Is a privacy policy mandatory? Ive heard mixed reports.

I'm curious is a privacy policy i mandatory on websites and blogs?

I had a conversation with a web developer a few days ago and he said it was illegal not to have one - is this the case.

    Some like it, some don't. I heard google looks for it. So why not just put one on your site. It will take you all of 5 minutes to accomplish. You can get plenty on the web. Just google "Free privacy policy"

    Not only Privacy Policy, but your website needs Terms and Conditions (Terms of Use) too. Regarding Privacy Policy, you should evaluate the situation with the privacy data of your users/visitors who get in contact with your website. You have to make sure that your potential responsibility and liability is either minimized or completely eliminated. Otherwise, you will find yourself in a serious trouble asking yourself what and why went wrong. Yet, there are some guys who will possibly try to convince you that there is nothing to worry about. That you don't need these docs in the first place. It's up to you to decide. Google about it a little bit and see for yourself.

    If you use any affiliate programs like Amazon, Google Adsense, etc they require it.

    Whether or not it's illegal not to have one is a question you need to ask a qualified lawyer.

    Yes privacy policy is important. So is terms of service. Legal matters. With copa laws and others you must cover yourself as a website owner or publisher. Its one of the reasons google requires it especially for adsense type sites. Visit google info section for specifics or better yet speak with your attorney.
