think of a 'need' the ppl in your town talk about..

start by creating a solution to fill that need.

    best of luck,

Well you can figure out questions like these first:

What service could people in your city benefit from?
How much competitions is there already in that niche?
What can you provide that your competition can't?
How will your connections help you in that niche?

    To your success,

Is there online business in the area ? can you cater for them ?

If not, create a service, could be a community site, can be local business directory, review site.

Build websites and do email marketing for local businesses. You can also build social media pages and posts for them: http://www.warriorforum.com/social-m...nvestment.html

Even if this doesn't turn out to be your cuppa tea, the idea is sound.

If you really want to succeed in your community, provide a service that helps other businesses make more profit, provide more jobs and pay more taxes (although I wouldn't mention that last one...)

You should hang out on the offline subforum. There's bunch of good threads there from few years ago about offline marketing, guerilla marketing and how to make money with it.

While many of your potential customers search Google for information on local services, inevitably a large portion of them find their way to a local business directory.

There are many types of website that you can start with. One that I have seen many of success stories is local directory. Since there is not much competition as you said and if you decide to do the local directory, I suggest to go as broad as you can.

In the cities with many competition, zooming into a particular service has higher chance of success. Example dentist, vegetarian restaurant, etc.

But I thought that realestate websites and cars will be the first choice? because they have the biggest and most frequent transactions?

Even if the realestate websites become success ...you can start brokering realestate yourself..but you cannot become a dentist or open veg resturant easily..

Hate to break it to you, but you can't just start "brokering realestate", at least in the USA. First you need a license, which you have to pass a test to get. Then you need to serve an apprenticeship as an agent under a broker. You then have to pass another test and get another license. It's not a simple process of saying "I built a website, so now I'm going to be a broker."

Selling cars on a commercial scale has its own licensing and regulatory restrictions.

If your connections in your city are in the real estate or car businesses, building a referral type site (like an elevated version of Craigslist) might be an option. Why not talk to some of your connections and see what you come up with?

If you have little competition you can make a lot of money by offering the whole she-bang. Website/Logo design, SEO packages, social networking and everything else that you can outsource.

You'll probably have to educate your prospects about most of what this mean but that's even better as you will be seen as an authority in your field.

You should try and find out what type of industry is the most popular in your small town. I don't know how small it is, but it could be farming, factories, antique stores or just small family owner businesses.

You could look into marketing services for small businesses owners in general, like tax service advice, business management and marketing tips.

If there is a big farming industry, then you could focus on agriculture topics and go from there.

Local search presence early on is crucial. Understanding your local clients and the best strategies and mediums for reaching out to them is the mainly vital thing you can do to secure local online selling success. There’s so much information out there these days that it can be hard to know where to begin, especially for a very busy entrepreneur.
