HELP! I can't get traffic!

I have set up a website to promote a fiction writing e-class (learnwritenow.com). The class has the potential to rake in some serious money, but I can't get any traffic to the site. I don't have a list. I can't find any affiliates to work with me. I've tried traffic exchanges and article marketing. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

how can you name a domain teaching you to write as learnwritenow. Think you should get that sorted before chasing traffic.

I actually thought the domain name was a cute play on words, learn right now/learn write now.

Anyway, as far as traffic, that's always the tough part. I write articles to get traffic but there are lots of ways, most taking time and work. Just keep plugging away, I think it's a good idea!

Completely agree with this statement. I just did a quick keyword search.
For the phrase 'learn how to write fiction' you are looking at one search
a day with 109,000 competing webpages. For the phrase 'learn how to write'
you are looking at 891 searches a day, which is good, but there are
      76,900,000 competing webpages.

In my opinion, with keywords like this it will be an uphill battle.

Do you have any friends who have a list they could suggest your website to?

Yes, keywords are the, uh, key, even to get an organic hit from a search. You must have good keywords.

Build a list! Get people on the list by offering high quality content and a freebie which is closely related. When people are on your list it will be easier to recommend your product to them.$200+ is a lot and may be out of reach for many, perhaps a price cut would help also.

Start writing more content on your site about "fiction writing".For instance, put a new section on your site with the title "fiction writing" and post the content there.Search engines will notice it and you will see traffic soon enough.

You can also visit related blogs about "fiction writing", leave good comments and get a link back to your site.

Why not buy traffic? Once you know your conversion rate, it'll be easier to recruit some affiliates... While your doing that, start building your list mayne. Getting others to share their lists gets easier when you have more to offer than a product... Good luck!

Well it is hard to get tons of traffic to something so specific. I would consider myself a writer, and I would say it would rake in some serious money especially since most people want to learn how to write fiction, etc. I would say what you're doing wrong could possibly be in not writing enough articles in article marketing. Traffic exchange IMO isn't as effective as article marketing. The one problem I've noticed is that you're not aiming at a large multitude of people with the same interest, or in the same niche of writing. So basically if you "fish in the right sea" you can get a higher chance of making the serious money.

  • Give it a little time. Write about ten more articles on EZA, spin them and submit them to all the other directories.

You have excellent keywords "learn" and "write." Keep adding content and links, and you should start bubbling up the Google ranks for some pretty decent strings that people search for many times per day. I get decent search traffic on surviveunemployment(dot)com because I have two good keywords in the meaty part of my domain. The same will happen for you over time. Hint: Name your pages so that they combine with part or all of you domain name to form key phrases. Examples: Learnwritenow.com/well (will get people searching for "learn to write well," ~/grammar ("learn grammar"), "~/fiction" ("learn to write fiction") and so on.

The main thing is to get your content steaming along, update it frequently, build links and BE PATIENT. It's just like fishing. If you jerk on the pole impatiently, you'll never catch anything. Just use the right bait and wait patiently.

I would ask why people would want to learn from you (not being negative here -- an honest question). If the reason why people want to learn to write fiction is so they can retire and write novels, you should bring that to bear in your content and keywords. There are a ton of ways you can take this, but to be honest your site is pretty offputting. I'd work on why your audience cares about what you have to say, then work on doubling down on that.

I would dump the whole sales page thing-instead concentrate on building your list, for $249 your gonna have to build a relationship with your customer.

Offer a free 12 part course on writing when visitors come to your site, then follow up -give them good content in your newsletter, then mention your product.

      That the barebones!

I sell writing-related material, and I agree with the OP.

Before they hand you $249, people need to know who you are. You need to build relationships.

        Consider:

        * A blog

        * An ezine

        * A free autoresponder course "Get started writing YOUR novel today"

        * Visit writing-related forums, and give out free how-to info, and make friends

        * After you've started blogging, contact bloggers in your niche and offer to write guest posts

        * Various offerings. $249 is a big outlay when people aren't familiar with you. Start small. Offer a $20 product, a $60 product... then people know what you provide, and may consider a more expensive product.

When you're selling writing-related material, it's all about presence, credibility and authority, and the relationships you build.

Spend the next 12 months building your presence, and you'll do well. (You've created a site, so you've taken the first step.)

        Good luck. :-)

First, you will need to write at a lot more articles. Plus you want to be sure that your resource/bio box description has a strong call to action. Are you offering a free report or free article if someone visits your site?

Next, you will want to work on other methods for getting backlinks (social bookmarking, blog posts, hubpages, squidoo, forum posts, etc.).

    Personally,

My business partner and I absolutely love taking our articles and turning each one into a video or a few videos. It's so easy to simply turn on the camera and start talking away about what you just wrote in your article. We have even taken whiteboards and taught people mini lessons on video. The coolest thing though is that if you post your videos once, they can work for you for months and years to come. We go all out and have each probably created over 1,000 videos. Now that's leverage! Especially if you use Traffic Geyser or Tube Mogul to post those videos to multiple video sharing sites. Hope that helps!

