Do you use a Mac?

I'm very much not a Mac user. But I do know that they now come with Bootcamp, the ability to dual boot your Mac with Windows. If you weren't opposed to using Windows just for certain programs, that could be a great option!

I run Linux on all my computers. I have noticed that a lot of the new software written for IM is written in JAVA which is cross compatible with all systems.

I use RankTracker and Market Samurai witch are both written in JAVA and will work on a Mac too.

I am not a Mac user, however I have been doing the debate internally on whether or not to go Mac. I used a colleagues Mac for the day recently, and it was definitely a bit of a culture shock for me. I've heard many good things about Mac's, I just know if I can give up my inside-out knowledge to the PC.

Actually MS is written using Adobe Flex and then packaged using Adobe AIR which offers cross platform capability. SEO Powersuite is written in Java but not that many apps are written using it for GUIs anymore, you get an app which doesnt look native on any platform.

That used to be the case but the gap has narrowed somewhat. For most PC apps there is a Mac equivalent and for when there isnt you can either dual-boot using bootcamp or go virtual machine via Parallels or VMWare Fusion.

CyberDuck for FTP
Box Shot 3D for ebook covers
Adwords Editor for PPC (yep there is a Mac version)
iSkysoft video converter for various format conversions
Komodo Edit for html/js editing
Mozy for online backup
Seashore for basic image editing

And when I have to drop to windows (XP) I use VMWare fusion and run
VS 2005
SQL Server 2005
Delphi 7

Mac computer to me means low maintenance computer.

I only use mac for video production browsing and gaming. Most my work is done on a pc. But a good mac tool for video is called screen flow

I have both Mac and PC computers but just installed a program for Macs called Parallels. It makes your Mac operate just like a PC at your command. It allows you to install a Windows OS and install and run ALL PC software when in PC mode.

Best of both worlds if you are leaning to one product or the other!

Have both, but use Mac 99% of the time. Never had any issues with not being able to do something IM related. Sure, a few of the "gimmick" programs won't work, but that's not a real business anyway...

I'm a pretty big Mac fan. And as others have mentioned, if you need something that is Windows only, there are multiple ways to run Windows on your Mac. From what I've seen, most of the legitimate IM stuff is Mac OSX compatible or has a close alternative that is. I haven't had to dirty up my precious macbook pro with Vista yet! (I kid, I kid! Different tools for different tasks and mindsets. Both are great.)

Another mac user here. I have not had the need to install Windows yet, but if I do I will probably go with VMware Fusion. I have heard nothing but great praise for it.

I'm going to hold out for as long as I can, but the option is there for us mac (intel-based) users.

I've been using a mac for about ten years now, and fortunately with the rise of the iPod and iPhone, I have had to do less and less mac/apple defense.

Using a mac is just a great experience IMHO. I put it up there with high-speed internet, Netflix, and DVRs as far as life-improving things

I have been researching mac's for a bit now and keep getting great feedback from mac users and understand that you can run windows on a mac now so there goes the issue of some software not being compatable.

I was also told that macs can't get viruses, trojons or worms. If you run windows, does this open up the ability to get any of these?

It would only affect the Windows part of your computer, it wouldn't be able to jump across to the Mac side.

They can, but they often don't. You still have to exercise caution. Most malware writers target Windows because of the larger market share. That doesn't mean, though, that Macs are invulnerable.

I prefer Mac for startup time alone. I can start the computer and browse the web in less than a minute. Simply not possible on a PC.

I'm a mac man here... I use it for everything, design, browsing, writing, etc. The only drawback like you said is that you may come across programs that are only windows compatible... Solution? Parallels.

LOL, I've even got the little apple stickers you get when you purchase an Apple product and put it on my car... but my car's a sh*tter anyway so it doesn't matter if a hardcore PC ninja decided to key it one day lol.

For someone who spends a whole lot of time on the computer, using a Mac is truly a treat. I switched to a mac almost a year ago, and from day one I knew I could never go back. Everything runs exactly like it should, every time. No lockups, no lagging, no problems. Plus I have a 24" imac and the screen is a beauty. I'm a designer, so a mac is a better option for that too. I do keep my dell laptop around though, because there's some software that's only available for pc. But as far as my work goes, I could never go back to working on a pc. Using my 1 year old dell just feels like a huge piece of crap compared to my macs. People who say mac's are crap, or they don't live up to the hype, have probably not used one for an extended period of time.

I use both, the Mac as my backup and Windows as my main computer.

Though, after the second virus attack on Windows XP recently I decided to regularly back up everything on the Mac. Haven't had any problems or viruses attacking with my Mac in all my years using it. I'm tempted to use the Mac as my main business computer as it's so stable.

I helped a girl set one up a few weeks ago. The lack of the optical drive was a real headache so be sure to get an external one. Installing software over the network was an incredibly painful process which turned into a day long adventure. Once all of her software (including Fusion and Windows) was loaded, it was a pleasure to use.

