Anything I can do if I consider I was ripped off?

Years ago I paid someone to do several things (redesign website, promotions and SEO) and I was in an absolutely desperate situation and consider I was largely ripped off.

About the only thing I'm happy with is the website redesign. For the promotions I caught him through my tracking system taking $100 from me to do something and then turning around and pay $5 on Fiverr to have the promotion done while he kept $95 for himself (he was well aware I couldn't even afford groceries at the time).

However the worst of the worst which is what I'm wondering if there's anyway I can get compensation. He convinced me to pay him $500/month for SEO and convinced me if I stopped at any time everything would have been wasted. As I said since I was broke I had to get a multi thousand dollar load to pay his SEO services, after 6 months and $3000 my website went from something like page 25 to 22, which obviously had no impact whatsoever on my traffic and sales.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Also, this completely put me off trusting anyone whatsoever with SEO, if ever I dared try again how can I avoid getting scammed for $3000 I didn't have to begin with?

Thanks
#ripped

well, ill tell you, i've been in your shoes, i was kind of ripped off but for $50 and surprisingly the same thing SEO. Ill give you a tip. sit down and study. then take effective action. if you really want to do this you're going to have to wear multiple hats, copywriting, sales, marketing, seo, and whatever skill/discipline you decide to do.

but here's the secret. "go to bed a little wiser each night" not ALOT, not 50 pages of a book, 1 to 2 pages, absorb, take action.

any skills that you'll pay someone else for you can learn yourself

    "years ago?"

You "caught him" doing something that is considered totally acceptable by people on this forum - arbitrage by buying cheap work from Fiverr and reselling it at a profit.

If you were taken advantage of years ago - you need to let it go. "years" is too late to be asking for refunds and carrying the anger will just hold you back now.

When you hire someone to do work for you - it's not their job to worry about your financial situation. That may sound rude - but they are working to pay their own bills and that is reality. From a practical standpoint - someone who can't afford food should not be hiring web design or promotion.

Learn to do your own SEO - it's not rocket science. Once you know what needs to be done - it's easier to know what questions to ask and who to hire.

      e.
Sorry, but if someone I know who vocally says they are in dire straits and I proceed to take their $100 regardless and turn around and get someone to do it on Fiverr for $5 ... that's just disgusting, imo

It may not be against the Law and it may not be against what many Warriors here think is Right or Wrong...but it's just plain not right.

Sorry that is my opinion and you are entitled to yours.

    Sorry to hear that.
Sounds like some fiverr arbitrage. May have to strike it up to school of hard knocks and hickies.

forget your past we ALL Did that at one point or another. how much money have I spent? Who knows. If you are a marketer you shouldn't even be thinking about that just move forward. I like kay kings remarks arbitrage is arbitrage.

I guess there was no contract. The way you put it was like friends doing business together. Then I thought maybe you did some work through some of freelance platforms. If so, there are some legal mechanisms to use. Yet, the trouble with the time itself. Not much you can do about it. Maybe you should let bygones be bygones. You learned your lesson the hard way. You know how they say, you fool me once, fool me twice, who is to blame. Take care!

I would suggest you stop living in the past.... things like this happen when people are uneducated and it sounds like that was the case back then. I'm new to IM but before hiring people I look at reviews and make sure that we both have a clear understanding of what we want to get accomplished. Most importantly I dont go into situations blindly, I always do some research.

Bottom line - get up, move on and make some more money!

Unless you had some sort of agreement where your money would be refunded unless you attained a certain search position, you really have no case. Practically everybody subcontracts certain things to other people. It is your fault for paying more than a service is worth and not knowing you, yourself, could get it done on Fiverr.

And, like others have said, it is one thing if you paid somebody a couple months ago and feel like you got scammed. Years later? Sorry, but you've just got to let it go. You live and learn.

Instead of spending $3000 for SEO and gotten nothing. Why don't you spend for some quality SEO training and do it yourself?

I agree if you hire to design something, that's fine. But SEO is a long process that I highly recommend pay a quality SEO training and get started do it yourself. In case that you don't have time to learn and do SEO, you can hire an SEO company instead of a freelancer

Besides, there are a lot of SEO expert blogs that you shouldn't ignore while learning about SEO as such Backlinko, Moz, Search Engine Land,... or Matthew woodward.

I am not going to put my self in your shoe, and I believe YOU shouldn't put YOURSELF in your shoe too!
At this time, i think you should JUMP out of the box which trapped you this long time.
Two things you can learn from this:

    1. from business transaction point of view, you were enter into a "Contract", you Agreed to pay him for the service, unless he offer you 30 or 60 days money back or result promised, you cann't blame anything other than yourself, not enough research.

    2. from business owner view, this is a prefect business opportunity for you, use fiverr as a resource, adding more value, then offer this as your own service to your customer, do some marketing, $5 product + a bit of work may turn out $100 service revenue.

I would say to you to chalk this up as one of your "Failures" toward your eventual success.

You viewed the transaction at the time "Valuable" which made it beneficial to you.
Now looking back you're deciding it wasn't as worthwhile.

There are probably hundreds of Warriors on this forum who didn't get exactly what they thought they were paying for, or the purchase was performed with them as a middleman (affiliate marketing)(arbitrage).

Looks to me like you learned a valuable lesson and gained some experience as well. Nicely done!

In short, just forget about it, learn your lesson and move on.

Also that's not exactly scamming....It would have been a scam, if he took your money and disappeared. However, the job was done, but not at a price you were hoping for is another thing....Whether the person did the work himself or outsourced, it makes no difference.

You agreed to pay for X amount of whatever work, the person delivered everything to you, so what are you moaning about?

It's not his fault that you chose to work for him at agreed rates?

You need to let it go. You will never get your money back, maybe you can
    negotiate for some other services.
I consider SEO a scam. Everyone promises you page 1, but wants money up front.
Many industries are built on scamming. Like patent attorneys.
You wind up learning in life. Become a better shopper. Ask dozens of questions.
    and interview several vendors.
and sleep on it overnight. and listen for some unrealistic claims in their pitch.
If this helps you, hit the Thanks button, I am collecting thanks.

I not only agree with you - I'm one of the few here who has NEVER used Fiverr for anything. What is often proposed here (and seems acceptable to many members) is buying as cheaply as possible and then marking up the price 10X or more - which is ridiculous.

That's not to say arbitrage is wrong - markups are common in business. It can work well as long as you are providing the quality a client expects and not trying to "make a killing" with the price.

That said, I do not take on client's financial problems. A couple times I've had potential clients tell me I'm their "last hope" they "have no more money", etc - I turned down the work. I don't need that pressure.

    Go to PAYING TRAFFIC.

It's more predictable and you can better do the math.

Will you put the future of your family or kids in the hope that google won't put your sites down the first page?

You always have to do your research on people before you pay them for any services they do, ask them for proof of helping other people with their sites and rankings, i' m sure you know now, move on and hope you let other people know not to work with the guy who couldn't deliver on the results
