No content strategy = your content will probably fail.

If you know anything about marketing youre probably aware of the need for a strategy for basically every marketing task you undertake.

Its there for a reason and particularly for content marketing it is absolutely essential

Strategies are important for a number of reasons they define your KPIs allowing you to identify what numbers are important to you and also help to define a plan for your editorial and manage this on an ongoing basis.

What can you include in your strategy?

There is no hard and fast rule but you might want to include the following:

- Objectives
- Goals - for your content marketing including revenue growth targets
- Strategy
- Time - to get message across (based on each media)
- Brand story - including key messages
- Calls to action
- Communication channel plan including which communication channels you are going to use to create the conversation
- Metrics including the actual measurement of the strategies
- ie. increase website traffic to @@% over one year
- ie. convert ##% of web users
- Ie. Add to the pipeline ## new leads
- ie. Generate revenue of $##

Your content strategy doesnt have to be book length, one page will do usually however it will give you so much clarity.

Anyone using this format or something else please feel free to share your tips and experiences.

all of the above is great to add into your content strategy

your one page strategy just needs a little modification

from our testing we are finding longer is better than shorter

for one particular reason, we are finding that user interactions on pages are being monitored and the longer someone is on your pages we have seen higher rankings as a result from our testing

this was not the case before AI(RankBrain) good SEO ruled and backlinks

now Google has capabilities to monitor user interactions on the fly and the initial testing is trending towards devaluing backlinks as the primary factor for rankings

so keep your content on the long side, informative and captivating such that people want to share and you will see higher rankings is what our test are showing

      Thanks for the feedback.

The comment about longer being better is really interesting, I was reading posts on here last week about this and it was really interesting.

Traditionally blog posts and articles are usually set by clients at 500 words and that turns the whole idea on its head. I usually have over 1000 words for my own blogs, so hopefully the rest of the online world catches up with this too.

      I appreciate your comments

as with any trend, the rest of the world is always catching up

        happens in every industry

the most obvious industry stock market

the smart investors buy low when everyone is afraid to do anything and sell high when all the talking heads start recommending it's time to buy and we all know when that stock crashes they all exit and sell low

what I find about the masses is that most are just repeating what some gurus have made public after some testing or correlations, but in general the masses have not done the testing for themselves

my recommendation I say to anyone test it yourself and look at the results in the SERPs as well as how long is the most shared content that is working

You will find that most of the content is 1000 words and better

I just read a piece of content that gave more information out in a post than 99% of the WSO's on here for free

it is all about relevancy these days and if you need to make a point generally it is more than 500 words for a post

Yep, I realise this and I am curious to find out more about whats next and around the corner.

I like your stock market example - I just had a situation last week where I took a risk and bought my first piece of artwork, it was scary, it was a bit of cash but I knew I wanted it and it would sell so I jumped in and got it. I got a phone call two days ago only about 4 days after buying it from the gallery saying that now the piece has sold they had an enquiry for it and someone offering an extra 25% on what I bought it for. A good lesson for me.

I am testing this out and I guess for a long time I had fixated on the length of a great blog to be 500 words, this was just what I had been working from for a while. I should have been testing it, stupidly I just ran with it blindly.

I just wrote a medically-based blog yesterday for example and there is no way i could have got the main points across in 500 words, not a chance, so they theory of 500 words is definately out the window.

          Thanks for your comment.

    Up to a point.

A piece of great content in isolation, shared widely can be massively influential, without being part of a stragety.

The importance of on page content is undervalued in exchange for backlinks, social shares etc. Both are equally important!
