Moving website between hosting account

Hey guys,

One of my client wants me to move one of his website from other accounts to his account on same hosting platform i.e. godady.

Means... i have to move website hosting on godaddy from one account to other.
Its not big thing as i used to work on my websites myself and can explore and do things.

How much time usually it takes? and major question is how much should i charge him for this task? lets say website is wordpress with database.

What is the time and price i should give to client for this? He might approach me for more website tasks in future as well.

Please advice.

Thanks

There are several Godaddy tutorials to do it.
If you are using wordpress this are some plugins that can help you do that.

    Bckupbuddy

    Vaultpress

    Updraft

If your client is probably going to order some other sevices from you, you might want to do this for free if the site is not too big.
Is easy and doesn't take much time.
On Fiverr people usually charge 1 or 2 gigs to do a migration, so...
This is a good technique to became "friend" with your client and gain trust.

It shouldn't take that long. But in reality it is going to depend on how large and complex the site setup is. A larger site is going to take more time to backup and then transfer compared to a fresh install.

I can't help you on pricing though, that is down to you and the client .

I used to do it the manual way, moving Wordpress site from one hosting to another and it was a pain in the b***. If I can recall correctly it took about 1-2 hours (depending on the file size to transfer).

Some hosting company can do it for free while some impose some charges.

Since many years back, I use Wptwin Plugin to do it and it is very simple and the whole process is absolutely a breeze. Depending on file size, transferring a WP site just took me 3 mins the most. I started using it a few years back and continue to use it until these days.

Unless GoDaddy has changed from their archaic and stupid alternative to cPanel, I wouldn't do it for any amount of money!

Bur seriously, you can get this done for $5 - $10 on fiverr all day long. I don't think I would do it for free unless there is a very good chance you will get more business from the client.

You say this is a client of yours and then you say you might get more website related business in the future, so it's hard to tell what your relationship is with them. You deserve to be paid for your time and effort but you have to judge the situation based on your relationship with the client, their level of sophistication in comparing your price/service online, and how much your time and expertise is worth to you.

It's easy if you have the right plugin that works. You should try the whole process first before charging to see if for yourself.

For me All-In-One WP Migration plugin is the best and easiest to use. Backup using the plugin, then just go to the new account, add addon domain, install wordpress from cpanel, install plugin and restore.

If it's just a Wordpress site plus database it could take just minutes IF the database is small and you have fast access to the hosting.... The thing is that you will have to update DNS settings for the domain and that could take up to 48 hours to propagate, so you may have some traffic sent to the old server while some traffic sent to the new server until the propagation is complete. This may not be a problem if it's just a blog, but if there is data that can change in the meantime during the migration, then this might be a problem.

My suggestion: first lower the TTL for the DNS records to the minimum possible, like 5 minutes for example, let that change propagate for a couple days, THEN do the migration and update the DNS so that the domain points to the new server. Then restore the default TTL setting.

This way you will perhaps lose just up to 5 minutes of data if there is traffic in between

GoDaddy did many changes in the last couple of weeks. Everything is automated on GoDaddy platform. You can host and build Wordpress website in 2 minutes now. This is just for your information.
Your process involves manual transfer. This means you will need to setup cPanel hosting. Download the files from current server using FTP or SFTP. You can use FileZilla for file transfers and setup database in cPanel.
It won't take more than an hour and you should charge $25 per hour.

If this is your regular client and you suppose to continue collaboration with him, you can make it for free or for minimum.
