My experience has been that Google doesn't really care if it is a .ws or .com or .whatever. Surfers are becoming more accustomed to the different extensions as well.

We live in a world where most of the good .coms are gone so we have to improvise and do what we can with what is available. A .ws domain isn't ideal but it can work just fine.

I have had a totally different experience. It seems that .com is given a lot more "juice" and then comes .net and then .org. I would imagine all things being equal that it would be much harder to rank a .ws then a .com on the big "G."

the reason why .com may have more "juice" is because there are simply too many users that host with .com domains. A great SEO-ed .net site is able to over-rank .com sites in search results. In the end it really boils down to how high your ability to optimize your website with the right keywords. Right now the .ws domain may not be as well known as .com, however, eventually it will. Btw, the reason why it is called ws is because it stands for Web Site. , which actually sounds more logical than .com, which is derived from the word "commercial". But oh well, to each and his/her own preferences

The reason a lot of .ws domains are still available is the lack of interest in the .ws extension. .me looks a much better option. If you are looking to buy .ws as an investment, I would advice against it. But if you are going to develop them then there are no issues.
Personally I have stayed away from .ws.

Have been a .ws user for sometime now.. One of the biggest advantages of the .ws domain is that their only major provider, GDI, offers you a affiliate program which you could promote to earn a residual income that would in turn pay your monthly hosting bills. Moreover, you have a free list being build for you as long as the person signs up. So its like a big package built together. One more bonus they are offering now is that within the same provider, they are also offering .com and .net domains.. However, your first domain must be that of .ws ..

There is a risk-free trial of 7 days for you to try out without paying any money.. However the only condition is that you got to fill in your particulars.. Hope it helps
