All-In-One Threads:

All-In-One threads is something I'm starting here where we as a group try to list damn near everything known about the subject of the thread. When you see an All-In-One thread feel free to speak up. It can be a 'secret', just a technique you happen to use or even something you haven't used, just heard about - whatever. Feel free to join in.

Please do not use the term All-In-One anywhere on this board. It will be saved for these threads specifically so at some point all one will have to do is search for the term "All-In-One" and all these threads will be easily found. At some point these will become some of the most sought after threads on the forum so it might be a good idea to participate if you have something to say people are going to really like.

If you have a great idea for an All-In-One thread please send me a PM and let me know about it.

Thank you..

I've had a lot of requests for this one. Free software you can't live without. Or, just great free software :-)

List what you know about..

Thanks!

Allen

              I like that one too!

One of my absolute favourites is Adsen Image Grab. Type in the url of the web page you might want to capture images, say a Google Image search, and you can download the images to a chosen place like "My Pictures".

You have to observe copyright laws though.

I've used it when promoting people's products, so I've used their images to promote them, for example to make a banner. Or I've used free images for certain niches.

I've got a site that has free to use web based tools that are useful for IMers.

There are 5 tools so far, and more on their way. I'm a bit of a coding geek, and decided to try and create as many useful tools that anyone, no matter what their computer system is, can make use of.

The GUI is very basic, but that's not really my strong point.

              The live tools are:

GENNIT - this takes in an article that contains spin syntax and generates up to 1000 unique version, which are zipped up and downloaded to the user's computer.

SHUFFLEIT and FEEDIT which are used in RSS Feed creation

BOOSTIT, which is used to create tons of backlinks (mostly temporary) to give your site a boost with the search engines.

And PINGIT, which notifies the search engines that your site or RSS Feed exists.

Yes, I know, some spam tools, but I could not help myself, I could see I could write them and did, oops

I'm aiming to go to the University of Edinburgh at the end of next year (not applied, as yet), to do an MSc in Artificial Intelligence. I finished a BSc last year in the same subject at Sussex. I'm hoping to have as my project a really advanced form of the spinning software. It will be a LOT more than just swapping out synonyms oo, I can just feel the hate from the SEO pure

If anyone has any ideas for tools that would be useful, please let me know, then I'll write them.

Site is in my signature... please excuse the basic and cartoonish look

In my experience Gimp is more convenient than Photoshop for every day editing. The reason being that Adobe wants you to buy the whole suite so they make it hard to open PNGs in Photoshop so you will have to buy Fireworks. Gimp opens pretty much everything.

For Vector editing try Inkscape instead of Adobe Illustrator. It works in a format called .svg instead of .eps

There is a plugin that is supposed to allow you to import Adobe files to Inkscape but I couldn't get it to work. $5 on Fiverr is more affordable and convenient to get anything converted to an infinitely scalable SVG. Once you've scaled it to whatever size you want then you can convert it to a raster file such as .png for manipulation in other programs and printing.

I learned both of these programs after spending 20 minutes watching tutorials on Youtube.

In Gimp I mainly just resize, crop and color correct. When you first install it you don't need all the windows that pop up. Just the main file window and the tool box.

To resize an image go to "image" and "scale image."

This program was designed by a phd with some ideosyncratic tendencies.

Like starting you off with the brush tool so you accidentally paint all over your image. (Just go to edit and undo) I usually switch to the move tool first: a little cross with arrows.

And then you try to move a layer and the layer underneath moves instead. (in the tool box click "move active layer")

Or you do the paint bucket and only part of the intended selection is affected. (in the tool box click "fill whole selection"

Just a few pointers to prevent any unnecessary frustrations on your Gimp honeymoon.

The best logo program for a clean professional look is GreenBox Logomaker. It's not free ($29) unless you grab the old version on bit torrent. (not recommended)

Agreed John. Great programs all of them. Camstudio is kinf od funny though in that it really does get a little tricky on the install (trying to install all kinds of extra stuff on your system), probably confuses a lot of people and deters them away from it.

xheader.com - Really easy free software to create headers. From Paul Smithson - XSitePro creator but you can create headers for Wordpress with it or anything really. Comes with 50 built in headers and you can download 500 more if you register for free. I find it a lot easier and quicker to use than Photoshop. You can use your own photos if you want in the headers which you save as JPG's.

