Steering clear of snake oil salesmen

Like many of you I am mainly here to gain new knowledge and insights in how to thrive in this industry and have made many strides in the five years I've been in business. I have mainly been successful due to trial and error and have yet to really delve into these message boards and that's a shame considering the sheer amount of data there is in these discussions. In fact, this is my first post on here and I am debating whether I should become a War Room member but would like to learn more first to make sure this is a good use of my time. I am hoping I can utilize these threads in a productive way that's conducive to growing my business. While I have had a decent amount of success I know I can do more and while I've been developing tricks along the way I still believe I've barely scratched the surface.

With that being said, the internet is ripe with scammers and "snake oil salesmen" and I'm curious if anyone on here has experienced some of that within these discussions. I've been raised to believe that there is a sucker born every minute and if something seems too good to be true, most likely it is too good to be true. Luckily I haven't had anything major come my way in the form of people trying to get over on me (other than those that wouldn't pay for projects-which is another discussion for another day).

As I go through some of the threads I am seeing an overwhelming amount of advertising that appears to resemble "get rich quick" schemes and it's kind of hard to decipher what is a legitimate offer or product I might be interested in pursuing. I am also interested in seeing what others have to say in how they go about finding great information and I welcome any stories you all have on times you have encountered scammers and how you dealt with them.

I am fairly new to these discussions, although I am familiar with how the threads work. I am not by any means accusing anyone of trying to get over on others within these forums, but I'm also curious if any of you all have insight on how to get the most of the discussions on here. Like the rest of you my time is very valuable and I really feel this could be a great tool to help me move forward and achieve my goals.

To sum it all up: How often do all of you see spam and other recycled posts on here? Are there any tips or tricks you can share to avoid wasting your time on them?

    Correct on both counts.

Spend some time here and you will fairly quickly figure out who is full of shit and who is not.

    Hint: It's about 95% /5 % split.

Be very cautious and keep your money in your pocket until you are confident in your abilities to detect BS.

My vote is a hearty NO!

I just signed up yesterday and was also thinking about signing up for the war room since it comes highly suggested by this sites Moderators (I assume). Thanks for the heads up, I will heed your advice, on both the war room and sizing up the scammers.

Nice to see someone come onto an MMO forum with their eyes open... Like Brent said there are probably more scammers, liars and cheats than you expected..

    The problems are:
    1. The entry level to MMO is extremely low (Attracting scum from all corners of this planet)
    2. Anyone can make any claim and it's not easy to disprove
    3. The anonymous nature of the Internet makes it easier for scammers etc.
    4. There are so many desperate, gullible people so there is always a willing market
    5. Even if people are caught scamming etc there is no real punishment, Internet is still like the old wild west

    Anyway
    Good Luck

What I do is use business fundamentals to judge whether the content of an offer or a thread / post would most likely be helpful for what I want to do ...

For example, I don't seem to find significant use in step by step blueprints and systems for making money online; and

That's mainly because I believe formulating a plan to make money online or offline is a creative process that's unique to each person and his or her current situation, living conditions and fiscal and non-fiscal resources like time, experience, skills, knowledge, professional and personal networks, etc.

However, I do find efficient utility in some specific tips, advice, tools and step by step guides in using certain apps and platforms that are relevant to what I want to do within my own business plans and operating procedures, i.e. An app to find Facebook groups and LinkedIn groups where my target audience hangs out to discuss relevant news and content; Tips and advice drawn from experience in using Google Adwords / Facebook / Bing and other specific advertising networks for PPC / PPM / PPV and click to call campaigns when targeting relevant audiences; Step by step guides in setting up a Youtube channel and optimizing videos under that channel for relevant Youtube searches, etc.

You will find a lot of advice on here that is worthy of not only reading but also putting into practice. It isn't too hard to decipher between the "Snake Oil" salesmen and the legitimate marketer.

I recommend using the power of the search bar in order to avoid reading anything other than what you are searching for.

I too don't comment often, but find a lot of valuable information from some top notch people here.
    Good luck to you

I think most of the training here has some gems of wisdom in them. At least the ones I"ve bought. I never spend more money than I"m comfortable with spending.

I think the worst thing I spent money on was a Tshirt making WSO and even that was not that bad. It is just the info was free. I did get a ton of free graphics to make tshirts. But basically it was here is some tshirts designs and advertise on facebook

A Warrior who had bought my book recently asked for my opinion on a WSO, so I looked at it carefully as though I was considering buying the WSO myself.

I found it full of discrepancies and wild claims. The earnings claims varied in the WSO seller's various posts.

It wasn't too difficult to see this was snake oil on offer.

i dont know about tricks, but a tip would be to act on a method you believe to be plausible.

give yourself a deadline and a measurable task "get x number of subscribers into my slow carb diet funnel by 11/06/16" then provide value and try to convert them.. affiliate products etc...

working on a project will keep you occupied and free from them.

at the same time, you'll find yourself using the warrior forum search bar and youtube a whole lot more for guides and tutorials on specific tasks!!

Common sense is all it really needs. No tricks. COMMON SENSE.

DOES IT MAKE SENSE? IF SOMEONE WAS MAKING AN EASY $30,000 PER MONTH WOULD THEY **** WELL GIVE IT AWAY FOR $7....??????? THINK LONG AND HARD......DOES IT MAKE ANY SENSE???????

And in business nothing lasts for-ever.

    It's dead easy.

Ask them for real proof of every claim they make. Contracts, legal, etc...they soon find excuses to back out.

I had a guy here years ago trying to sell some B*S*. I asked him to give me proof of his claim and a legal contract stating what he said he could do he would do.

Guess what? He "fired me" saying i was not a good "sucker" customer for his brilliant opportunity.

Sadly, a fool and his money.......see it all the time. Got to pay your stupid taxes. Some never stop though.

While on the subject of snake oil, in particular, I read an article awhile back that found there actually were some health benefits albeit minor ones in Chinese snake oil. So the formula itself wasn't completely worthless. The problem was it was peddled as a miracle cure for just about any ailment one could possibly have and the claims made by those selling it were outlandish at best. These men were also known to peddle their products from town to town and quickly would hightail it out of town once it was quickly made apparent that people were duped. I appreciate all of the comments and I agree, common sense usually can spot a phoney, but given the amount of offers and number of swindlers there are it's still difficult to see what's legit and what's not. Not to mention none of the people selling their version of snake oil are taking much risk since they aren't having to physically travel from town to town. I think how I will use this in the future is to ignore most of the WSO stuff unless it's for something I am seeking out like new products and services. I guess I didn't expect to be advertised to quite as much as I have on here and was surprised to see posts that very closely resemble spam.

For the everyday newbie just starting out online, it is very very difficult to decipher fact from fiction and legit vs. scam. Unfortunately, most people will have to simply settle for learning by experience and growing in wisdom/knowledge as they proceed down their own personal IM path.
