Is it better to give away a £50 gift card (from any chosen store) or a popular item worth £50 e.g. the new Amazon Echo Dot for a prize draw?

    I'd give away the gift card. Unless the product you give away is very closely related to the reason your promotion and sought after. However, if you don't have your own product, I'd try to get a business to give you a product for free to promote. Win/win.

    Card to a popular store... Because it's hard to match what someone wants... A card that can be used to buy different products is perceived as more attractive by more people than whatever item you choose.

    Bad idea (store gift card) because you will get 87% random traffic that could care less about your niche.

    Give away something niche related, that keeps your traffic laser focused.