Timeleft - A time management application from TimeLeft - Countdown, reminder, clock, alarm clock, tray clock, stopwatch, timer, sticker, auction watch and time synchronization utility. . I use it for the timer which I set to one hour and then record what work I've done. During a normal day I get the usual interruptions - phone, children, someone at the door or whatever - so I just pause the timer and restart afterwards so only work is timed. Sounds simple but it's been invaluable to productivity.

I can't resize the workspace, so I have to constantly scroll or constantly preview my work before I get my designs right. Is there a solution to this? Lots of good stuff already mentioned...

    Ashampoo - cd/dvd burning software
zipGenious - unzipper - I recommend this instead of "winzip" which is NOT free.
Trellian Web Page - WYSIWYG html editor
Paint - okay not really "free" in the truest sense of the word but great for making quick text link graphics.
Theophilos - excellent bible software - has great search features
Note Tab Light - I like the second window feature

Okay that's about all I can think of - not that I'm a fan of free software or anything ;-)

The program I use the most is a FireFox plugin called FireFTP. You launch it from your Tools menu. It is probably one of the nest FTP programs out there. It is always ready to go, no need to launch another program when you need to FTP.

Second to that is TextWrangler. This is a Mac text editor and is very powerful. It has a built in FTP program. I can open a file right from the server, edit it and save it right bak to the server.

Winmerge is great for comparing text files.
cygwin is good to make windows behave a BIT like linux/unix so you can better test some things, etc... ALSO, unix, and cygwin, have builtin features windows may never have.

Ack! People who are recommending NVU should move up to its (reported) successor: KompoZer !
Note that KompoZer has built-in "ftp" -- so you can set up the link to where a given html page lives and it will upload it for you.

(The biggest objections I have to KompoZer is that it doesn't edit .php files, and refuses to edit a page that has iframes in it. Sigh.)

And Steve, yah, cygwin is like the FIRST thing I install on any new Windows machine I buy. A bit too geeky for this crowd, though, I think. LOL.

Notepad++ -Notepad for programmers. Other notepad editors have been listed here, but this one's my favorite.

CutePDF -Installs as a printer driver, select instead of your physical printer and anything you can print is turned into a PDF, couldn't be easier.

WinRAR is my preferred zip/unzip program. Theoretically it's shareware/free trial, but there are no nag screens, no limited functionality, etc, ever.

MailWasher Free Version -Delete spam off server before downloading... Free version only allows you to use 1 POP account. Learning curve is fairly high I suppose; I've been using the pro version for years, have all my filters perfected, and it does a great job for me.

AutoHotkey -Hot Key / Macro Record / Shortcut program. There's no front-end user interface, just lots of tips and examples on how to create your own, and a busy forum of people sharing their macros. It does a lot, but not the easiest to learn.

    4. FTP995

    5. Notepad ( great for jotting ideas down when browsing around online )

    6. Add Ons For FireFox ( I can't do without 'Download Status Bar', ' FoxyTunes ', and 'FireShot' )

    7. WinZip ( yes, I know this one is shareware/free trial, but I love it and have used it for years now! )

    8. WordPress and Free WordPress Themes

Those are my all time "cannot live without" free tools. Hope you find this list useful

WebCEO - complete search engine optimization tool, available for free. Option for small business and large business also available. The most complete SEO tool in my opinion. Includes keywords analysis, site rank checker, directory submission tool, etc. etc.

Google Chrome - The fastest browser in the Planet. I've used more than 5 browsers already and nothing comes close to chrome when it comes to speed.

Firefox - for browser automation put an add-in Imacros and you can automatically do what takes you hours to perform. Though you'll have to learn some scripting.

bubbl.us - fantastic for mind maps. After trying it out for a few hours I got hooked. Now I'm creating mind maps for the most important plans I have in mind. It keeps my mind focused.

Action Outline - outline software to organize your research & key bits of info in a tree outline format, with topics in the left window and details in the right window.

Topics are "drag-able" "nest-able." Very user friendly, very flexible.

Opens with two windows: outline description in the left pane and whatever details you want for that description in the right pane.

Besides flexible and user friendly - its strong points are these:

      1) you can manage all actions from the key board;

      2) hot keys for inserting date/time stamps (in any format your want);

      3) hot key for inserting links to files on your hard drive or the internet;

      4) topics in the left pane can be reorganized by moving them up, down, in,
      or out with keystrokes (no need to be constantly reaching for the mouse);

      5) website links in the right pane are hot and will open in your browser;

      6) copy an image from a document and paste it into the right pane
      (charts, graphs, designs, illustrations);

      7) can nest topics at least 7 deep (more gets unruly);

      8) SEARCHABLE!

