Should I Learn Development

Forgive my quick second post here - just discovered this forum and excited to see a lot of information and very helpful people all in one location!

I've been tossing around the idea of learning web development to aid my niche site dream. I'm a writer/content marketer at heart but more and more am realizing the benefit of good site design to UX and search.

I also think it may be a good "hedge" on things. If I pour my heart into this project (and I have been and intend on continuing to do so) and find out that I don't have what it takes or can't earn an income from it at least I'll have the backup of job prospects with some development expertise.

Thoughts?

Right now I work about 25-30 hours a week on my sites so could infuse 10hrs a week on more technical development training (Front End - CSS, JS etc)

You could do that but with so many options with wordpress, themes and plugins I find it much easier to go that way and concentrate on the things that make money.

However, you might have a passion for coding so I don't mean to discourage that in any way

      Thanks again Gary,

I've always found wordpress to be quite robust. However I feel at some point down the line I may need some customization on a site - however I guess I could always outsource that.

Out of curiosity do you run/earn income from your own sites or are you employed by someone else?

  • @freshblogger ;

Go and do where your heart is.

Many here will share .. that development requires same or little bigger heart than what you have given already to "writer/content marketer ".

So if i was you... i will stick with my initial heart and simply outsource or hire a partner to this job of development.

It depends on your direction and what you plan to do.

If you plan to make money from web development and build a business around it, it is definitely a great decision to learn web development.

If you plan to do Internet Marketing, there are many tools available nowadays that are very easy to use and doesn't required any technical skills. So spending weeks and months of learning web development are not needed.

However, if it is your true passion in web development, I would say just go for it. You will enjoy it in the process and with all the expertise you have in web development later, you can build products that cater for IM niche and make money from it.

My thoughts are that if the success of your business depends on content that you stay focused on that. Venturing too deep into web development diffuse your focus and besides you are unlikely to be all that good at it, relative to your skill at content marketing, for quite a while. There is a huge market full of technical talent of all kinds.

That said some technical web development skill or at least understanding would be very useful in selecting and managing technical help. Do learn a little but don't actually do the work yourself.