Put an opt in page and build your list. Give your customers' free content in the form of a newsletter. Build their trust and ask them what they need to learn about writing. You are no way going to build the success of this busienss overnight it is going to take a lt of work before people part with that dosh.
Write at least two articles a day, blog at least one and comment on blogs add meaningful comments on thero peoples blogs and start asking for JV partners when you have built the traffic

Thanks for all the suggestions. Let me clear up a few things:

    1. The name "LearnWriteNow" was used to be cute and for SEO reasons. The key word "learn write" was very popular with little competition. Sorry to those of you who don't like it.

    2. I have written more than two articles, but I only have two on Ezinearticles.com. I actually have several on other article sites, including AssociatedContent.com.

    3. I have one video out, and I do plan to make more.

    4. I have started commenting in some forums. That seems to be making a little difference.

    5. I am offering a free e-book and a subscription to my newsletter, "Writing Nuggets."

    6. As far as "Ning," that's still pretty new to me, and I'm not really sure how that works. I'd appreciate any feedback or resources on that one.

    7. Concerning giving away a free 12-week e-course, what would I have left to teach in my paid course? Why would someone pay for a course that covers the same material as one that I'm offering for free? I'm a little confused on that one.

I will take your advice. I will try to be patient. I will write more articles, visit more forums, and make more videos. Thanks for all the help!

Regarding point 2., Try writing articles on web 2.0 sites like squidoo, hubpages, weebly etc.

Regarding point 3., Make an account at tubemogul and submit to many video sites at once.

Regarding point 4, remember to make an *click-inducing* signature

Regarding point 7, Do an abbreviated version of your course. Meaning, instead of elaborating deeply upon the topic. Do quick one-liners but leave out the major details, leave them halfway between earth and their goal. Main point is to, write up a course which resembles the bare skeleton of your main course. Make them crave for more and more. A free course is a form of marketing, and the point of marketing is not to give information, but rather, to induce the readers the desire to purchase your main product.

      Hope all these helps

      Regards,
      Edmund

I think your play on words is CUTE also. I do not think your domain name will hurt you at all here. You have the the two keywords that are in your niche. Learn and Write. So you are good to go with it. I would definitely start a blog and link your readers to your site. You will need to have key rich words in every article you post. After each post I would ping as well as bookmark. Pingoat for pinging and Onlywire for social bookmarks. Both are free services. When you ping your blog, it alerts the search engines to send their little crawlers out and evaluate your content. This helps in organic traffic and will start getting you on some pages.

What Only Wire can do for you is send your post to quite a few places all in one swoop. Places like Digg, Facebook, Mixx and tons of others. This does take a bit of time to set up but is well worth the time invested.

As far as getting affiliates to want to promote your product, you may want to consider turning your product into a membership type of deal. One thing the Super Affiliates look for is recurring income. Also when you set up your affiliates, you will want to make sure you give them a reason to keep promoting your product. Affiliates are very fickle if they do not have guidance and help from the product developer to help them along the way. If you can not do this yourself, you may want to look at hiring an affiliate manager to do it all for you.

Feel free to visit any of my sites for more info.

Hope this helps. Best of luck with your business.

I'm pretty sure that the links you get from Associated Content are no follow unless you strip that part out of the code before you publish. I've had much more traffic from articles at Ezine than any of the ones I have on AC, so I would suggest you concentrate more on building backlinks with Ezine.

I would also make sure you are building a list. Give away a free 5 page report showing people a tip on writing in exchange for their email address and name.

This way once you build up your list you can email the entire list and you will get tons of traffic.

I don't see anything wrong with the pun in the domain - other than it's not a very original one.

For one thing - the price of your product might just be a turn off. You can take fiction writing classes from colleges and be taught by actual authors and professors at that price. Start lower for your basics and if you need more returns, make "add-on" products.

And lastly - you may be playing around 4WD paths where there isn't much traffic - you want traffic, go stand at a crowded intersection, if you get my drift.

I think many warriors are ready to buy good stuff out there.

Beside, try to create a blog to blog about your product with multiple keywords. You should know by now Google spider search blogspot keywords the fastest. So you might consider to create a blogspot, without cost.

I will also suggest you to use twitter and facebook to generate traffic. I personally use facebook group to generate traffic. It works...

*ahem* It might not be traffic that's the problem, but the page itself.

Don't get me wrong. As a fellow writer (who's had her eye on fiction-writing since she learned the alphabet), I think it's a great idea. However, the "urgency" factor isn't there for me - I don't feel inclined to pay $250 when I can go to Barnes & Noble.

I've seen fiction-writing salesletters, though, that charged a fair amount AND knew how to grab the emotions. I would seriously consider getting a salesletter done - Metronicity, on the WF, does an insanely good job for very reasonable prices.

I'd also consider getting a new layout/graphics done.

