How do I know where to add my ad code in HTML?

I have got it right a few times but haven't been able to figure out what I'm doing right or wrong. I'm kind of adding it here and there and seeing what works but I haven't had much luck with that approach.

It either doesn't show on my site/blog or it appears in the wrong place,

can anyone help?:confused:

    If this is a wordpress site then go to your Appearance/widgets area, drag a "text" widget over into the sidebar (from left to right), open out the text widget once it has been dropped into the sidebar, paste the HTML into the content field. Click Save and you should be all done, you can drag and drop the text widget up or down to suit where you want it in the sidebar. If it is too big for the sidebar then open out the text widget again and see if you can edit the sizes down a bit.

    Hope that helps a bit if that is a wordpress site.