      9) topic contents can be highlighted, formated, and printed;

      10) create unlimited outlines (I've got about 20 business & personal outlines)

The Lite version is free. I used it for awhile and then bought the full version. I use it to track all of my business research and personal topics of interest.

I use quite a bit of the software already mentioned but I also can't live without:

NoScript - Firefox plugin that blocks website scripts to prevent malware. You can optionally allow any script you chose. Can be annoying at times but I think it's worth the protection.

Malwarebytes - This will scan your drives thoroughly and remove viruses, rootkits, etc. It finds quite a bit more than other such programs that I've tried.

Yankee Clipper - A clipboard extender that stores the last 100 clipboard entries. It features a scroll area to allow viewing of each entry completely.

Fineprint - Printer software that let's you print up to 8 pages on a single sheet of paper, plus you can make booklets, etc.. The free version places an ad at the bottom of the paper.

Synchback - Fantastic back up program for archiving to external media. Very fast and accurate. Never had it fail.

You can also increase sales, tweak conversions, and of course, improve customer satisfaction x10.

Most of these have been mentioned already but there are some new ones -

Open Office - for a writer the most important tool of all - exports directly to PDF with clickable links

PageFour - Another great program for writers to prepare content in sections

Alleycode HTML Editor - my favourite tool for building HTML pages

Wordpress - A content management system anyone can understand and use

    Firefox and Thunderbird

    FileZilla FTP Program

Skype IM and free speech calls to the whole world

    AUDIO AND VIDEO

foobar2000 - the best audio player

VLC media player - plays anything you can throw at it

MediaJoin - Combine audio and video files into one file

Jing - Create short videos and take screenshots

Audacity - I use this all the time, not just for creating marketing audios, but also for digitizing my huge collection of music on stone age tapes, vinyl records and even 78rpm records (trendy I am not).

    GRAPHICS (Not my strong point!)

Paint.NET - Graphics creation and editing program which even I can (just about) understand

Irfanview - Combine pictures and graphics into one file

XHeader - Create simple page headers - Easy to Use

    UTILITIES

    Spybot Search and Destroy

    CCleaner

    Avast Antivirus

FilZip - Zips and unzips not just zip files but .rar files and a lot more

It was THEM! The developers and customer service team members from Wordpress and the parent company, Automatik. I couldn't help but make an ass of myself, asking for pictures, and drilling them about stuff, LOL.

I'm not sure if these have been mentioned yet:

Aptana studio: a free open-source FTP client, WYSIWYG and code editor comparable to ColdFusion studio

Blender: Open-source video editing and 3-d modeling software

Pinnacle: They offer a free limited version of their video editing software (I liked it so much that I bought one of their $15 extension packs, but it functions completely free I believe)

Flash editor: There may be an open-source flash editor/creator at osflash.org

Evernote: An AWESOME notes program by apple that's accessible via desktop application that saves your note database locally or by logging in at evernote.com. I have almost 1000 notes in my database. The program is often updated as well. Also, it is capable of really nice screen shots and searching text within images

Mint.com and Wasabe.com: Online-based applications for budget and bank account monitoring (comparable to Quicken)

CutePDF Writer: A print driver that allows you to print web pages directly to PDF -- I have used this many times for my swipe file

PortableApps: An application that allows you to run programs from a USB drive (I run firefox, my password manager, and thunderbird from my drive when I do work at other computers like at my school)

Great post. I practically live off open-source software and applications, including those mentioned above in addition to FileZilla, Open Office, Thunderbird, Firefox/Safari/Chrome, Audacity, Tweetdeck, and many others. Thanks.

It has been seven months since I had my computer reformatted after it kept on crashing. The silver lining is that I had a fresh start when downloading "free softwares". On top of my list are:

Google Earth *- Consumes 69 MB on disk space, I could visualize any place I find interesting.

Yahoo Messenger and Skype -36.5MB and 47MB, respectively, I could send message and calls to my contacts.

uTorrent - 315 Kb file size, I could download movies.

vDownloader -11.8 MB file size, I could download you tube videos in my PSP.

iTunes - 121 MB file size, I could sync apps to my iPhone and iPad.

Chikka - 5.43 MB file size, I could send messages from my pc to other people's cp.

The only one I use that I did not see on the first page-I look at most recent to the earliest but only looked at first page to like march '10 was a time management and project compiler.

ActionMethod.com It is free for the first 50 projects.

