Whats the big deal about mixing family and friends with your business?

I hear it all the time, dont mix business with pleasure.

I dont know if I completely agree.

I have worked on and off with my sister on different projects for years, and very successfully.

She gets me, I get her - there is no bullshit and there is nothing left unsaid. I am younger yet she has always done hours for either the business I have been working for at the time or now that I run my own business she does casual work for me when needed. Nothing too much as I am just starting out, but eventually I hope to give her as many hours as she likes so I can share the load a little and not work 24/7

She works full time and wants extra hours, I want to engage someones services that I trust and that isnt likely to end up being a competitor or take my business.

So, whats the big deal.

Sure plenty of things apparently. She might want to stop working and then there will be an issue between us? Nope all good if that happens.

She might not be happy with her hourly rate and get annoyed with me? Nope all good, I will increase this as I increase my hourly rate.

She may not work as hard, as technically Im just her little sis and she doesnt need to? Please. that is just stupid.

I am of the mindset that whomever you choose to work with there can be problems, whether they are a family member or not.. so whats the big deal.

I have issues with trusting people who work with me in my business, I have been burnt before and someone who was doing hours for me took a client and went on their merry way (not cool). So for me, this arrangement works just fine, however it really depends on the personality of the people you choose to work with, it comes down to this more than whether they are a relation.

Have you mixed work with pleasure? Are you breaking the cardinal rule of business? If I am it seems to be working so I am interested to hear how you manage it and if you have any dramas.
