Intermediate Level Blogging Guides?

Hi All!

I'm looking for a "how to" guide for blogging that's aimed at people who already know the basics. Most guides that I've found spend about 90% of the time talking about how to choose a niche, how to come up with ideas and write articles, how to purchase a domain and use wordpress, and other such basics. I already know how to do those things.

I'm a writer and my main goal for this blog is to highlight writing skills more than have it be a really big money-maker on its own. Something in a "Scary Mommy" type style, with articles that people would share on Pinterest or Facebook.

Maybe I'm looking for a step-by-step guide for writing each post.

Maybe I'm looking for something that has more marketing tips.

Maybe I'm looking for something that has more practical design tips.

I don't really know what exactly I'm looking for, but I haven't seemed to find it, and I don't seem to be hitting on the right keywords.

Anyone have suggestions?

I just did some searching and all I can find is "beginner" stuff.

Shannon, go to Darren Rowse's site (as Discrat suggested) CopyBlogger dot com where he has lots of great posts and ideas for bloggers intending to make money from their posting. He actually does make money from his blog and gives a lot of excellent information away for free. Just watching what and how he does it should help you. Here's the link: Copyblogger

  • User 1: I have a blog that I started in WordPress that has relevant content related to my product which is an eBook. I love the idea how it helped me generate readers and income at the same time. There are a lot of tools and medium that helped me promote my blog and product all at once.

User 2: Wow! It is great that you are already earning from this. I just started blogging and I only use it as a travel journal. Do you have any recommendation on how can I expand my network?

User 3: Writing about your travel experiences is a good start. You can always find a way to make it useful to other people and become their source of tips or travel guides. Share your blog to other and make use of social media like Facebook, Twitter, and more.

User 1: That is a great idea to increase your blog popularity. Also, take into consideration collaborating with other bloggers which can increase your network. If you are also familiar of email marketing, you can also make use of it to reach more people that are interested with the topic.

User 3: That is true. Also keep in mind to be consistent on your topics and generate a constant flow of articles plus try to do some reaction posts on what is hot or not which can catch the reader's attention. When in doubt always ask your friends for help and feedback.

User 2: Those are great suggestions, thank you. I also heard that being up to date on the latest news and doing some comparison between my old post and current one can do the trick. I will surely try those! Thanks!

Now you're onto the content research phase.

You know your niche, so have you found and made a list influential bloggers? Do you know what their top/most popular posts are? You should stick to similar topics in your own blog.

Have you found influencers on social media? I like Twitter the most in general, but Facebook and Instagram and/or Pinterest might be good places depending on your niche. Make a list of authority twitters (literally add them using the Twitter List function, follow them on Facebook, whatever) & read what they post about. This is where you'll find breaking news and topics that are trendy.

Otherwise just make sure you know your niche. What's one single problem they have? Write about one or more ways to solve that particular problem. (Problem: Foundation is flaky. Solution: Stop rubbing it on. "It's Your Fault Your Foundation Is Flaky - Not The Brand" then write a post about how patting on your foundation makes it look a lot smoother and rubbing makes it look flaky and they should buy makeup sponges to apply foundation instead of using their fingers.)

Do you know about ego-bait? You write a post "top 10 blogs you NEED to subscribe to if you want your makeup to slay this Halloween" and then e-mail all 10 bloggers telling them you featured them in an article, hoping that they'll then share your link with their following. You also post up to 6 times on social media (can be between 2-6 days, it's up to you and how often you post) and tag them in it.

(Day 1: "Entering a costume contest this Halloween? Thanks to @Influencer1 and @Influencer2 your makeup is gonna slay - [LINK to post]")

(Day 2: "Still struggling to figure out the best way to do your makeup this Halloween? @Influencer3 @Influencer4 and @Influencer5 got you fam - [LINK to post]")

Pretty good way to boost traffic, especially for a new blog.

    Hey Shannon,

hint hint - I have a blog too.

The trick is to find out what everyone else is doing in your niche, and do it in your own way. For example, find out what's popular in the blogs in the niche you wanna do, then do something similar - swipe their headlines, content, how-tos, etc.

Monetization wise, the opportunities are huge, but most importantly in blogging is that you know exactly who you're serving. If you're going blind, even putting up Google adsense can work. Then affiliate offers of offline/online products - Amazon, etc. When you got that critical mass going in a community, then go for your own products. Or... you could just go own products all the way, but you're going to need to leverage traffic from other people through guest-blogging/interviewing/link-baiting/etc. Take a look at moz.org. I say the big, big cheese nowadays isn't in search/seo but in social media, esp facebook. But that is a whole new ball game that i'm trying to figure out my way through too.

Tough work though, so make sure you get some help/outsource.

Thanks all. I'm definitely going to check out some of those sites.

Yes, I'm a writer and I have no problems *writing* posts. I also have no problems getting ideas and other things like that.

What I have trouble with is making the blog look pretty. And remembering to do things like add keywords to the WP posts. And then I'll be ready to hit the publish button and I think "GAH! This needs a pretty picture." and so on.

It's that type of thing that I don't have a streamlined process for....

You can probably hire a tech guy from odesk or elance to do all of that for you. haha otherwise you can look for some wordpress plugins but they'll cost (some are free though). I have one that allows you to search for stock images directly in the editor. And you can also autofill seo stuff.