If it sounds overwhelming, don't worry. Just remember where you are - there really isn't any better place than the Warrior Forum to learn how to jumpstart your business. Good luck!

There is so much advice coming your way - it is amazing!

As you have a landing page and are trying to make a sale through that, the best thing you can do to get traffic to it is build content on other sites and then at the end of that content - put a link pointing to your site.

Traffic will be generated by the content you are adding to those other sites. However, you should be aware that building content is not going to happen easily.

    It will take significant work.

      Hi Dana

There's plenty of good advice upthread, but the real lesson here (and I'm sorry to use you as an example) is not to create a product until you know how you're going to reach your target market.

Proper research is vital. You need to determine if there is actually a market for your product, whether it's a buying market, what other products are selling in that market, who your competition is, how they're getting their sales, where your potential customers hang out and what keywords they use to access the information you intend to provide.

Doing all this will reveal the best ways for you to market your product. Only after establishing the demand and the means of access to your market, should you commit to creating your product.

But now that you have your product , I agree with those who have expressed reservations about your sales page.

For a start, your heading contains a list of features. You should replace it with a heading that is benefit-laden. Otherwise, many visitors just won't read any further.

This probably isn't the place to go into the rest of the copy, but I'll just add that having an unpopulated and unused forum on the site is just advertising the fact that you have few, if any, existing customers. I'd leave that off until you've got some buyers.

      Good luck.

You have had some great advice in all the replies! There is one form of gaining traffic that I don't see mentioned and that is Giveaways. I joined two giveaway sites and got quite a few sign ups from them.

Join a giveaway and contribute an eBook sending people to your opt-in page or landing page. They do ask that you promote their site and get sign ups so that you have enough points to be able to contribute you product but you also have the option of upgrading. By doing this you get points allocated to you immediately. You can advertise 3 products and even sell some products. Believe me this has worked for me.

There is a giveaway opening on Friday 25/09 so if you can get a product on there before then you should be okay. If you would like a giveaway site that is current PM me.

Let us know how you get on.

There is indeed a wealth of information here =)

You will have to invest more time in SEO and / or PPC.

Increase your article submissions, press releases, yahoo! answers, social bookmarkings, quality forum posting, articles in Web 2.0 sites like Squidoo and Hubpages, blog commenting, link exchanges, and video marketing.

In my opinion, If I were to pay $200+ for an online product, it would take a lot more relationship / credibility building on the seller's part. I agree that you might want to give away a free report first and build a relationship from there.

Could you break the course down into monthly installments? $249 is a lot up front.

Could you offer a money back guarantee? Along the lines of - if you haven't earned at least $xxx by the end of 8 weeks, 3 months (or whatever) I will refund your money.

If you are charging $249 you need to tell me more about yourself sooner. What have you written? Who's published it? Where can I read it? What's so special about YOUR writing style that I should pay that kind of money to learn from you? You need to make me believe that YOU are the person who can teach me to write.

What will I learn from you that I can't learn from a book? From a class? From a DVD?

If you have a little extra money to spend i don't know your finances you might want to try ppc.. till your free traffic gets built up.. I almost forgot your most important step optimize your website for the search engines very important to get long lasting free organic traffic.. good luck you'll get there!

My prefer ways of driving traffic to my websites are:

    - SEO
    - PPC

    SEO
    -----
Looking at the keywords meta tag of your main page, you have most likely done your keyword research. However, I notice you didn't include your most important keyword(s) in the Title meta tag of your main page. That's something you should seriously consider to do from a SEO standpoint.

    PPC
    -----
To be listed on the organic side of SERPs would take time. Mean while, if you have the budget, why not consider to use PPC to drive traffic. With PPC, you should have a landing page created for each of your keywords to increase relevancy. From each landing page you may then link back to your main page or offer them something valuable to opt in to your list.

it's more to it than creating products.

It's one thing to HAVE value to offer - that's the 1st hurdle many people
feel they have a hard time reaching.

It's another thing to MARKET the value you have to offer. And this is to
me the easiest step to do when you know how to do it.

I use a mix of FREE & PAID marketing. One thing you could try is listbuilders.

Yes, they work. Not safelists, but listbuilders is like a higher quality.

I don't know if there's a market there for you in that niche but it's worth
    a try.

Try VirualURL.com and Listjoe.com - you can get free memberships there

Firstable you need to be patient. It takes time.
A lot of work to do in this business. It just always sounds easy sometimes, huh !

you need to write more articles, post A LOT OF VIDEOS, socialbookmarking it, blog it.

You also can di PPC, i think this is the fastest way, kinda expensive, but will save a lot a time and effort
but....you need to do your research on your niche to do your PPC, you dont want to pay $2 per click, do you?

So...do your niche hunting, PPC it, and with a little luck you will get more traffic to your site.

You can also learn and try some methods that you can see HERE to get more traffic to your site.

    don't worry, It's Free. :-)

    Good Luck