I use it to store my purchased software and PLR articles etc. Along with download links, purchase price, date, from who. key codes or activation codes etc. And I can catagorize the purchases by what subject or domain I was using it for. comes in really handy.

I really like the part where the program lets me know that I am getting close to a resubscribe time or something with a membership site, I keep track of those there too. otherwise I would forget and just keep on going and paying and forgetting....

I really wish i could find the spell checker on these input forms...

One of my most valued 'efficiency' tools, "Cool Timer". It's a very simple, easy, and effective timer. I set it for 60 mins. whenever I sit down at my PC. That helps me in focusing on what I'm working on, but interrupts me in an hour, insuring I take a break, move on to something else, or whatever.

In fact, many days I set the timer for 30-60 mins., set about a particular task, to-do, etc., then move on to the next one once the alarm goes off. Those days end up super-productive, with a lot of things getting done.

Ok, here's my list. Most of these we use in our office...

    Communication
Skype - great for communicating with colleagues and partners
Jajah - allows you to make cheap landline calls. Calls are up to 98% cheaper than telco charges
Truphone - enables cheap mobile calls between friends
Sim4Travel - if you travel a lot and want to use your mobile phone while overseas
DimDim - recommended for web conference calls, where you can share your desktop, slides and videos
Google Calendar - the best application for noting and sharing appointments with your team

    Productivity
Google Docs - easy way of uploading and sharing documents for collaboration
Facebook Groups - create a private group on Facebook that only certain friends can see or communicate through
OpenOffice - a free alternative to Microsoft Office, which will probably still meet all of your needs
FreeMind - an excellent mind mapping tool, for capturing all of your thoughts on a subject or issue within one page
AVG Free - as the name suggests, a free anti-virus solution. It is as good as most commercial products
Dropbox - outstanding for backing up your files
KeePass Password Safe - ideal for managing your passwords
CutePDF - use to create PDF documents, rather than spend hundreds of dollars on Adobe software
Photoshop Express - if you are a light user of photo editing software use the free online Photoshop solution. It has all the most used features in an easy to use interface
PayPal - if you need to take payments online PayPal is now the most cost effective solution and much easier to get approval during tough times, when the banks are closing their doors to new merchants.
Audacity - great for free audio editing
Jumpcut - very handy for free online video editing
Fences - great way of making a busy desktop look tidier

    Website Specific
Wordpress - a free and powerful blogging solution
SubHub Lite - an advanced, hassle-free site building solution
Google Alerts - a free way of monitoring what people are saying about you, your company and your competitors on the internet
Google Analytics - an excellent free webs stats package, which will enable you to track all of the visitor activity on your website
FileZilla - a free FTP solution which enables you to easily manage the files on your web server

    Managing Your Customers
Zoho - very useful for managing your customer information

I'll add more as i think of them

With the way technology changes... It is time to update these lists, as this posted started WAYYY back in 2009.

It would have been nice if everyone posted, not just what they like, but why, and what does it do?

Am surprised no one's mentioned Total Commander (Total Commander - home). This is a program based on the original Norton Commander (yep, from the 80's) and still retains its look and feel. It's an all-in-one file manager, viewer, FTP, unpacker/packer, file splitter/joiner, renamer + around 150+ other functions all of which share a common interface, which means it's dead easy to use. It's intuitive and fast - and you can use keyboard as well as mouse commands. As a result you can perform random file operations faster than ANYTHING available. It's simply an awesome bit of software and - it's freeware/shareware - meaning: it encourages you to pay for it, but it runs 100% fully operational without unneccesary nags. I've purchased it three times over the years - just because I love it. And you will too I think!

    Hi
As a newbie I'm bewildered by the range of knowledge and thrilled by the share.
    Huge thanks to all contributors.
    Personal faves :
Avast ( much better than AVG2011, runs quietly in background)
    Malwarebytes
    7-Zip ( really intuitive)
    Google Chrome (rapid & simple)

.........and the best yet : yes, Warrior forum. God bless you all. :*)

Thanks for taking the time everyone and presenting this very useful stuff.

I have another one for the list, it's not for everyone but for those who use and know how cumbersome and time consuming it can be using the s3 amazon interface, here's a handy little free Firefox plugin

    Amazon S3 Organizer(S3Fox)

Also the CloudBerry Amazon S3 Explorer

    Thanks

    CCleaner (of course)
Plus AdwareAlert for instantly removing parasites.
    Norton (as well obviously)

Used to also use Glary utilities but had a system tool virus attack once from that, so the above 3 are the best, keeps my pc running super fast at all times!
