Are people BSing you about traffic, links and SERPS?

Hi Warriors,

I keep seeing people selling stuff on link building and traffic generation which has BS examples.

I've written about this subject a bunch of times to share what works, so it annoys me when I see people BSing and I know a lot of readers will believe it.

For example, I could legitimately say:

"I have one blog that comes up number one in Google among 89,000,000 results. It took me 5 minutes to create that blog and even less time to market it. I will show you my secret for $xx"

In reality - I made a video when I created that blog because I knew Warriors were around who didn't know how to set up a blog and get it indexed etc.. That blog is now the one I just refered to - no.1 in Google.

That might sound great - however, there's a BIG unanswered question (even if I told you the keywords used).

The big question is............... AND HOW MUCH TRAFFIC ACTUALLY SEARCHES FOR THAT TERM?

Google can happily throw millions of irrelevant sites up for any search result - if you get listed at the top of a crap pile - that doesn't mean you're making money.

Obviously you can also throw "" around your search term too (which these people seem to also not do) but that tells you more about your competition and nothing about your potential traffic and earnings.

Don't let people BS you with these stupid high numbers.

It's the same as me saying I could sell you a Twitter account with 100,000 followers and give you some BS about "factoring in 1/100 response rate and you sending them a link once a day, you could make $10k a month" - It's all BS.

Don't let anyone blind you with numbers. The internet is NOT just a numbers game.

Very well said Andy. It's all about QUALITY, not QUANTITY and this is what people always miss out.

Come on Andy...tell us how you REALLY feel.

Honestly, I hate all that crap myself. And having done this for a very long
time, I can tell you honestly that the opposite is also true.

Just because your site isn't ranked number 1 at Google doesn't mean you
can't make money from it. You won't find ANY of my sites anywhere NEAR
the top of the SERPs if you looked with an LBT telescope.

But I know how to get people to my sites...and that is ALL that matters.

No, it's NOT a numbers game.

It's a "give people what they want" game.

There was someone in another forum bragging about how they were dominating and crushing Google with all the top spots for some term.

Sounds great. Where's the ebook. Wait, what's the proof?

Turns out the total "competition" was less than 10 pages.

The "competition" being the ridiculous and meaningless number that is usually in the millions which Google refers to when a search is returned.

(They're no longer a member of that forum.)

I just laugh when I see those types of statements.

First off, as I understand things, Google only returns a maximum of 1,000 results for any given search. Meaning that for that search, my real competition is that 1,000 result set.

Second, many people take as gospel the idea that searchers never go beyond page three of the results and most never past page one. If that were true, then your true competition is 30 results for the former and 10 for the latter.

          Plus the ads, of course.

Even if you get to the first page, you still have to compete with the other results on that page (both paid and organic) to get the click.

SERPs and traffic are only very early parts of the process, not ends in themselves. Unless, of course, you're selling SERP rankings.