Mate, I'm on the new 24" Intel Dual Core iMac. Expensive but Brilliant. I don't know what the guy up top is on about - you don't need to set anything up - it does it all for you and you're up and running in minutes. Super fast too.

Yipes... that makes my PC 172 years old LOL... positively Jurassic <rolling eyes>... I'm still on SD RAM. I have 384mb RAM. Why such a strange amount you ask??? Mine came with 128mb and my partners had 256. We replaced my partners machine after SD ram was no longer available and transferred the RAM to my Machine. I seriously need to upgrade though, whenever I run graphics programs like Web Graphics Creator or Artisteer (Worpress theme generator) they eat up my RAM like you wouldn't believe. My computer lags and freezes, windows just disappear of the status bar, I run out of virtual memory.... sheesh, what a headache!

And yeah, I'm another one that wants to upgrade to a MAC. I've heard great things about them. But I'd probably still keep my PC to run some programs I've purchased online.

Been a Mac only guy for many years. Have many of em, even the 1st version of the Mac Mini.

I do keep an old Window laptop that I got for a couple hundred just in case. But I rarely turn it on.

Market Samurai works on a Mac via Adobe Air. Cool stuff.

Bootcamp or any of the other programs such as Parallels or Vitrtual Box that allow you to run windows in tandem on your mac are good PROVIDED you actually have a copy of windows to install

Not a bad idea. Of the sites I've done with your method the hand built are currently doing better then the XSP ones. I also enjoy using php includes in them then I can rotate ads, header content, menu content quickly site wide without having to touch each page. XSP can do some of that, but the adsense ads themselves have to be changed per page if you just used the XSP method.

Of course DW will not be as fast as XSP, initially or maybe ever, there is more power there. That and I keep thinking XSP is a strike against me in the eyes of the SE's simply because it is used in so many low quality sites. (not the fault of the tool at all) I just don't want to be the baby thrown out with the bath water.

Oh, and I do use XP on Fusion and have the Windows7 demo. I just end up liking Windows less and less and at work I have had a Mac for 6 + months as my primary computer, it's becoming home more and more and Windows seems like Bizzaro world from the Superman series.

I actually hate opening up windows now that I have bonded with my Mac.

I'm going to move everything over and soon quit any programs that need
windows.

Unfortunately some business will be lost for tools I've used for a while
now (keyword tools, Xsitepro) but it's evolution and I want to use my
Mac exclusively instead of booting up windows in it.

Hard to explain this to non-Mac users, but you know what I mean.

We develop iphone apps and run an iphone development course online (EDUmobile.ORG - iphone course) ... and we had to buy macs in order to develop iphone apps and offer the course. Its been a long while now since we purchased macs, and i can see why apple requires macs for all developers! They are way ahead of the game ... desktops, laptops, cellphones and also tablets pcs that will be coming out pretty soon!

Imovie and final cut for video edits
Snapz Pro for video screen capture
Filemaker pro for everything I automate
Automator for the rest of my automation
Opera for my browser
Transmit for FTP
Omni Graffle for my flow charts and mind maps.
Comic life for cool graphics and photo payouts
Art Text for cool web 2.0 style buttons and graphics
Things for my todo list.

I am working on reviewing mac speech for dictation. I need to decide if I should make that leap.

I agree, once you have mac you never go back. I 'converted' 5 years ago and try and convert as many people as I can !

One other great piece of software I use is Devon Think Pro, great database that works great with my Fujitsu ScanSnap

I love my 15" MacBookPro! This baby was expensive as hell, it is just a toy and a pleasure to use all day. I still use my gateway lappy as well, but it will never compare with my mac!

I'd recommend going out and buying a PC, because you're not a frustrating time. If you're trying to only work off of the Mac

With more and more apps being developed in Adobe Air I think the distinctions between Macs and PCs will disappear for IMers.

I have both and use my PC mostly for playing online poker LoL. The only PC tool that I would really miss if I chucked the windows machine through the window would be speed ppc. However the single most important app for me (well most profitable) has to be Market Samurai which is fantastic Air App.

Any IM developers reading this thread please please please use Adobe Air - it's a dream from a user's point of view.

If you own a Mac and need to use PC-only applications, bootcamping Windows is definitely a viable solution.

I'm actually typing this post on a Mac Mini, running the RTM build of Windows 7 fresh from TechNet. To answer the question in the topic title, I do use the Mac in the house, though my personal machine is a PC. I review hardware products, game, and am a PC enthusiast, so a Mac isn't just for me, though I have nothing against them.

The first thing that crashed on my Mac computer was Microsoft Office for Mac. Unlike a PC all I had to do was force quit the program, not reboot my computer.

I prefer openoffice.org - have been using it for PC for years instead of Office, and now that I have a Mac, I'm still using it.

I could easily fork over the money to buy Office, but I've just gotten so comfortable that I highly recommend it to anyone instead of Office.
