What's the best screen recorder?

I want to record a part of my screen and I used Snagit in the past but it's too pricey. Anyone know any open source alternative screen recorder programs?

    Screen-o-mattic works pretty well!

They have multiple options to play with. They also have both a free and paid version. The paid is a very low price and is worth it.

I've tried pretty much all of them.

Screenflow is the best, but only for Mac.

Camtasia is the best for PC.

And Screencast-O-Matic is a decent alternative if you can't afford Camtasia.

CamStudio is OK if you can't afford Screencast-O-Matic.

I don't know what I would do without snagit...it is my most tool (use it multiple times each day) in my toolbox. I would probably go for camtasia if snagit was not within my reach. However I would do what I could (knowing what I know about snagit) so that I could purchase ($49) snagit.

I originally bought the entire video editing suite and I was surprised to see it came with as many apps as it did.

Also, it was relatively inexpensive. I bought it approximately 2 years ago and I think I paid $67 for the whole video editing package, which included:

      - Video editor (somewhat similar to Windows Live Movie Maker but more functions)
      - Screen capture/recorder software
      - Video conversion app
      - Webcam/outside camera recorder software

I just took a look at their website and it looks like the latest video suite is going for $79.95, which I think is a steal. I might actually upgrade since they have added a lot more features since the version I'm using.

Another software I use is a good free one called VSDC. They have an upgrade which is something like $19.95 for a one-year PRO license. I looked around and found a coupon code and got 30% off of that so I think it cost me like $15 or $16 or so for the year.

The video editor is awesome and can do just about anything a lot of the really sophisticated and expensive programs can do. It also has a screen recording suite that is really pretty good.

I believe the free version would be fine, but for $20 you can unlock all of the features. I edit all of my chroma key/green screen videos using that editor because it has more settings for chroma key than most free editors.

You can grab the free version here:

      http://www.videosoftdev.com/

Here is the link if you are just interested in the free screen recorder:

      http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-screen-recorder

If you want to upgrade I believe it is done from right inside the software. Again, not necessary but if you do a lot with video it would be great for you.

On a PC, Camtasia Studio (currently) gets my vote. 30 day free trial is worth taking up - the price tag at the other end will be prohibitive to some, but definitely worth trying out during the trial period. I like using things that are intuitive so my measure of whether something is well set up is whether I have to turn to a manual to get anything done. Obviously you miss certain technical things by skipping that step, but you can get up and running without reading documentation/manuals with Camtasia Studio. Whether you should purchase it or not after the trial purely comes down to your budget.

I also had been looking at options. I had recently downloaded iSpring Free Cam - https://www.ispringsolutions.com/ispring-free-cam . I like the simplicity of it - easy to use (also free).

I wouldn't recommend Camstudio as now they've added all types of nasty adware (malware). I tried to download it at sourcefourge thinking it would be safer but it didn't download all the necessary files. Icecream Screen Recorder I see has some good reviews & may give that a try.

I use the secret one built into Windows 10 (Windows key + G). It's meant for gamers, but it will record any other apps.

Plusses: genuinely free, not "free" as in not free like so many of the others. Also the only one I've got to work on my 4K screen. Absolutely nothing else would work!!!

Minuses: won't let you swap between apps, but you can splice videos together later. Also it sometimes forgets to start recording audio.

In summary: a good choice if you want some basic screen recording but usually shoot videos on location.

Recording the video screen is a useful solution for your tutorials, for a webinar, for an important presentation. I want to share some software's name that I used in past.

Here is a list of best free video screen recording software:

    · Capture Fox
    · Screenshot with Icecream Screen
    · Jing
    · Cockos
    · oRipa Recorder and etc.
    · CamStudio
    · Quicktime

These are the tools I use to capture the desktop, to create useful videos to explain what happens on the screen of my Mac but also for PC / Windows.

In my case I use both Camtasia and Screencastomatic. The last one is cheaper. The quality of the recordings is somehow better on Camtasia.

Now, the visual part is important, but the audio is even more important. I have been using a Samson meteor microphone, but wasn't to happy with the results...., so I went and purchased a Blue Yeti..., Lets see how it works out (still waiting for the delivery guy to appear at my doorstep).

    I'm with the screencast-o-matic mob.

Been using it a few years now and it is great for simple-minded folk (i.e. me) who don't like a lot of bells and whistles.

And I think that if you can get a couple of people to sign up using your link, you get it for free.

I had used Camtasia for a long time, but after getting Snagit I left all other screen recorder. It's simple, easy to use but very effective.

I use screencast-o-matic and I am quite happy with that.

There are many open source screen recorders on the market. Debut video capture, I think, is the best one. It is a combination of webcam software and a screen recorder. It supports to record audio or video alone as well as video and audio simultaneously, which is most useful when you are recording gameplay or tutorial videos for Youtube. Please check this article to know more details of Debut video capture.

    I personally use Snag-It and ScreenCast-O-Matic.

Truth be told, I'm finding a lot of what I do for the annual price of Snag-It, could be done with Screen-Cast-O-Matic for less than half the cost annually. But, I'm still a fan of both

I think the best one is probably Snagit. There is also another one pretty cool called Screencastify which is a Chrome extension and another one i like called Loom.

For quick screen capture + audio + face recording you can try loom.com (I recently found out about it) - it's a free chrome extension

For longer, such as for tutorials - I use Screenflow for MAC and Camtasia for Windows.
