Take them down or leave them up?

I have several hundred articles at a major ezine article site that link back to my websites. Some of the websites are no longer active. Should I change the links in the articles to one of my active sites in the same niche, remove the link, or just leave it pointing to the defunct site?

Given those three options, I'd go for changing the links to a live site.

A sudden burst of several hundred links at once might put your site on the Google naughty list...

But that depends on the niche too, Google is hyper sensitive to IM related topics.

Like John, I'd also point them to my site..

    I'd do it slowly.

I'd also change the links to an active site, but do it slowly and pace yourself.

It depends if your new website is relevant to your past website. Yeah, you could change your dead link to your current site but if the traffic you get from it isn't targeted it's a waste of time.

Depends on the relevancy but if you did the hard work, why waste it? Point the at your own sites bit by bit.

yep, if you change them, slowly, not all at once. that would be dangerous and your site
can drop suddenly. been there, done that. just deactivate the dead/not functioning ones.
