to point #2} What?
  2. They have the most spectacular lifestyles straight out of Lifestyles of the rich and famous. I have had 3 affiliates go out of their way to insert their travel itineraries into every message they've sent me. Italy, villas, resorts, etc. It's to a point where I feel badly for them. At first I thought they thought I was a fool, but I have come to realize they cannot help themselves.
They're always "doing you a favor." They're never in it for the money. They're in it to do you some sort of favor to "build your list."

What's been you guys' experience with affiliates? Maybe it's just me, but I've decided to stay away from them. Very very far away from.

Well I do have ONE condition... If they have bought my product and implemented it and then reported their experience in their initial outreach, then yes, they might be worth dealing with. Other than that, no no no no.

What are your your thoughts?

This will be a brief reply. I'm far too important for forums, but I'll do you a favour whilst my private Airbus A380 is getting refueled (just off to Brazil to grab a coffee). Consider yourself lucky; furthermore, if you'd like to screen capture this post and frame it above your bed, be my guest.

The affiliate system works. It works for pipsqueak marketers selling 3 glorious pages of "How to Turn Your Pet Sheep Into A Thriving CASH COW!" just as much as it works for major corporations like Lucas Film and Disney. Trouble is, like most things, it only works if you know how to make it work.

We have a saying in the UK: pillock. Loosely translated, it means "a stupid person." Sounds to me that you've encountered a bunch of pillocks. Question is, can you benefit from the experience? I think - yes, most likely, yes, you can. Pillocks they may be, but they may also be an indication of something.

Before you can take a product or service to the affiliate market, you need to ensure you have not only something they can work with, but also (to support that) something (an affiliate program) that can help them. Help them earn money. Help them trust you enough to even bother trying.

What I'd do is chat to a whale, a whale in your niche. A whale? Someone capable of sending volume. Just be straight with him. Tell him your intention to have affiliates and ask what it would take to land him. You'll learn more from that experience than anywhere else.

And why? Because he (or she!) knows precisely what he needs to earn from you, and because he deals in big numbers, those needs mean a lot to him. He goes to sleep thinking about them. Dreams about them. And if you can make him happy, you likely have a decent setup.

Last bit of advice (plane's refuelled and a certain celebrity with a rather big bottom, Kim, or as I like to call her "Waitress," is waving me over): I wouldn't open yourself up to just any old affiliate. If you can, work with a select number whom you trust. Less hassle. And, trust me, a single whale can send as much as 10,000 regular affiliates.

    Tchau!

    - Tom

    im debating this myself

..... i sell downloadable prints for about $10 a pop..

I sell a lot but i doubt affiliates would want to sell my prints for such a low commission..

I could install an affiliate plugin like:

    https://affiliatewp.com/

and test, but I haven't gotten around to it..

    ...you think i should?

I agree with Tom Addams...choose quality over quantity when recruiting affiliates.

Using affiliates to sell your products works very well IF you have relationships with affiliates in your niche.

Most of the time spent with affiliates is not about your offer. It is about building relationships. This happens at events, by promoting for them first, reaching out on different media before you ask for the business etc. etc. etc.

It's not hard to gain good affiliates If you're using JVZoo and you have a decent product and promote it right you will get affiliates that are interested in promoting your stuff.

One word of advice though if you go that route. You going to want to fork over a nice money prize to attract the BIG FISH affiliates to really do you some good.

So I would say at least $2k-3k as prize money would be a good start.

Get on muncheye dot com with your product, because this is the main place the BIG FISH hang out looking for new stuff to promote.

    Good luck

    This is a fascinating thread...

Anyway, I get your point. It's just unfortunate that you have encountered with these kinds of affiliate marketers. But buddy, there are really good ones out there. It may take time for you to trust an affiliate marketer again, but if you do, show him something about your product that can be of value to both of you.

Well, good luck and wishing you success!
