pseudonym character questions

im creating a character, for one of my websites, and dont want to use myself as the guru.

does anybody have any recommendations on how to create or hire pseudonym characters? i am going to need a pic and i would like to have some video content.

  • Cartoons for the character (in a life-like fashion if you prefer), plus voice only for videos.

    Alternatively, you could hire someone to play the role, but that would require long-term committment. A much more risky strategy.

    Or, if you want to get unethical, find someones pic from overseas on Myspace.

  • The biggest difficulty is when you're male and it's a niche best represented by a female (or vice-versa).

    It makes any speech based video near impossible.

    You can still do slideshow based videos, with text, and they can work well in the right circumstances.

  • thanks for all the great replies, i like the idea of cartoons or speech over video, does anybody have any experience in creating cartoon videos? How does one go about doing that?

    • Depends on your budget and level of patience. And your ability to draw.

      If you keep things very basic, like just a talking head, you can have an illustrator create the character for you and then do different mouths for different sounds. Then, in your animation software, you just assign the different mouths to different sounds in your audio. When the animation is played, it'll look like your character is talking.

      Here is an example that I did:

      The audio is out of sync on YouTube (the original file is fine), but I think it'll give you the general idea what I'm talking about. This is a sample I did long ago and put together very quickly.

      If you do anything more complex, you're either going to have to spend a lot of money with an illustrator drawing the different motions, do all the drawing yourself or outsource the animation, which can get expensive because it's a lot of work!

      Another option is 3D animation, which can be easier to do if you can't draw, but it still takes time and has a learning curve. Plus it can get expensive if you have to buy characters and such, which you probably will if you can't create them yourself.
  • Find a graphic artist who makes mascots. There are some in the Warriors For Hire section and I remember seeing a WSO recently. I think pure animation would be too expensive for most niches, but you could get a number of different poses made and use more of a slideshow approach.
